Ch 01 - Stories

A page turned, then another, and then another. Each page depicting a beautiful woman with a tail replacing the lower half of her body; mermaids, "Yes... yes this is what I need." The man holding the book said. The man was in his early twenties and was sitting at a desk in what appeared to be a vast library.

"Prince Hans?" a voice asked, it was his father's advisor from Weselton; Duke, "May I ask what it is you're doing?" the short German man asked

"Research, studying what I think could be quite promising." The prince said closing the book.

"What?" he asked his eyes narrowing in suspicion behind his glasses. The prince stood up and walked to a nearby shelf.

"Duke," Hans began as he put the book back on the shelf and grabbed another one about mythology and he turned to the desired page, "what do you know about mermaids?" he asked as he walked back to his desk.

Duke scoffed, "Mermaids? Those cursed witches are nothing but superstitious nonsense." He said.

The prince looked at Duke, "I always thought you were a firm believer in sorcery and all that as you say 'superstitious nonsense' am I correct?" Hans asked.

"Sorcery yes, but beautiful sea maidens that prey on unlucky sailors. That is nonsense." He said defending himself.

"That may be true, but there are other things about mermaids that have captured my interest," Hans said putting the open book on the desk next to him, "They have magical properties in every part of their bodies, their hair, scales, blood, and most especially in their tears." Hans explained, "If the proper ritual is used than the magic can be extracted from these sources and give it to another source giving it great power." Now Duke looked a little more interested.

"That does sound quite promising, but that doesn't disregard the fact that they're still very dangerous. Their beauty makes any man falter enough so that before you can try to capture one they've already got you at the bottom of the ocean." He said.

"Yes that is a problem," Hans said, he read that the magic of mermaids only lasted as long as the mermaid was alive. He looked out the window when something caught his eye, a ship was coming into port. The (F/C) color flag with the (F/S) insignia on the flag was proof as to who the ship belonged to, "or maybe not, we just need someone... experienced." He said.

The Singing Siren was one of the most popular taverns for in the Southern Isles, people would go there to share stories, drink strong drinks of all kinds and just have a good time. The door to the tavern opened and everyone turned to see who was coming in.

The man who entered was about 22 years old with a strong build and (S/C) skin, his slightly longer than medium length (H/C) hair was slightly windblown and there was a captain's hat over it there was a very slight amount of facial hair on his face. A dark seaman's coat that was faded due to salt water spray was worn over a (F/C) shirt, dark pants and black boots. A leather belt with a gold buckle was around his waist with a sword attached at his side. His most noticeable feature was a long scar that started at his forehead and went down, across his right eye and ended at the bottom of his cheek.

"Captain (Y/N) (L/N)," the bartender said with a laugh, "the usual I presume."

You smiled showing off perfect teeth, "That's right, bring me a couple I have quite a few stories to tell." You said taking off your hat and putting it down.

Half an hour past and a group had formed itself around you as you spun the tale of your most recent adventure, "-And that's how I learned not to mess with the captain of Corona's security."

Somebody laughed, "Oh please (Y/N), no king in his right mind would leave a horse in charge of their guards."

You nodded, "That's what I thought too," you said before bringing the tankard to your lips and drink its contents, "a mistake I know not to make. If any of you ever visit Corona, try not to mess with the guard, especially if they're with a white horse." you said to everyone some of them just laughed.

"While you're at it, why don't you tell us the crazy tall tale of your little 'sighting' three years ago." A bulky sailor boomed from the bar.

Your smile faded and your (E/C) eyes became grim, "No 'tis not a tall tale, it's a true story. This here mark is proof of that." You said taking another gulp from your tankard and pointing to the scar on your face, "You've heard of the rumors of the Seas of Arendelle aye?" you asked and the sailors shuddered.

"Aye, the storms that brew there come straight from the devil's nostrils the rock are his deadly claws. It's a graveyard for ships." One said and others agreed with him.

You nodded, "Well three years ago I was part of a crew led by a captain crazy enough to sail those waters." You said staring into the frothy water of your drink. Your mind began to go into the memory and the drink started to turn dark blue, "That was when the storm hit."

Flashback begins, your view zooms in on your drink as the frothy beverage transforms into the foaming sea. Your view zooms in even more to reveal a ship caught in the middle of this monsoon.

You were 19, soaked to the bone and were helping your other shipmates with the ropes to better control the sails. Waves pounded against the sides of the boat. The wind howled in your ears and you could barely hear you captain shouting over the salty gale, "Tighten those ropes you band of cockroaches, I ain't dying today and neither are any of ye!" the swarthy sea man shouted as he pulled at the wheel turning it to make sure they stayed with the wind and not against it.

"It was almost as if the ocean was punching the side of our boat with its waves, lightning and thunder light up the stormy sky!" your voice narrated as large booms of thunder filled the sky and a wave crashed into the side sending a large amount of water onto the crew.

"(Y/N)!" the captain shouted and you let go of the rope and ran to where the captain was standing, but having a bit of trouble due to the intense rocking on the boat.

"Yes Captain," you said.

"Get to the starboard bow and keep an eye on the horizon, this bloody hell of a storm wants a war and we're going to give it one." You nodded and ran across the rocking ship to the front of the ship.

"I kept my eye on the horizon just as I was commanded, but that storm limited my vision greatly and the salty sea spray was blurring up my vision." The sea crashed against the front of the ship sending the spray into your eyes making it hard to see. You wiped the salt water from your face and looked ahead. The rain was falling heavily. Another crack of lightning lit up the sky and what you saw you didn't like.

"BRACE YOURSELVES!" you screamed to the crew members as you ran from the bow and behind you a giant crag of stone came into view. The captain quickly turned the wheel but the wind fought against it and the ship rammed straight into it and there was an explosion of wood and splinters that were quickly picked up by the wind.

"The ship crashed against the rock and the damage was catastrophic, but that wasn't the worst of it," you got to the other side of the ship and you looked back at the bow. The ship was starting to sink, and then there was a flash of light followed by an ear ringing boom as a bolt of lightning struck the ship's main mast setting it on fire. There was a crack of wood and the mast began to fall, "Lightning struck the main mast and the entire pole collapsed and the damage only got worse." The mast crashed into the deck of the boat and everything cracked sending more boards and pieces of shrapnel into the air. As you struggled to stay on your feet something whipped through the wind slicing the right side of your face.

You grunted in pain and put a hand over your right eyes closing it tightly to prevent any blood from going into it, but the wound still stung from the constant spray of salt water hitting your face. The ship was in pieces and the crew was either in the water or clinging to a piece of floating wood. Using your still good eye you scanned the ocean before jumping off the boat and into the water grabbing onto the side of a broken piece of the ship's wall that came loose.

The wind seemed to die after that and the sea started to calm, but it was still raining and the darkened clouds still remained. You looked around at the area around you, the storm was so violent. How could it just... stop? Then you heard something, it started soft and soon you could clearly hear it. It was a woman singing. It was a beautiful sound, but that couldn't be right. There weren't any women at sea, unless...

The was a cry of pain and one of the nearby sailors was pulled under, soon more sailors started to disappear under the waves, they would try to resist but there was only a furry of splashes before they would disappear too. "My fellow shipmates were disappearing quickly under the waves, that combined with the singing and sudden calming of the storm meant it could only be one thing..."

"Mermaids," you said, you got more onto the piece of wood. The other sailors had a similar ideas, but then what was in the water jumped out of the water like dolphins, grabbing the sailors and pulling them under. They were definitely mermaids.

The memory fades and your mind was back in the tavern.

"It was a day I try to forget at times, but events like that brand themselves into a man memory." You said taking a drink, "As far as I know I was the only one to have survived." You said finishing your tale.

"How did you survive?" someone asked.

You smiled, "That would be telling now wouldn't it." you said emptying your tankard. "Bartender another round if you please, it's time for me to hear some stories. Try to impress boys, next round is on me." there were hearty cheers from around the tavern.

A cloaked figure in the corner watch you as you finished your story, "The prince will want to hear about this." He said before leaving the tavern.

About an hour passed and after hearing a few stories and having a good time things died down. You walked to the bar tender putting a bag in his hand, "That should be enough to cover the cost of the drinks."

He chuckled, "Definitely," he said, "sure you can't stay a while (Y/N)? You bring an atmosphere that attracts customers like moths to a flame."

You smiled, "You know I can't." you said grabbing your hat and putting it on your head, "I still need to get home."

The bartender nodded in understanding, "Say hi to the beautiful sister of yours for me aye."

"Will do," you said before walking to the door and leaving the tavern.

You walked down a few streets and turning a few corners before arriving at your home. You walked up to the door and considered knocking, but you knew your sister wouldn't might once she saw you.

You opened the door and walked inside the house, you saw your sister was sweeping the floor, her strawberry blonde hair was in two braids like it always was. She sighed in annoyance and started to speak without turning around, "I told you before Logan, no matter how many times you ask I won't go out with you."

You chuckled and took you hat off and put it on a rack, "Well I'm not Logan Anna, but I can have a word with him if you want me to." Anna gasped and turned around her light blue eyes showed shock, but it quickly turned into joy.

"(Y/N) you're home!" she said running forward and embracing you in a bone crushing hug, had you not seen it coming you probably would've went unconscious. You wrapped your arms around your sister returning the hug. "I missed you."

"I missed you too," you said. You always hated leaving your family, but after your parents died four years ago you had to do what you could to help Anna keep the house, even if that meant leaving for weeks, maybe even months at a time.

"Anna? Who was at the door?" a boy asked and your little brother came into the room. He was a small six year old kid with light blond hair that always stuck up a bit at the top, he had the same light blue eyes Anna had. When he saw you he perked up and he smiled showing he slightly large front teeth, "(Y/N)!"

You pulled away from Anna's hug knowing you were in store for another hug, "Olaf," you said kneeling down and stretching your arms out, "who wants a warm hug?" laughing your little brother ran forward and nearly jumped into your arms hugging you tightly.

You put your brother down and stood up, "I have so much to tell you guys."

You told them stories of your latest journey until the sun started to set, "Wow that's awesome." Olaf said.

You rolled your eyes, "Yeah getting my butt kicked by horse will surely bring a smile to your face." Anna laughed.

"Well it's getting late," Anna said, "time to go to bed Olaf." Anna was a natural mother around Olaf, some people actually questioned whether or not she actually was.

"Aw, but I don't want to go to bed. I wanna stay up with (Y/N)." he said in a pouty tone.

You chuckled slightly, "Don't worry I'll handle this," you told your sister before grabbing Olaf without any warning and holding him upside down.

"Hey, put me down!" Olaf said, but you could tell he was trying not to laugh.

"I will just not here," you said going into Olaf's room and plopping him on the bed, "C'mon big guy you need to sleep."

"But I'm not tired," he said. You thought for a minute.

"What if I played for you, would that help you sleep?" you asked.

"Maybe," he said, Anna and Olaf loved it when you played. You reached into your coat and pulled out a flute. You sat down on Olaf's bed and brought the instrument to your lips and began to play a melody. It was one you knew all too well. (A.N. You're playing Let It Go on the flute).

After playing the beautiful song for a minute you saw Olaf had fallen asleep. You smiled and walked out of the room to find Anna out there, "You never fail do you?" she asked.

You put the flute back in your coat, "What can I say, I'm a (L/N)." you said. There was a knock at the door. You decided to answer it. It was the royal courier. "Can I help you sir?"

"A message for Mr. (Y/N) (L/N)," he said holding out a letter, a letter you accepted. You walked back inside.

"A letter?" Anna asked, "Who from?" you shrugged and opened it and read the letter, your (E/C) eyes widening as you read the letter. "(Y/N)?" Anna asked in concern.

"Better get your best dress Anna," you said lowering the letter, "the prince has invited us to the castle for lunch tomorrow."
