Ch 02 - An Offer

You were leaning against the wall of your house trying desperately hard not to fall asleep, but considering how long your sister was taking it was going to be hard. "(Y/N), none of these look good on me." Anna's voice made you wake up, your royal lunch with the prince was in half an hour and Anna couldn't find anything 'presentable' enough.

"Well I'd like to see at least one on them," you said, "you know what, whatever your wearing, just come out and for once get a second opinion on it."

"Alright," she said, when she walked out your eyes widened. She was wearing a dress that was far too poufy for anybody to be wearing. Anna must've seen your look, "hey you said whatever I was wearing."

"Okay what stupid sea barnacle gave you that?" you asked. It was ridiculous, every time she took a step, all the unnecessary folds and poofs of the dress would shake.

She giggled, "You did," she said. You covered your eyes.

"Well I must've had an extreme headache or someone got me on the rum at that time," you said, "I personally don't know why you kept that kind of a dress."

"It was a gift," she said, "but I'll take it off, I think it makes me look fat anyway." You weren't going to make a comment on that statement. You heard the door close and you uncovered your eyes.

"Okay new plan, grab the dress you like the most and put it on, then show me what you look like in it." you said. You began to wait.

She was taking a while, as usual. You started to pull out you flute and play it a little. You played a few notes of the melody you used to put Olaf to sleep last night before removing the instrument from your mouth. It was a beautiful tune people thought you created yourself, but that wasn't true. It was a tune you heard before. The same day you and the crew was attacked by the mermaids.

Flashback

You pulled yourself onto the wood a hand still clutching the slashed part of your face. You looked around at the thrashing ocean seeing you shipmates disappear under the waves. You could feel yourself getting weak from the blood you were losing from the slash on your chest and the cold ocean was biting at your skin. You had to get out of here.

Using your free hand as a makeshift oar you started to slowly move away, you were trying not to pull attention to yourself. Otherwise those mermaids would be pulling you to the depths as well. You soon were far enough away that the thrashing of the waves was dim. You felt yourself getting weaker, but you didn't think about it much when you felt something stir in the water.

You looked over into the calm ocean water seeing only your (S/C) face looking paler than usual and some of the right side of your face was marked with blood. Both your (E/C) eyes looked bloodshot due to exposure to salt water.

The moon came out from behind the dark clouds casting a light over the water. You saw something glimmer in the water, you didn't know what it was until something came out of the water pinning you to the wood a hand at your neck and you heard a deadly hiss. Your vision was slightly blurry, but you knew it was a mermaid that had probably followed you. It was official you were going to die.

You felt the grip on your neck loosen and then you felt a soft hand... stroke your face? All you could see was a blurry shape above you. Was the mermaid being... compassionate? You felt water crawl up the sides of your face, then you heard the mermaid begin to sing.

Let it flow, let it flow,

have the water do what I say.

Let it flow, let it flow,

Have the agony go away.

It was the most beautiful voice you ever heard. Blue magic began to circle you as the water flowed into the wound on your face and you felt it begin to close and you felt your strength return.

I don't care, what they're going to say.

Let the waves rage on.

Your vision fully focused and you briefly saw the mermaid, she was the most beautiful being you had ever seen. She gave you an enchanting smile.

You humans never bothered me anyway.

She sang the last line before diving back into the water where you caught a brief glimpse of her ice blue tail. You scrambled on the wood at the slight chance of seeing her again. Her head appeared above the water again. She giggled slightly seeing your face, she then brought hand to her lips before blowing you a kiss. A misty magic came towards you and when it made contact you slumped down onto the wood falling asleep.

"(Y/N), I'm done," Anna's voice brought you out of the memory. Of course it was more of a cloud of a memory, really the only things you could completely remember from that memory are the song, the healing and that the beautiful mermaid had an ice blue tail.

"Okay let me see it." you said and she walked out, she was now wearing a simple olive green dress with white sleeves with a slight collar at the neck(A.N. it's the dress she wore at the end of Frozen movie).

"So, how do I look?" she asked giving a small twirl.

You smiled, "Beautiful," you said making your sister smile, you looked at a nearby clock, "which is good because it's time to go." You added and grabbed your captain's hat and coat. Time to meet the prince.

You and Anna left Olaf with a babysitter and went to the castle. When you approached the gates you were stopped by the guards, "No one goes in unless on official business." You rolled your eyes at the guard's comment. You fished the invitation out of your coat pocket.

"How's this for official business," you said handing the guard the piece of paper. He looked it over.

"Go on in, the prince will be expecting you." He said stepping to the side.

"Did you hear that? The prince is expecting us!" Anna said and you were ready to cover your ears just in case she started squealing and fan girling.

"Just try not to get too excited, we don't know why he's invited us here." you said.

"Right, right, keep calm and stay focused." She said, you tried not to laugh at the fact that Anna could never keep focused, and if she found the prince even remotely handsome there was a better chance of you meeting Calypso than her keeping calm.

You were met at the doors to the castle by a short man with a thick mustache, "Ah, you must be our guests, (Y/N) and Anna (L/N) correct?" he said in a slight German accent, I nodded, "I am one of the king's most loyal advisors, I am Duke of Weselton." He said giving a deep bow, which only caused his wig to nearly fall off. Anna tried not to laugh.

"Pleasure to meet you Sir Duke of..." you started but you had a memory blank, "Weaseltown was it?"

Duke instantly straighten, "Weselton!" he said agitated, then he regained his composure, "It's Weselton, but don't worry it's a common mispronunciation, unfortunately." You heard him mumble with great annoyance, "Right this way, Prince Hans will be meeting us in the Dining Hall." He turned around and walked into the castle leading the way.

Duke stopped in front of a door and knocked a few times before entering. Waiting inside was a man about your age, his auburn hair and sideburns gave him a slightly older feel though. The sound of the door opening made the man turn around, "Our guests have arrived." He said walking toward us. "I am Prince Hans, and it is a great honor to meet you in person Captain (Y/N) (L/N)."

"Thank you milord," you said giving a slight bow, you saw him look behind you, "allow me to introduce my lovely sister Anna (L/N)." you said stepping to the side. Anna had a shy expression as she gave a slight curtsy. Hans gave her a charming smile and took a step forward, took one of her hands and kissed the back of it.

"Lovely doesn't begin to describe," He said and you saw Anna's face go several shades pinker than it was before. "Now why don't we get this little lunch started." He said walking back to the table, when the rest of us approached he pulled out a seat for Anna. You were going to have to keep an eye on him. If he gave any signs of ill intentions and tried to go after Anna. You were going to have a few words with him.

The lunch was a lot better than the stuff you were used to eating at sea, "So, (Y/N) how long have you been sailing as a captain?" Hans asked.

You thought for a minute, "Well it's hard to say, I went sailing all the time as a boy with my father, but to officially answer your question I started officially sailing almost four years ago and I've been a captain for two and a half of those years."

The prince nodded, "So I take it you've sailed through the Seas of Arendelle?" he asked, you were starting to get suspicious. Where was he going with this?

"A few times, each of them a huge risk if you know what's there." You said and Hans nodded.

"Yes I have heard of the storms and craggy rocks," he said turning to Anna, "you certainly have a brave brother Anna." He said.

"The best," she said sounding proud.

Hans nodded, then he seemed to remember something, "That reminds me, I have a gift for you Anna." He said and Anna perked up. Hans stood up and put a flat box in front of her.

Anna opened it and gasped, she pulled out an elegant dress, "Hans it's beautiful."

"Yes it is, why don't you go and try it on to make sure it fits." she nodded and almost ran out of the room.

You chuckled, "After today she'll probably kiss the ground you walk on." You said to the prince.

"Probably," he said agreeing with you, "so tell me, what have you seen in the Seas of Arendelle." He asked.

"Several storms, sharp rock and the remains of ships," you said purposefully leaving out the mermaids.

Hans raised an eyebrow, "From what I've heard you've seen much prettier sights than that while sailing there," so that's where he's going with this, "word say you've seen mermaids."

You sat back in your seat, "What? You gonna tell me I need to stop telling those stories and that it's impossible?"

He shook his head, "Quite the contrary, I actually have an offer for you," he said catching your attention, "you survived an encounter with the mermaids, so you know more than anyone where, when and how the attack. I could use someone like you," he said.

Your eyes narrowed, "To help you with what?"

"I plan to go out there and catch a mermaid," he said and there was a moment of silence, before you threw you head back and laughed loudly.

"Forgive me your highness," you said wipe some tears from your eyes, "but why in oblivion's name would you want to go near a mermaid much less catch one?" it was an honest question, you couldn't think of any reason why anyone would want to be around mermaids after what you went through.

"Magic," Hans said, "every part of a mermaid's being is magical. I did some research and found that there are several effects to the magic they have in them, particularly healing and youth." He said, "Imagine curing people of diseases, stopping people from dying too early, add more years to an old man's life you he can enjoy his life a little more. The music of a mermaid can influence the hearts of several people, we could end wars before they happen and establish better relationships with neighboring kingdoms, and that's just a drop in the ocean." He explained.

"You make a convincing offer Prince Hans," you said, "but I don't think I can survive another experience with mermaids, I was just lucky the last time."

"Well if you go through with it, I'm sure you want to survive in order to get back to your family." Hans said. Hans turned to Duke, "Bring it in." Hans said, Duke nodded and left the room.

A few minutes later Duke came back with a chest in his arms, he put it on the table, Hans stood up and you did too, the two of you walked to the chest and Hans opened it revealing a breath taking amount of gold, jewels and other precious valuable things, "This is only a portion of what I am offering to you to do this. If you are successful then your reward will be far greater." You looked at the chest, with that money you could buy a new ship, fix up your house, or maybe even a home in a different kingdom.

Then you remembered something, "Sir I can't just leave my family when I only got home yesterday and I can't leave them by themselves with winter on its way." You said.

Hans nodded, "Yes, your family does mean a lot to you." He thought for a minute then he muttered a few things to Duke. Duke shrugged and Hans turned back to you, "Maybe while you're gone your family can stay and be provided for here in the castle."

Now that you weren't expecting, "Okay wait, you want me to sail into the ocean this close to winter into treacherous seas to catch a magical and deadly mermaid and bring it back alive and you'll pay me a vast reward and give my family the royal treatment until I get back."

"Yes," he said, "do you think you can do it?"

You considered it, "Prince Hans, I'm a (L/N)," you said before smiling, "and we never turn down a deal like that." You said extending a hand, "You have yourselves a captain." You said and Hans shook your hand sealing the deal.
