Laws of Camelot (Part 2)

Merlin POV

I was chucked ruthlessly back into my cell, i involuntarrily flinched as the door was slammed shut. I knew that Lancelot and the knights had a plan but it's hard to keep your faith when you've just been sentenced to death.

I was exhausted from the recent events, i still hadn't fully healed which made all my muscles scream with fatigue, waiting for release. Slowly i layed myself on the cold floor and curled up and shut my eyes.

"Let this be a lesson to you all. Camelot does not except sorcerers and the use of music. All those found and proven guilty of using enchantments are condemned to die. This piece of filth, Merlin, has being using magic under my nose for many years and now he is going to die." I shuddered as the noose was placed around  my neck. I saw Arthur's hand signal for the trap door to be opened. I heard the creak and the trap door dropped beneath me "ARGHHHHHHH!"

"ARGHHHHHH." i screamed and shot up off the floor. Sweat was dripping down my forehead and i took laboured breaths and realised it was just a nighmare. Just a nightmare... a nightmare that i'm currently living.

"Merlin!" Shouted i voice. I looked up to see Lancelot standing in my cell with a plate of food and some water. He placed it infront of me

"Can i have 5 minutes a lone with the prisoner?" Asked Lancelot. The guard reluctantly nodded and shut the door behind him.

"You okay?" Asked Lancelot

"Yeah, just a nightmare." I replied breathless.

Lancelot looked at me with concern but carried on talking

"When you hear the hoot of an owl we need you to lay very still and you need to shut your eyes." Said Lancelot, "Then we will take you out the cells as you're 'dead'

Whilst most of the knights are helping you escape Elyan and Mordred will tell Arthur of your death which will buy us some time and make him feel guilty. Realising this he will hopefully lift  you of your crimes. A few days later we will pick you up from Ealdor and you will return to Camelot a free man."

"Is this going to work?" i asked

"It better." replied Lancelot, "eat up, it's going to be a long night."

Lancelot left the cells and the guard locked the door. It is quite an ingenius plan but it all depends on whether Arthur cares about me. To be honest, i don't anymore.

I felt restless as the hours ticked by, i was glad when it became dark as i knew they would choose the cover of night to get me out. It felt like ages since Morgana's attack. Whilst sitting in the cell and i thought back to the days where Morgana and i were friends. I miss her so much.

"OO-OO, TWEET-TWOO." Twooted an owl. I guess this was it.

I lay on the floor facing the wall and shut my eyes. My heart was hammering in my chest as i heard footsteps approach.

"He's dead." i heard Leon say to a guard. He looked at me and nodded discreetly.

"I'll take him." said Leon but with the undertones of authority shining through. He picked me up by the arms and dragged me out the cell. He rounded the corner and i opened my eyes to see Percival, Gwaine and Lancelot waiting for me. When we were out of sight Leon told me i could open eyes. I stood up and opened my eyes, adrenaline still pumping through my veins

"Thank you, i am forever in your dept." i said

"Honestly, Merlin, you've saved all of us more times than i can count. It's the least we could do." admitted Gwaine

"Follow me." instructed Percival. I nodded and we walked in the shadows and ducked into walls and past guards. It was a horrible feeling to be running from your own home. We turned right and then left and ran down the tunnels. It was the same tunnel Mordred ran down when he was escaping Camelot. We made it to the end where the metal grate was. On the other side was a horse and a blacksmith. He had removed the bars and made an opening for us to get through.

"As soon as we've left you need to remake this grate. Not a word of this to anyone." Leon instructed and handed the blacksmith a pouch of coins. The blacksmith got to work immediately and we rounded the corner. I mounted the horse, i was still too weak to transform, and watched as the knights transformed around me. We galloped into the Darkling woods at the dead of night... faces grim. Eventually we slowed down and stopped.

"This is as far as we can go before the alarm is raised. You have plenty of supplies to get to Ealdor. We will meet you in two days hence so you can return to Camelot." told Lancelot, "Merlin, good luck. Don't go running in to any trouble."

"I'll try." i smiled faintly and galloped into the night.

Arthur POV

There was a solemn knock at the door.

"Enter." i said, the weight of Merlin's trial still playing on my mind. I turned to see Mordred and Elyan just infront of the doors. Their heads were bowed respectfully and they were silent.

"What's your business here?" i asked, a little impatiently.

"I'm sorry Sire but..." began Mordred

"Merlin died earlier this evening." continued Mordred after choking on his words.

"W-what?" i stuttered.

"He died from the shock, and fatigue of his predicament. He wasn't fully healed and his injuries helped cause his death." explained Elyan

"Don't lie to me!" i shouted at the knights

"Sire, you were going to execute him. Why are you so upset?" questioned Mordred with hints of disgust in his voice

"I didn't... i didn't mean for it to get this far." i stated numbly, "did he have a painless deathless?"

"I would love to say he did but his agony was long and he suffered too much for his petty crime." admited Elyan

"Leave me." i ordered, feeling the tears starting to spill out of my eyes.

His blood was on my hands. I barely heard the clank of the door shut. The tears began to flow freely and i sat down on my bed... head in my hands.

"What have i done?" i whispered to myself.

Merlin didn't deserve the way i treated him. He was doing it all to protect me. I finally understand but it's too late for me to do anything. The amount of times he has saved me and i repay him with the hangmans noose. Merlin had just revealed a huge secret and i needed to be there for him but i wasn't. In his darkest hour he needed me but i turnt my back on him. Look at the mess i've made.
