Garden of Shadows (P.2 of The Dragon and the Unicorn)

Disclaimer: I do not own Merlin or Come Little Children!!!

Hello~ Back with Part 2! I thought about it, and I decided that I will write a closing part to the cliff hanger of before. This will also give me practice for the future because I'm planning on writing a three-part story. (Oooh, spoilers, oh my!) And yes, they will also be using songs. There aren't enough Merlin fanfic with songs in them. But never fear, for I will change that! And if you don't like my songwriting, don't worry, I'll still write other fanfics, I just have so many Merlin ideas that use songs. They also help me keep some originality........big oof. Well, if you had the energy to read this, then you'll have the energy to read the rest. Have fun!

Previously:

"Forgive me, but we're looking for the druid camp's leader. Are you him?"

"Such a pity, Arthur." Emrys began, and he lowered his hood to look at the knights. Everyone gasped as Merlin looked right at Arthur and said: "I thought you would have recognized my voice by now."

Arthur, frozen by the shock from seeing his friend for the first time in two years, merely whispered, "Merlin? Is that really you?"

"Yes, it is Arthur. It's been a while hasn't it?"

Present:

Arthur couldn't speak. He couldn't think. Merlin, the man he has been searching for two years, was standing there, right in front of him, within an arms' reach. He just stared dumbly with his jaw dropped. He tried speaking many times, but only silence followed. Arthur regained his composure and finally spoke.

"Yes, it has." Arthur inwardly cringed. 'Way to blow your reunion statement,' a voice told him, but he hushed it.

Merlin studied Arthur for what seemed like an eternity until he finally nodded and looked around. Arthur wondered why he nodded. Did he pass some sort of test? Was Merlin expecting something? Arthur started to get extremely nervous thinking he messed up badly, but then Merlin spoke.

"You lot must be hungry. What kind of host am I, not feeding my guests. The rest of my camp has already eaten and is retiring, but I have time. Come, follow me."

Arthur and the knights followed Merlin to a small opening farther down where there was a smoldering fire with a pot and a few dishes. Merlin glanced back before he waved his hand. Suddenly, everything was flying. Dishes were cleaning themselves, the fire pit returned to its once bright fire, herbs and dried meat flew into the pot, and the pot settled down into the fire with a spoon sturring it. The knights' equipment also appeared, with each of their sleeping materials rolled out nicely. Gasps were heard through all of the knights, for they have never seen such blatant use of magic. Yes, Arthur has been slowly releasing the ban on magic, but many are still too scared to use it in Camalot. All but one knight watched in awe. One of the newer knights, Sir Galaway, unsheathed his sword. Merlin didn't react violently, nor act scared, he simply turned to the knight and smiled.

Merlin was still calm, but you could hear power and order laced in his voice. "Sir Galaway, a bowl won't hurt you, and if you're that cautious, I could eat your serving to prove that it's not poisoned. Besides, didn't your king ask of you to leave your weapon? Are you asking for war?"

Arthur was horrified. One of his knights not only disobeyed a direct order but also threatened the very same people they were trying to make peace with. Threatened the very same man he was trying to make amends with!

"Sir Galaway," Arthur said in a dangerously low voice, "You have ten seconds to explain why you have disobeyed my order and threatened Merlin."

Sir Galaway started to shake a little, realizing his mistake, but still pushed forward.

"Because sire," Galaway stuttered, "Magic is evil! This man used magic in front of your bare eyes! He's probably poisoned the food, and given himself immunity!"

"Guess I'm getting seconds," Arthur heard Merlin mumble. He would've laughed, for it was so Merlin if the situation was not as serious.

Before Arthur had time to punish his knight, Merlin walked up to Galaway. Galaway raised his sword higher, but then froze. Merlin's magic was holding him from swinging. He raised his hand towards him and opened his palm, and a small white flower grew.

"Does this, Sir Galaway, seem evil to you?"

The knight was getting desperate, so he continued to blindly shout "Yes, anything magic touches is evil! It probably has a curse on it!"

Merlin only shook his head and stepped away so he could release his magic on him. To say that Arthur was mad was an understatement. Arthur was livid. How dare his knight act in such a way! No man, no matter their status, should know not to be such a fool, especially in front of their king. Arthur decided that this man did not deserve his rank.

"Sir Galaway," Arthur stated in his most commanding voice, "you have disobeyed me, acted violently, and are blinded by personal feelings. You are hereby stripped of your knighthood and nobility and are banished from Camalot's lands. Take your leave now, and never return."

Galaway didn't need to be told twice. He retreated the camp faster than a fleeing doe. Merlin, who's attention shifted to the soup, happily announced, "Soup's ready!"

The knights gathered 'round at told their stories while they ate, but two remained quiet for the entire night.

Arthur woke in the middle of the knight, yet it wasn't his turn to do watch. In fact, it seemed everything was asleep. There was no sound. Maybe that's what woke Arthur, the lack of sound. Suddenly, there as a snap. Arthur tensed, praying that it wasn't bandits. Fate must have been on his side, for it was not bandits, it was...Merlin? Arthur didn't understand, why was Merlin up at this hour? He headed for where the druids were sleeping, and Arthur decided to follow, being as discreet as he could in the silence.

As Arthur followed Merlin, he noticed how swiftly Merlin moved, even when it was dark and they were in a forest. He observed from afar as Merlin began to shake the druid kids awake. As Merlin shook the last of the kids awake, he started to lead them away from the camp. As Arthur followed, he heard Merlin begin to sing.

"Come, little children, I'll take thee away,"

"Into a land of enchantment"

As Merlin lead the children away from the camp, tiny balls of light started to appear and created the path that they were following. They were all kinds of colors, and they glowed softly, as to not disturb the peace of the night.

"Come, little children, the times come to play"

"Here in my garden of shadows"

They had reached a beautiful lake, more gorgeous than any Arthur had ever seen before. As he hid behind a nicely placed boulder while still clearly seeing what's happening, he was astounded beyond compare as he saw Merlin walk on water.

"Ooooooooooooooh"

While Merlin was still singing, the other druid children took cautious steps on the water until they realized that they too can walk on it. As soon as this hit, they started to run around Merlin playing tag and enjoying themselves.

"Follow sweet children, I'll show thee the way,"

"Through all the pain, and the sorrows"

"Weep not poor children, for life is this way,"

While the other druid children were still enjoying their experience on the water, Merlin had gone over to a little boy who was away from the others. Arthur couldn't guess why, but the boy was crying.

"Murdering beauty and passion"

"Ooooooooooooooh"

Merlin held out his hand and the child took it. As they made their way back to the other kids, Arthur could see Merlin's eyes flash gold and then giant bubbles start to rise out of the water. The children squealed in delight and started to run towards the bubbles.

"Hush now dear children, it must be this way,"

"To weary of life, and deceptions"

"Rest now my children, for soon we'll away,"

"Into the calm, and the quiet"

Merlin's eyes glowed once more, and now new bubbles were rising up, but this time, they enveloped the children. They were shocked at first, but then this set them on a whole new excitement faze, as they tried to see if they could command their bubbles. Arthur laughed at the sight, for it was so heartwarming and so Merlin, giving these children a bubble experience with his magic. He did note however the sheer power Merlin must have, to be able to do all of this without even uttering a spell. He'd heard rumors of how Emrys was supposedly the most powerful warlock alive, and when he learned that Emrys was Merlin the day before....well, a lot of things clicked for the king.

"Ooooooooooooooh"

"Ooooooooooooooh"

"Ooooooooooooooh"

It seemed as if the very Earth was singing with him. The moon and stars were creating the perfect amount of light to enchant the song, the wind would bend to his voice, and it almost seemed as if the lake herself joined with Merlin in song. Though the children were playing around, Arthur could still tell how they were listening to his every word.

"Come, little children, I'll take thee away,"

"Into a land of enchantment"

"Come, little children, the times come to play"

"Here in my garden of shadows"

"Ooooooooooooooh"

"Ooooooooooooooh"

The bubbles came down and released the children back onto the surface of the water, and Merlin and the kids started walking back towards the shore. They were all laughing and thanking Merlin (though they referred to him as Emrys), asking if they could come again for the next night, Merlin laughed but shook his head. He told the little druids how he'd love to, but he had affairs to attend to in the morning. They were disheartened, but it quickly washed away as they reached the camp. With little struggle, all of the druid children were back in their camp safely asleep.

"That was a lovely song; you sang beautifully."

Merlin shot up and turned towards the voice, but it was only Arthur, who was standing near leaning on a tree. Merlin relaxed before answering guardedly.

"I didn't know we were followed."

Merlin saw how Arthur's eyes flashed with guilt as he looked at the ground. He fidgeted with his hands for a few seconds before finally looking up to meet Merlin's eyes once more.

"Merlin, I...I wanted to say that..."

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry, for everything."

Merlin was shocked. He never thought that he'd hear these words. Arthur saw his opportunity and continued, a new spark of hope filling him.

"I know what I did to you on that night you saved me was...unforgivable. I had punished and exiled you when you'd just saved my life. I accused you of horrible things, only to learn the truth too late. Guias told me what you've done, how you've saved my life more times than any of us can count and suffered through so much loss alone, all the while I was being the biggest prat of a prince -and king- towards you. I know that you have every right to hate me, and I won't blame you if you do, but I'm asking you -begging you- to please look away from the past and start over with me, brother."

Arthur was on his knees now, tears flowing down his eyes as he stared at the ground in front of Merlin. He would accept whatever Merlin said now as his fate, and he would take it even if it broke him inside. But he received no words, but a hug from Merlin, which he gladly returned.

"That is all I ask, brother."

They sat there hugging each other while crying on the forest floor. Neither knew how long they were there, but it didn't matter. What mattered was what was right now, as their bonds, though still badly wounded, were already healing. After a while, Merlin pulled away to look at his brother and king in the eyes.

"It will take time, but I want to come back, I want to make amends."

Arthur smiled brightly and added: "The only condition is that you explain to me all you've done, for Gauis could not fill us in on it all."

Merlin smiled back. "It will be my pleasure."

Yay! It's done! I started getting worried, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to publish, but I got it done! I hope you enjoyed this little sequel, but writing this has helped me prepare for upcoming chapters, for soon I will be writing a three-part as said before. I also wanted to do something a little less angsty, so hopefully, I succeeded. If you have any comments/requests, please leave them below, and I hope you have a lovely day/night!
