Chapter 17 - An Unexpected, Unknown Problem

Wheeeee time for sick lil bean moments while the robo-fren panics and Gerald shenanigans :3

—————————————————————————————————————

[Sabre's POV]

I slowly wake up, feeling like I just got off some seriously crappy fair ride from those storybooks.

I don't even want to open my eyes, I just want to go back to being unconscious so I don't feel this awful ache all over my body. I eventually convince myself to try and at least sit up, forcing my eyelids to open. I very soon regret that, as when I do open my eyes it just looks as if the room is spinning. I quickly shut my eyes again and bury my face in my pillow.

I try to just let this all pass, but it won't go away. My head is pounding, and everything just feels sore. I slightly open one eye and try to reach for the water bottle on the end table next to the bed, as my throat feels dry and scratchy, but it feels like it's miles away and I quickly give up. I close my eye again and try to make the pain go away.

I suddenly start coughing, as I always do whenever I'm sick. Not even a second later I hear Orange rushing up the stairs, his loud clanking footsteps not really helping with the headache. I hear Orange get to my room, and speed over to me.

"Sabre, are you okay?! What's wrong?!" Orange asks, clearly panicking. I flinch at the noise.

I just groan, really not feeling like talking. I feel Orange lift the covers off me slightly, and I open my eyes halfway. Orange looks at me for a minute, his eyes darting from side to side as he takes a worried expression. I think he's scanning me...?

"Jeez, your systems are going haywire!" Orange says. "Wh- Are you feeling okay?!"

Orange carefully picks me up and lifts me off the bed, pretty much cradling me. I manage to focus myself so I can talk to him.

"I-I think I got sick..." I say, almost whispering, my voice sounding hoarse.

"Sick?! How?!" Orange exclaims, starting to walk downstairs. I wish he'd quiet down a little...

"I dunno..." I mumble.

Orange gets me over to the couch once we get downstairs and sets me on it. He's frantically asking questions, trying to figure out what's wrong, but it's too loud and it's making my head hurt worse. Orange soon notices.

"I'm sorry, am I being too loud?" Orange asks, lowering his voice. "What's wrong?"

"Head hurts..." I say, trying to clear my dizzy vision.

"Sorry, buddy. I'll be quieter." Orange says. "Uhh... Do you want some food? You woke up late, and you usually have something by now..."

"I can try." I say.

Orange walks off to the storage room, and brings back an apple and two small melon slices. He hands them to me, and notices I'm shivering.

"Why are you shaking? Are you cold?" Orange asks, and I nod. "Okay, be right back, I'm grabbing one of your blankets."

Orange quickly but quietly heads upstairs, and I eat the fruits he gave me. I notice Gerald walking up to where I am, and he hops up on the couch.

"Hi, Gerald." I smile.

Gerald seems to ignore me and hops up onto the arm of the couch next to me. Confused, I stare at him.

"What are you d- *cough* doing?" I ask the little mechanical pig next to me, who's now on top of the head of the couch. Suddenly, I feel a wave of nausea over me.

Orange then comes back downstairs, holding the fluffier white blanket. He sees Gerald and freaks out a little bit.

"Gerald, no! Don't do that! He's-" Orange says, but... too late.

Gerald jumps onto me from the couch, landing right on my stomach. He probably thinks he's doing the prank he always pulls with zero consequences, but quickly regrets his decision as I lurch forward.

—————————————————————————————————————

[Orange Steve's POV]

Gosh dang it Gerald.

I'm hugging Sabre as he's curled up, shaking inside the blanket, kind of looking like what humans called a 'burrito'. Gerald is pouting in the corner of the room after I had cleaned him and everything else up. He looks at me, and I look back at him.

"Gerald, don't give me that. That was your fault, you jumped on him." I say, and Gerald turns back to the corner.

What in the heck even was that? Does Sabre have some kind of... defense mechanism? Or did it happen because he's sick? I'll have to ask him about it later when he's feeling a little better. Right now... I have no idea what to do or what's wrong with him.

Wait, is Sabre gonna die?! No, no, it can't be that bad. Calm down. Maybe he just got too cold during the night, or something else. Maybe the Leader would know how to help...? Yeah, maybe. I'll go to the village later and ask. For now, I'm just going to make sure my little buddy will be as comfy and safe as possible until he gets better.

I look to check on him, and he's... sleeping? What? He never sleeps this early, especially after waking up! Uhh... maybe him being sick is messing with his energy? Okay, scratch that, I'm getting help from the Leader now. Wait, the lightning will probably wake Sabre up... shoot. Gotta be sneaky.

I get up, still carrying Sabre, and start to go upstairs so I can put him in his bed. It's probably comfier than being on the couch. I notice Gerald following me as I go up. We get to Sabre's room, and I'm about to set him down when he wakes up and looks at me.

"Whaddaya doin...?" Sabre mumbles, as I put him in his bed.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up. I was just thinking you'd be comfier here than on the couch." I say, putting his other blanket over him. "I'm gonna go ask the Leader if he can help, okay? It's gonna be loud for a second when I go."

"M'kay..." Sabre says as he shifts further down into the blankets, soon seeming to fall asleep again.

"Gerald, watch him." I whisper, and Gerald trots over to the bedside and sits there.

I walk away downstairs quietly, and head outside. Going over to the orange portal, I remotely set co-ordinates to where I want tog o and run through, hoping the lightning doesn't cause Sabre too much discomfort.

Man, I hope this isn't serious.

—————————————————————————————————————

[Rainbow Red's POV] (Hehe, crazy skittle's POV while Orange panics to the Leader)

Okay, he left. I can go to the house now.

This actually worked a little bit better than I thought it would. Then again, I wasn't expecting Sabre to take all three of the painted apples at once. Orange Steve is stupid enough to not get rid of the harmful fruits that grow in the forest, so I used them to my advantage by painting the purple over with red-colored sugar paint. Completely unnoticeable, aside from being a little darker, which worked more in my favor as they caught the human's interest.

Working my way over from the opposite side of this place from the house is proving a bit troublesome, thanks to the vines growing around the forest. My exposed wiring keeps catching on them. I can't just run out into the open, I would risk Sabre seeing me and knowing of my presence. That would defeat the purpose of this entire plan.

I finally get over to the house, walking to the side and I see a nearby tree I can use to reach the balcony and sneak in. I climb it as quietly as I can, although it's becoming hard to do so as the tips of my fingers keep stabbing into the wood. Sometimes I even lose my grip and create claw marks in the tree's trunk as I slip, but then catch myself.

Eventually I'm able to grab onto a tree limb and hoist myself up, the branch leading a little below the balcony like a bridge. I chuckle to myself as I take the path given to me, and I grab onto the balcony and pull myself up to reach the room.

What the- what's a pig doing here?

There's a mechanical pig standing there in the doorway of the balcony, Sabre sleeping in a bed behind it. I confusedly stare at it, slightly hanging off the edge of the balcony as I was pulling myself up when I saw it. It stares right back, almost looking a little ticked off.

Suddenly it barrels towards me and headbutts me in the face through the fence, myself having been perfectly aligned for it to do so. I fall from where I was hanging in shock, and land on my back in the grass with a 'thud'. I angrily get up, climbing up the tree again, and when I get to where I was I see the pig sitting near Sabre on the bed, now definitely looking angry.

I decide this isn't worth breaking myself over and leave the tree to go back to the shadows, already thinking of ways to alter my plan. I'm reviewing what's already happened in my head as I find a good space to hide in case Orange Steve comes back soon.

Okay, so, the first part of my plan worked; Sabre is incapacitated and weakened. Now I just need to find a way to take him without alerting Orange Steve while doing so, and in a way that's not dangerous. Easier said than done, as what's just been demonstrated...

I need to take Sabre with me. He's the prophesied human, the one supposed to help the Third Hero once he's created. If I'm going to be the Hero, just as I was meant to, Sabre needs to be working alongside me, not Orange Steve! It only makes sense that even though I'm not the Hero just yet, the human should still be on my side.

I then have the idea to go in through the door. It's crude and seems stupid, but the pig can't possibly be there if it was just sitting with Sabre, right? I sneak back over to the house and carefully open the door, so Sabre doesn't hear me.

To my surprise, the pig is standing there. It now headbutts my knees, making me fall backwards. I fall to the ground and the door shuts before I even know what happened. What- It's a pig. How did it even reach the doorknob?!

I try many other places of entry. Each window, trying the door again, trying the balcony again, trying more windows, but each and every time the pig is there and keeps me from getting inside. It even dropped a flowerpot on my head before I even got to the balcony!

Eventually I realize I'm pushing my luck. Orange Steve could be back any second now, and I need to hide before that happens. I run off back into the forest, and position myself in a heavily grown-around tree covered in vines and more leaves than normal.

As I guessed, I soon hear lightning, and-

Oh dang it, there's more than one.

[3rd Person POV]

As Gerald sits back down next to Sabre, who stayed asleep through all of that somehow, he hears a familiar voice of an old friend.

"Nice job, Gerald. You got him good." The voice says, sounding almost ethereal. "I know he's just going to try again later, so be prepared for that."

Gerald lets out some happy and confident oinks and grunts, which the voice understands.

"I know, I know. I owe you." The voice says, chuckling. "How about when all of this blows over I can make something come up for Orange, so you can have another all-night party?"

Gerald seemingly agrees, but adds something.

"Alright. Deal." The voice says, and disappears as lightning sounds throughout the Hub.
