Life Changes

🌸You🌸

My family and I had just landed in Russia and are currently making our way out of the airport. Not before we find our car, that is.

"[Excuse me,]" my dad approached the welcoming counter, speaking Russian. "[I had my car flown here and was hoping you could help me find it?]"

"[Oh, of course.]" The lady assistant nodded, "[Can I have your name and license plate?]"

"[[Viktor Mikhailov and the number is *******]]"

She types through a few things on her computer and gives dad a smile. "[[Your vehicle is at the reserved section of the parking lot.]]"

"[[Ah, thank you. Have a nice day.]]" Dad tips his hat to her and turns to face us, speaking English this time. "Come on, let's go."

We find our car and hop inside. The tank wasn't very full so, we had to make a quick gas stop. After that, we were finally....home. I gazed up at new house we'll be living in and a wave of nausea washed over me. I didn't like change very much, especially life changes. I hesitantly step out of the car and my knees began to buckle. I couldn't tell if it was the nervousness or the fresh, cold breeze brushing over my skin.

My eldest brother [Lev] was the first to walk inside the two story house, my other brother [Joseph] and I followed. As expected, the insides were empty and dusty. A few cob webs here and there and dust bunnies scattered around. My brothers and I ignored this as we set off to pick out our rooms. During the car ride, we pulled straws on first dibs. Joseph won 1st, Lev won 2nd, and I got last. Though I wasn't too worried about them picking the "biggest" bedroom.

"I call this one!" Joseph throws his fist up in the air. He chose the basement, which did have the space of a normal bedroom, just slightly more spacious.

"Big enough for your instruments, I'm guessing?" I crossed my arms smirking.

"Well, duh! Imma go grab my shit, excuse me." He leaves the basement and Lev and I continued the search for our rooms.

We both make our way to the second floor and my brother opens his first door. The room was pretty open. It had its own bathroom and walk-in closet. And there was this nice, big window on the wall with a perfect view of the street and beyond.

"Yeah, I like this one." He shrugged to himself.

"So~," I then bat my eyes playfully, "the rest are free gain?"

Levi rolls his eyes and pats my head, "go for it, sis."

I leave the room and looked through the last three doors. Two of them were a little bigger and one was about the same size as Lev's room. I took one of the big rooms, assuming that mom and dad would take the other, and the last one would be dad's study. Now that my mind was made up, I went back down stairs to grab my things from the truck.

It took all day, but we managed to clean and set up everything. All that was left was to unpack our clothes and shit. I'll do it tomorrow. I flopped onto my bed and rotate my eyes to stare outside bedroom window. It was passed sunset. The warm colors of the sun blended with the dark, night sky, stars more clearer to see. It is pretty. I thought to myself. As I'm about to fall asleep, there's a knock at my door.

There, was Joseph. Leaning on the doorframe with the same look of exhaustion. "Hey, Dad's back with take-out. Come on."

I groan getting up, "alright, I'm comin'."

We walk down to the dinner table and our family was now fully seated. As tired as I was, that feeling went away when I had whiff of the unfamiliar, but enchanting smell of food. Dad began to pull the packaged food out of the paper bag and set them on the table. In front of each of us were large dinner plates and side bowls, along with the utensils.

The food was now being passed around the table. First, was some pasta Dad called Beef Stroganoff. Second, Salad Olivier, which was a bunch of chopped up veggies with mayonnaise. And lastly, a red soup and smelled sour, but savory. It was called Solyanka. Little did I know, it was gonna be spicy. After that, mom passed out the drinks for us and we began to dig in.

"Wow! This is really good, love!" Mom complimented with a full mouth.

"I know," Dad laughed, "these were my favorite dishes growing up. I'm glad you like them."

My siblings and continued to silently eat, agreeing with mom. We've never tried anything like this back home, it was delicious. As we ate, my mother calls for my attention.

"(Name), tomorrow, you and your father will be going out to enroll you in a new school."

I nearly spat my drink, "already?! But we just got here and I hardly know any Russian! I'll get fall behind immediately!"

She nodded understandably, "I know, and that'll be taken care of. You, your brothers and I will be going to afternoon classes to learn."

"And don't worry about falling behind on homework, sweetie," Dad piped in. "I'll be helping you as much as I can."

Knowing that there's no point in arguing, I just sighed. "Fine."

After dinner, we all got changed and prepared ourselves for bed. We still had some work to do in the morning. I tucked myself into the cold covers, shivering at their touch. As I get myself into a comfortable sleeping position, I closed my eyes and let the darkness consume me.
