Ch 06 - Mermaid Tears
You could see the Southern Isles, if the wind continued like it did now, you would arrive at port within the next hour. You knew you were going to have to make a decision, and quickly. "Sir, the holding tank is ready. Should we put the mermaid in now?" a shipmate asked.
You nodded, "They won't believe us unless she's got a tail, do it." you said, "But try not to force her, tail or no tail she's still a mermaid and can easily kick all of your asses." He nodded and walked away. You sighed, "Poseidon you must have a cruel sense of humor to have me capture the one mermaid in the sea that I actually give a damn about." You muttered.
You were in your quarters. You weren't sure how long it had been, but obviously the wind wasn't in the mood for cooperation. It was slowing your progress, the letter you sent back to the Southern Isle was sure to have arrived by now and you promised your family that you'd be home within 24 hours of when they got that letter.
"Captain," you first mate said, "maybe we should raise the sails and drop anchor for an hour, I'm sure your family will understand if you're unable to fulfill one promise because of a force of nature." He explained.
You pulled the small snowman doll out of your pocket and closed your eyes, but then they opened filled with determination. You put the snowman on your desk next to your flute, "Gather the crew members and prepare to use the oars, keep the sails down in case the wind picks up." You said, "Mother Nature if you're watching I have a small message for you." you said looking out the porthole and flipping it off. You turned to your first mate, "We're men of the sea, we don't solely rely on the wind. We're going to get home whether or not nature wants us to."
Your first mate chuckled, "Aye aye Captain (Y/N)." he said and walked to a place where he could give the announcement.
You were below deck looking at the men at their rowing positions rowing to the beat of the drum, "Are you the members of my crew or not?" you called out, "We're going to get home as fast as humanly possible which means I want you all to work your hardest. If any of you collapse, somebody come retrieve me and I'll take their place." You knew these men were strong enough to do this job, but you weren't taking any chances.
You walked into the cargo hold where you found Elsa in another glass coffin, how Hans knew to load more than one onto your ship you had no idea, at least whoever put her in there still had the decency to keep the lid open, "I take it your happy to be back in the water," you said walking up to the coffin.
She shrugged, "It's refreshing, but I'd rather have a little more room." She admitted.
"Well, when all this is over I'm sure things will be better for you." you said sitting down, you weren't really so sure with your words. You didn't know what Hans would do to her after you handed her over to him, assuming that you were going to hand her over.
Elsa looked over at you, "You know, I've never met anyone like you (Y/N)." she said.
You blushed a bit, "Well most people that meet me want to get rid of me so I'm sure you're not alone." Elsa laughed, damn you loved hearing that sound.
"Well you are different, but..." she said, before you could question her she leaned over and kissed you on the cheek, "it's a good different." She said.
Your face felt on fire, you felt like jumping up and doing a merry sea jig. You cleared your throat and stood up and started to walk backwards, "W-well, it was a nice talk, but I guess I better get below deck," you said before nearly slapping yourself, "I-I mean above deck, you know steering and commanding... I'm just gonna go." You said turning around and walking straight into a wall, you jumped back "Whoops, I hit the... thingy." You couldn't think straight, so you just shut up and ran above deck. Elsa tried not to giggle as she watched you go, you really were different.
You knew it was official now, you were smitten with Elsa. Never before had you felt like such an idiot, and you had done quite a few idiotic things in your life, but never have you felt like that in front of a girl. It's probably just her mermaid magic, just messing with your emotions and clouding you brain. You looked at the horizon and saw that home was close. The sooner you got this over with the better... right?
Hans was looking at the men in front of him, "When the ship comes into port, I want you to make sure (Y/N) has the mermaid, I want to make sure the mermaid didn't trick him into releasing her." He said and they nodded, "We aren't going to fail, not when we're so close."
When you ship pulled into port you gave the order to drop the anchor. The crew got to work, raising the sails, tying them down, lowering the anchor and putting the boardwalk out. When the boardwalk was put down a group of five men came onto your ship. You walked forward to bring them, "What can I do for you gentlemen?" you asked.
The leader of the five spoke, "We were sent by Prince Hans to make sure your special cargo was secure."
You nodded, "Very well, right this way." You said knowing they were going to need physical evidence.
The men watched Elsa in the container from the entrance to the cargo hold, "She truly is a vision." One of them said before turning to you, "You've done the royal family a good service (Y/N)," he said, "which is why I hope you realize that this is nothing personal." Before you could question them you felt something hard hit the back of your head and you went unconscious.
You opened your eyes, you groaned feeling an extreme headache and your vision was slightly blurry. You looked around to see the unfamiliar surroundings around you. You were surrounded by trees and you were in some form of a clearing. You felt something underneath your nose and then you were hit with a smell that cleared your vision and woke you right up, "Ah good you're awake." A voice said.
"Weaseltown?" you asked out of confusion, it sounded like him, but you weren't too sure.
"It's Weselton!" yep that was him alright, the short man came into view, "We apologize for our methods of bringing you here. It's just where we're bringing you is a large secret and we can't take chances." He explained.
"Where is Elsa?" you asked.
"The mermaid?" he asked, "She's fine, Prince Hans is taking good care of her, he's taking her to a very special location. They have a bit of a head start, but we'll catch up pretty soon I'm sure. You've done us a great service, but unfortunately your job is not yet finished." Duke said, "Not to worry, as long as you continue to cooperated you'll get your reward when all this is over. Can you stand on your own?" you didn't realize until then that some of Duke's men were holding you up.
Your stance was a little wobbly, but you were able to stand, "Where are we going?" you asked.
Duke turned around and started to walk a down and path that lead out of the clearing, "To where the plan will be finished." He said, a cryptic answer wasn't doing anything for you.
You looked around to see someone had what looked like a sack over their head, you assumed the person was a girl considering the person was wearing a dress, "Who is that?" you asked, Duke turned around.
"Leverage." Duke said simply when he saw where you were looking. "No more questions until we get there." He said walking again. You had a bad feeling about this.
Hans held up a hand for the men behind him to stop, they had arrived. The forest had ended and now they were at an ancient stone courtyard, there was a pool near the edge of the cliff with a pole with rusted chains attached to it at the rim. At the center of the courtyard was a small stone pillar-like altar that barely went to his chest. There are a few patches of moss here and there, but other than that the courtyard looked untouched.
Hans walked over to the pool, it was surprisingly clean and looked very deep, there was a good chance this was some form of underwater tunnel. Hans turned to the men holding the glass coffin, "Put her in the pool, but make sure to bind her hands to the pole first." Hans commanded. The men put down the coffin and opened it. Elsa hissed at them, but they paid no mind to it as they bound her hands with rope.
Hans approached Elsa when her hands were tied, "Do you know where we are?" he asked her, she didn't respond, "You're at one of the many shrines where the transfer of magic was performed, this one is specifically designed for mermaids." Elsa eyes widened slightly, "Don't worry it won't hurt, in fact it'll be over really soon. All we need is..." he said before plucking out a strand or two of Elsa's hair, "A hair, along with a few other things." Hans turned to his men, "Get one of the scales off her tail. We'll have the remaining elements when the others show up."
Ever since you started walking you were had a bad feeling about all this, especially about Duke and whoever the masked girl was. Now the sun was starting to set and it would be dark soon, "Stop," Duke said before turning around to face you, "We are almost at our destination. Remember, as long as you cooperate. Everything should go smoothly. If not, well I can't make any promises." He said before turning around to walk again.
After turning a corner you saw that Duke had led you to an old stone courtyard, and your blood ran cold when you saw Elsa in the pool chained to a pole. "Ah good, you've arrived." Hans said drawing your attention away from Elsa. "I gotta say (Y/N), you definitely have a good eye when it comes to mermaids." He commented.
"She has a name." you said, or more rather growled. "Her name is Elsa."
Hans walked forward, "(Y/N), you really have no reason to worry, as soon as we get what we want from her she'll be free to go." He said, "All we need is a mermaid tear." He said.
"Then why did you bring her?" you said pointing to the masked maiden. For once Hans looked confused.
"Why did you bring the girl?" Hans asked Duke.
"Just in case we needed a sacrifice," he said, "you never entirely specified what this ritual would entail." You could clearly see that he was lying.
"He's lying," you muttered just loud enough for Hans to hear.
Hans briefly glanced at you before glaring at Duke, "Duke what is the meaning of this? Who is that girl and why did you bring her?" he demanded.
Duke sighed and took off his glasses and cleaned them off in a nonchalant fashion, "I am sorry about this, because it truly was an honor working with you." he said before snapping his fingers.
Without warning the men started to grab you and Hans. You and Hans tried to break out of their grip, "Oh no, we'll have none of that." He said, he had a dagger clutched in his hand and the guard next to him was holding the girl. The dagger's tip was underneath the girl's chin, "We wouldn't want something horrible to happen to this girl." He said.
At first you were confused as to what he was talking about, then the guard pulled off the mask. Both you and Hans froze, "Anna?" you said out of shock. Your sister was gagged and her eyes were filled with terror. Your (E/C) eyes filled with rage, "I swear if you do anything to her I'm gonna-" you were cut off by a fist punching your stomach.
Duke waved off your threat like it was nothing, "Now as long as you cooperate the girl won't be harmed." He said, "The first thing we need is a tear and that is going to be tricky. That's where you come in." he said walking to the pool.
"What are you doing?" you said as the guards brought you next to Duke.
Duke looked down at Elsa, "I could tell from the beginning that you care for this creature, and I'm pretty sure it cares for you as well." you wanted to strangle him for regarding her as that, "Let's see how it handles seeing you in pain." You didn't like the sound of that.
The next ten minute were nothing but pure literal torture, you were hoping that your sister had turned away when it started. You could almost feel her flinch every time you grunted in pain. Duke made a grunting sound out of frustration, "Nothing," he muttered with an angry expression. He walked over to you, "Let's see how she handles loss." He said and he slid his dagger across your throat.
Elsa and Anna watched in horror as you collapsed to the ground. Duke took one last look at Elsa, her expression she that she was close, but she steeled herself forcing her tears back, "Your toughness is admirable," he remarked before turning towards the men, "Send his body over the edge I no longer want to see it." the two guards that were holding you down dragged your body over to the edge of the cliff before tossing it off.
Anna felt tears sting her eyes and twisting her head she was able to get the gag off, "YOU BASTARDS!" she screamed as more tears streamed down her face.
Duke took a brief glimpse at Anna before turning to Elsa, "There are more ways to extract tears," he said before turning to the guards, "Raise her hands higher so she's more out of the water, possibly her drying out will get us some results." Duke commanded, but he knew it wouldn't be necessary. "In the meantime," he said while walking towards Hans, "You are going to tell me how to perform this ritual."
You didn't feel anything until your body hit the water. You were sure what happened, when Duke slide the knife across your throat you felt something press against you. One of the guards must've somehow temporarily paralyzed your body. You started to swim up seeing you were beginning to sink. You broke the surface of the water gasping for breath, you tried not to make too much noise as you swam back to the cliff. When you found the first handhold you reached a hand up and grabbed it. Your grip on the cliff ledge was strong, but the torture you just went through made it quite difficult as you pulled yourself up. You knew you were going to have to go a little slow if you were going to make this climb.
After Hans finished telling Duke the ritual, Duke told the guards to put him and Anna down, but not without tying them to a rock to make sure they didn't get away. Hans looked at Anna who still hand tears staining her cheeks, "I'm sorry about your brother." He said.
Anna looked at Hans before looking back at the ground wiping her tears away the best she could with the shoulder of her dress, "It wasn't your fault." She said.
"Actually in this case it kind of was," he said with a slight sigh, "I mean I never wanted things to turn out like this and I wasn't prepared for this. So yeah this is kind of my fault." He said, "Now Duke is going to get the power and I have no idea what he's going to do with it."
"Isn't there a way to stop the power before Duke gets it?" she asked. Hans thought about it, he knew it couldn't be stopped when the ritual started. When the power was extracted it had to be deposited. He started to think of anything he could do.
By the time you started to get close to the top of the cliff the moon was pretty high in the night sky. Your hand finally reached the top edge of the cliff and you made sure you had a secure grip before pulling yourself up onto it. You took a few breaths when your entire body was back on the cliff. Then you got to your feet.
You found Elsa sitting in the pool, the water was strangely glowing blue under the rays of the full moon, "Elsa," you whispered. Elsa's eyes widened at the sound of your voice, "I'm going to get you out of this." You said as you started to examine the binds attaching her hands to the pole.
"You came back," she said softly, "to save me?" you looked into Elsa's eyes.
"Well you're different, but a good different." You said with a heartfelt smile. Elsa's eyes shimmered as she smiled.
"Very good (Y/N), I knew I could count on you." a weasel-like voice said, then you were grabbed from behind and someone pulled Elsa's head back. There was a single tear trying to slide down her cheek, the man caught it in a small bottle and handed it to Duke, "Tears of Sadness are nearly impossible to collect, Tears of Joy on the other hand... it's said they're the more powerful type anyway."
You looked down at Elsa, "Elsa I swear I had no part in this," something about Elsa's expression said she didn't quite believe you.
Duke grinned holding up the bottle, "We have all the ingredients and just in time too," he said looking up, "The ritual can only be done when the moon is high, and how lucky am I to do it under a full moon." He said walking to the stone altar in the center of the courtyard.
Duke examined the altar when he walked up to it, the only thing on it was a stone bowl and the hair and the mermaid scale next to it. There was also a small stone cup and knife that looked carved from the same stone as the cup. Duke took the cup before turning and walking back to the pool. He dipped the cup inside and filled it with the glowing light blue water. He walked back to the altar, but before he did he turned to the guards holding you down, "Tie his leg to something heavy, if he tries anything. Send him off the edge again, this time we'll make sure he stays down there." He said, the guards nodded and got to work.
Anna's eye widened at hearing that. She knew she had to do something to help. She looked around her to see no one was paying attention to her, then she started to twisted her hands and felt them begin to come loose. When she got one hand loose she started to work on the other. When that hand was free she scooted over a little and started to work on the ropes binding Hans' hands. When the ropes were untied she whispered in her ear. He nodded.
"The ritual shall begin," Duke said, "The water blessed by the moon's rays," he said pouring the cup into the bowl, "The tear of a sea witch," he said pouring the bottle. When the tear dropped into the water there was a change in the color, it was now ocean blue "The scale of a siren," he said grabbing the ice blue scale into the water. The scale seemed to dissolve as it sunk completely disappearing before it hit the bottom, now the water was sea green "The hair of an ocean-born maiden." He said placing the strands of platinum blonde hair into the water and then the water was covered in sea green flames.
Elsa gasped as she felt as if something was grabbing at something inside of her, her tail began to glow and the glow of the water increased. You looked at Elsa, she looked like she was in immense pain. You wanted to help her, but the guards and the weight on your leg held you back. Elsa's tail started to change into legs and ice blue magic started to flow out of her body and out of the water and into the sea green flames slowly turning them ice blue.
Duke looked at the altar the fire being reflected in his spectacles, "It is nearly complete," he said looking at the knife, "All that remains is a blood sacrifice to accept the powers this ritual shall give." He said he tried reaching for the knife, but a small rock hit the side of his head.
Rubbing his head he turned to see Anna had gotten free of her binds and had thrown a rock at him, in her hand was another rock ready to fire, "Anna stop," Duke heard your voice behind him. Duke turned to see that you were trying to struggle.
"Drop him," Duke said and the guards nodded before grabbing the weight attached to your leg and throwing the weight along with you off the cliff.
"(Y/N)!" Anna shouted, a guard grabbed Anna's arm and the second guard grabbed the other. Duke grabbed his dagger and walked toward Anna.
"Don't worry about your brother," he said raising the dagger, "you'll be seeing him very soon." He said and he brought the dagger down.
Anna looked away and waiting for it, she heard the blade pierce flesh, but she didn't feel any pain. She opened her eyes and looked in front of her and was amazed. Hans had stepped in front of her and took the dagger for her.
Hans grunted at the pain in his chest, but he shook it off, grabbed the dagger by the handle and yanked it out before slashing Duke across the chest and punching his face, "You always were a weasel." He said. Hans turned around to look at the guards holding Anna. The guards let go and took a step back. Hans took a look at Anna before collapsing to one knee, "Hans," Anna said rushing to his side.
"I'm fine," he said breathing heavily, "But Anna, I need you to do something." Hans said briefly explaining things giving her a good idea of what to do.
"Okay," she said, she was about to stand up, but then she punched Hans in the shoulder.
"What was that for?" he asked with as much disbelief as he could muster.
"For scaring me," she said before leaning in and kissing him on the cheek.
Now Hans was a little dazed, "Okay, what was that for?" he asked.
Anna smiled sweetly, "For everything else." She said before standing up and walking towards the altar.
Anna grabbed the stone knife off the altar, she looked back at where Hans was sitting. Then she turned and ran to the pool where the mermaid was. She looked a little weak as she looked up and Anna, "Sorry about this," she said before cutting her hand a little with the stone knife. When Anna saw that there was blood on the blade she ran back to the altar and held the knife over the flames where a few drops of the mermaid's blood dripped into it.
The flames went out for a second before suddenly coming back to life even larger than before. Anna jumped back not knowing whether or not the flames would burn her. Ice blue magic started to come out of the flames and into Elsa. Elsa's body began to glow. This continued until the flames were gone and there was nothing left in the bowl.
Anna ran back to Elsa and when the glow faded she saw that she had her tail again, "Please help (Y/N)," she pleaded softly as she cut her binds. Elsa made brief eye contact with Anna before diving down into the pool and swimming down the tunnel.
You tried to free yourself as you sunk to the ocean floor. The water wasn't that deep as it could've been, but it was still over 20 feet. You were losing air and quickly. When the weight hit the sandy bottom you knew you didn't have much time. You pulled at the bind on your leg, but you pulled got weaker and weaker and your vision started to blur. You heard something move through the water and towards you. you did you best to look up, Elsa was swimming toward you.
When Elsa swam up to you she knew you wouldn't survive for much longer. She swam to the robe attached to your leg and untied it. She swam up as saw your eyes were beginning to close and bubbles were leaving your mouth. Elsa's eyes filled with worry and she cradled your face with both her hands hoping to get some form of reaction from you.
Elsa was starting to lose hope that even if she brought you up to the surface that you wouldn't come back. Then she got an idea, she leaned in and kissed you softly on the lips. Elsa's lips briefly glowed with an icy blue light before she pulled away to see if that did anything. She felt her spirit soar when she saw your (E/C) eyes open slowly. She then knew you had to get to the surface quick. She started to swim pulling you up with her.
Elsa broke the surface of the water and started pulling you towards the shore. When she traveled far enough up the shore where you could lie down without the risk of drowning again you started to cough out water and taking in deep breaths of air. You started to push yourself up, you looked back at Elsa. She looked at you, but then back at the ocean. You knew what she was thinking about.
When she looked back at you, you gave her a look silently asking her to stay, she looked down before looking back up, "Goodbye," she said in a tone that sounded sad before she dove back into the water and disappeared from view.
"(Y/N)!" you turned to see Anna and what looked like an injured Hans, Anna ran towards you. You had a hard time standing up and was almost knocked back down by Anna hugging you, "Are you alright?" she asked squeezing you tightly.
"I'll answer that once I get my air back," you wheezed. Anna realized what you meant and loosened the hug allowing you to breath, "I'm fine, for the most part." You said after catching some of your breath.
Anna looked around, "Where's the mermaid?" she asked.
"Her name is Elsa," you said looking out at the ocean, "but it doesn't matter. She's gone now."
"Oh." Anna said a little disappointed, "I never got a chance to thank her." She said looking out at the ocean, "Do you think she'll come back?" she asked.
You looked away from the ocean and started walking up the beach, "I doubt it," you said, "but I certainly hope so." It was true, you did hope to see Elsa again. As you walked up the beach you could still feel the feeling of her lips against yours. "I most definitely hope so."
-THE END- .........Or is it?
