The Cousins

🥀Dee🥀

The final bell of the day came and (name) and I began to pack our things to head home. We had a tutoring session at my place, but I'm not sure I'm really up for it today. (Name) been quiet all day; not once have I heard a single word utter out from her. Along with the fact that she's had this exhausted, pissy face too. I was honestly worried if what happened yesterday might've caused this. Should I apologize?

As we both walk down the halls, I took a deep breath in and decided to get it over with, "(name)..I would like to apologize."

Her eyes that were once glaring at the floor shifted to me, now softer but slightly surprised. "Apologize for what?" I saw the bags under eyes had gotten worse, and it made me worried if she stopped eating again.

"Uh- well, for yesterday." Shit, I'm getting nervous. "I wasn't considerate of you and how you would feel inside a cramped space and um..ah..it was wrong for me to kiss you with con--"

"You could've just said the first part and then say sorry," she cuts me off. "It's not that deep, it's fine."

We left the conversation at that and met with Heavy by the front doors. (Name) the first one to get out but had shut the doors suddenly.

"(Name)?" My brother looked concerned.

"Is there another way out of the school? Preferably, from the back?"

"No? Unless you want to jump the high fence around the school yard. What's wrong?"

(Name) sighed, dreading the following words to come out, "there's no way around it so...my cousins are out there.."

Her cousins? The school doors had windows on them so I decided to take a peek through them. Sure enough, there was a small group; three kids around me and (name)'s age, waiting outside. Something told me that whoever these cousins were, she definitely didn't want to be around them.

"So, what now?" I turned back to her, "do you want to just wait until they go away?"

She shook her head, "you guys were going to meet them anyway. Just...whatever you do, don't encourage or give them any satisfaction. Trust me."

Heavy and I gave each other a confused glance but nodded, nonetheless. She was the first to step out of the school building and my brother and I followed after. The trio ahead was made up of two boys and a girl. The tallest boy had brown hair, combed back with gel keeping it in place and his shin was lightly tanned. The girl next to him looked his twin, except for her being a fake blonde. I could see her natural roots sprouting out the scalp. And lastly, the younger looking boy had more of a curly texture to his hair and it was a dark shade of auburn red. Also, he was paler than the other two with him. As we got closer, the girl turned her head and spotted us.

"There she is~! " She grinned, with the most fake-ass voice. "(Name), you meanie. You forgot to tell us where your school was, so we could've pick you up."

(Name) only glared at her as she responded with, "I don't recall ever asking you guys to pick me up, Phoebe. You followed me to school, didn't you?"

"Hey," Phoebe's twin cut in, "we're just looking out for you, cuz' . You don't know what dangers there are in a new country." He smirked mockingly as his two companions chuckled.

"Oh, cut the crap, Jarred!" (Name) sneered, "I'm not a baby! I've lived here long enough to know my way back home from school. Plus, I'm not going anywhere with you. I have a tutoring lesson."

"Oh, yeah? With who?" The red head raised a brow, and that's when Heavy and I stepped in front of (name).

"Us." We said in unison, both annoyed at how they blatantly ignored us standing right there with them.

The three teens gawked at us. Probably not by intimidation, but just utter shock. The boy, Jarred, shook his head and brought back his stupid smirk. He eyed my brother up and down, then did the same to me but more in thought. A scoff escaped from him and he shook his head again with a laugh.

"What?" I asked through my gritted teeth. Just everything about this kid made me want to punch him.

Jarred got close and patted my shoulder, leaning into my ear to say, "those better be some good tutoring lessons you're giving her~ And, by the way.... she's not clean. Sorry, man."

He backed away and left with the other two cousins, leaving me confused. "Not clean" ? Did he mean-?

"Dee.." I turn my head back to (name) and see her hand on my shoulder. Her grip was soft but strained, and her head was hanging downward. ".. don't listen to him. He's just an asshole."

$~$~$~$

The three of us walked to our home, to which our parents were happy to see their favorite guest. (Name), as always, didn't show her lack of happiness and graciously greeted mom and dad. For her sake, Heavy and I pretended like nothing happened earlier and went up to my room for our study session.

"Aw, shit! I forgot," Heavy suddenly facepalmed, seemingly dramatic, "I lent that videogame to Curly for a few days. I'll be right back with it, see ya-!" And with that, he bolts out the room. What the hell was that about?

🌸You🌸

Heavy, you conniving little piece of shit, I'm going to KILL YOU! I internally screamed. My body began to shake with overwhelming anxiety. I was stuck alone with the boy I made out with yesterday and I'm supposed to be chilled until my best friend comes back?! Is he really going to come back?! UUUGHH! MY GUY, YOU ARE SO DEAD!

"Okay...odd?" Dee confusingly raised a brow while staring at his door. "Let's get this homework done, shall we?"

"Y-yeah, let's." I agreed, taking out my books and pens.

Dee and I worked on silence for a while until, every-now-and-then, I asked for help. Whenever we got close, my heart raced, and not in a good way. In fact, as much as I wanted to be with this blonde alt-boy, I wanted to get away from him. Far away. But again, I was having trouble getting used to my Russian literature.

"Eh, Dee?" I raised my hand slightly and I saw him sigh, closing the book in his hands.

"Again?"

"Hey! You're my paid tutor!"

He rolled his eyes and crawled over to me, since we were on the floor, and looked at my text book. I explained to him about my problem with the different spellings and meanings, and he gave me this boring look.

"How did you learn English, one the most complicated forms of language, and not learn something simple as Russian cognates?"

"I've been here for a little over a month and you expect I can learn a new language, just like THAT?" I retorted, snapping my finger at the end.

"Actually, yes, I do! Considering that you told me that you're DAD was Russian, himself. How come he never taught you and your brothers?"

"Uhm, probably because we never thought we'd move here? We didn't grow up in a Russian neighborhood either so, I don't know." Then, our argument became a personal conversation.

"..why did your family come here?" Dee asked nervously.

"Some things went down back home. I'll spare you the details but, my dad thought it would be better for me and my brother, Joseph."

"Did those things happen to do with those cousins of yours?"

"Kinda yeah. They're only here for the holidays and my birthday so, I'll be glad once they're gone..." But to ensure that I wouldn't say too much, I returned to my dilemma, "anyway, would you please help me with this?"

Dee sighed again, "yeah, yeah, Don't start whining, Evangeline."

"Hmph, dick."

"Whatever."
