27-Home Sweet Home Lucy's POV

We got everything moved into the house the following day. We actually don't have enough to fill it since I had a one bedroom loft and this is 3 bedrooms. Zane set all of my art and music stuff up in the smallest room so we can make a spare bedroom out of the one. The house is cozy and it's better than I remember.

"Well love? Do you like everything?" Zane asks.

"I do. When are going shopping for the spare bedroom?" I ask.

Just then there's a knock on the door and Zane goes to answers it. It looks like a delivery guy, Zane signs some paper and props the door open.

I look at Zane with a million questions in my eyes and he says. "Joe and Martha took care of the spare bedroom and also next week they are having a patio built onto the back coming off of the sliding doors from the dining room."

"What, why would they do that for us?"

"Joe wants us to be at home." Zane says. "We are getting a pool too and the guy Joe bought the house off of wants to put in a guest house off the other end of the patio."

Realization hit me! "Is Joe doing this because of the son he had? Is Joe looking at you as that son?"

"Never thought about that. Maybe he is. I should talk to him?"

"I agree Zane. It's not healthy and besides what if he didn't have a son."

"What do you mean?"

"He never met his child. How does he know if it was a boy or girl?"

"Maybe that's what she told him." Zane says.

"I don't know. But you have to admit this is all weird. They have 3 children, why are they not saving the money for them?"

"That's a really good point Lucy."

The delivery guys start bringing furniture in. A simple queen size bed frame, queen mattress and box spring. Simple night stands to go with the bed frame and a matching long dresser. Zane walks in carrying a bag with a bed set in it and lays it on the bed and the one delivery guy comes in with two matching lamps.

Zane turns to look at me. "Wow this is a lot. I think we need to have a talk with Joe and Martha."

"Looks like we can talk to him now." I say smiling watching Joe walk toward the front door.

"Oh good you got the delivery!" Joes say excited.

"We did. But can we talk for a minute?"

"Uh oh." Joe says nervously.

"Joe why are you doing all this for us?" I ask.

"I see something in you kids, I want to help you build a life together. At the camp fire you said I hope that Zane and I have the lasting love that you and Martha do. Right?"

"I did say that. I meant it too." I say.

"Well I hope by you being here around us you can learn from us." He says genuinely.

"You've done enough though. You don't need to furnish the spare bedroom, build a patio and add on a guest house." Zane says.

Joe sighs. "I thought at first you were reminding me of what my son would have been like at your age and you kind of reminded me of me. The more I'm with you two though, Lucy reminds me more of me. I don't want to seem creepy and hope you don't take it creepily."

"Joe? How old would your son be today?" I ask.

"He would be 28. He was born October 12, 1987. So this coming October he would be turning 29." Joe says.

My heart sinks and my breath catches in my throat. I stand up and walk into the kitchen to get a glass of water. Zane rushes over to me and I feel his hand on my back.

"Are you ok?" He asks me.

"I'm fine. Just got nauseous." I lied.

"Not too much longer for the medicine. Just another week right?"

"Yeah something like that." I grab my water and go back and sit next to Joe. "I'm sorry, my medicine makes me sick suddenly sometimes."

"No worries honey. You're so young for that cancer." Joe says.

"Trust me Joe, I can wait to finish the medicine and go for my checkup to make sure it didn't grow back."

"I hope for your sake it didn't." He smiles putting a hand on my shoulder. "So are you both opposed to what we would like to do?"

"Are you talking about the patio, pool and guest house?" Zane asks.

"My birthdays October 12th!" I blurt out.

Zane and Joe stop talking and look at me stunned. Neither of them know what to say. I stand up and go over to the sliding doors to let some air. I feel like I'm suffocating and the silence is horrid.

"Um so do you know your biological mom? Or even her name?" Joe asked.

"Aunt Rita says her name is Daphne." I answer.

As soon as I say my mothers name, Joe's face goes white as a ghost. Zane looks between us trying to make sense of what we aren't saying.

"As in Daphne Higgins?" Joe asks.

"Yes, my last name is also Higgins."

"Do you know who your dad is?" He asks.

"No I don't. As soon as my mom had me she handed me over to my aunt and uncle and never looked back."

"You said you and family are all from Washington?" Joe asks.

"Yeah born and raised."

"Well me too. Should we uh get uh a DNA test"

"Yeah we should. But what if it comes out that I am your daughter? Will you be disappointed I'm not a son?"

He walks over to me pulls me into a tight hug. "Son or daughter does not matter to me. You already feel like my family."

I embrace his hug and we stand there hugging for what feels like hours. There's something comforting about his embrace, like he is my father and we mold together perfectly. I've hugged my Uncle Rick but his hugs were much different.

Joe let's go of our hug and pulls out his phone. "I'm going to call a friend to see what we need to do."

"Ok. What if I'm not your daughter?" I ask.

"Doesn't matter to me. Like I said. You are already like family."

Hello Sebastian. I need a favor.

Remember when I told you about a child I had almost 29 years ago?

I think I found her.

I know I said it was a boy but that's what Daphne told me.

Ok great! Thanks, I owe you one.

"He's coming over with a DNA test." Joe says.

"Oh ok. Ha that's fast." I say.

"Lucy can I talk to you alone for a minute?"Zane asks.

I nod my head and follow him into our bedroom. He sits down on the bed and takes my hands in his.  He has a serious look on his face and takes a deep breath.

"Are you sure you want to do this Lucy?" He finally asks.

"It won't hurt to know will it?"

"But what if he turns out not to be your dad? Will you be disappointed?"

"No because I've gone this long without knowing so what's a little bit longer?"

"I know babe but I don't want you to be crushed if he doesn't turn out to be your dad. I know you are saying that you will be ok but I think deep down you want him to be your dad." Zane says circling the back of my hand with his thumb.

"You're right, secretly I do hope he's my dad because yes both my parents not being in my life truly sucks. But I was lucky enough to have Aunt Rita and Uncle Rick raise me and I wasn't alone. I was fortunate to have them and getting to meet and know my dad will be an added bonus." I explain.

"You make a valid point. Whatever happens though, know I'll be behind you no matter what." Zane says planting a kiss on my cheek.

I turn my face to him planting a kiss on his lips and caress his cheek. "I love you."

"I love you too." He says grabbing my hand leading me back to the living room.

"There she is! Sebastian this is Lucy and her fiancé Zane." Joe says.

Sebastian steps forward and shakes Zane's hand the places his hands on my should to kiss me on the cheek. I shiver with nervousness. This is starting to feel real.

"Ready?" Sebastian asks.

I look at Joe. "Yes let's do this."

"Ok it's just going to be a mouth swab. It collects the saliva from inside your mouths and allows us to pull the DNA." Sebastian explains.

He reaches into his bag pulling out two mouth swabs in plastic. He then pulls two containers out for him to slip the swabs into once he swabs our mouths. He starts with me first and swabs along my gum line and around my cheek making sure it gets nice and wet with saliva. He slips the swab into the container pulls a sharpie out and writes my name on the bottle. He then turns to Joe doing the same thing swabbing inside his mouth. He then slips Joe's swab into the container and writes his name on it.

"All done. I'm going to drop these off at the lab and see if we can get a rush to know no later than tomorrow. How does that sound?" Sebastian says.

Joe and I nod our heads and Sebastian walks to the door. He turns back toward us and shakes Zane's hand, Joe's hand and again kisses me on the cheek. Joe stands in the doorway watching Sebastian leave.

"Well that's that." Joe says.

"Nervous?" I ask.

"A little bit. I'm hoping it comes back positive. I've always wanted to know my child." Joe explains.

"I can kind of relate only I've always wanted to know my father. I've given up hope for my mom because she simply wants no part of me, no matter how much I try."

Joe gives me a sympathetic smile and hugs me tight. "No matter what baby girl I'm going to be here for you along with the kids and Martha."

"Martha! How's she going to take it if it comes back that I am your daughter?" I ask.

"Lucy I've looked for you, as far as I knew Daphne took you to an agency. I called every single agency and no one knew of you and it's probably because I was under the impression I had a son. Martha has helped me look, Martha has helped me research. If you so happen to be my daughter than she will be happy."

"Joe I hope so. I don't want to cause any problems with anyone."

"Lucy let's just wait for the results and go from there, but I am 90% positive I'm your dad."

I do my best to smile but inside I'm feeling tortured. I should feel happy, I should be hopeful, but I'm not, I'm scared.

"Well I'm going to help Martha with dinner and fill her in with what's happening. Be at the house at 5:30 for dinner." Joe says.

"Actually sir if you don't mind, I'd like to cook for Lucy tonight since we really haven't had much time to breath together for a few days with the move and all." Zane says.

"Of coarse Zane. I can respect that." Joe says heading out the door. "See you all tomorrow then." He smiles and walks back to his house.

"Are you ok?" Zane asks.

"A bit overwhelmed, but yeah I'm ok. I hope the results come back tomorrow."

"Are you feeling ok? I mean you're nearing the end of your chemo pills and wanted to make sure you are still good."

"Yeah I am good Zane. Don't worry please."

"No headaches, no blurred vision, nothing?"

"Nothing Zane. I am feeling pretty good."

"Good. Now alone at last!" Zane shouts and swiftly pulls me into him pressing hard against my lips. "Now I make you dinner!" He says pushing his chest out like Tarzan beating on it.

I laugh so hard I had tears running running down my cheeks and he makes more faces and grunts like a gorilla all the while pounding on his chest. I slap his butt and run into the bedroom as fast as I can, he catches up and scoops me into his arms throwing me onto the bed.
