When Mr Invisible became visible
I guess you could say Merida DunBroch was popular. Oh who are we kidding she was extremely popular. She was the star of the soccer team, she grew up with Ian MacIntosh, Rapunzel Corona, and Ronnie Dingwall. The most popular kids in school.
And he was just Hiccup Haddock. The boy no one really noticed. The guy who you would copy homework off of but usually not speak to him again.
Yep that was his life. He did have one best friend besides his dog Toothless. His best friend Jack was always a great friend. Jack was definitely less invisible then he was. Mostly due to his bright white hair he dyed last summer, but he was also pretty charismatic. He always wonder what he saw in me. He always expected he would leave me someday to hang out with his other friends but he never did. He always was his first choice.
Now he just wished Merida felt that way about him. Although he didn't really do anything to get her to notice him.
"Hiccup all you have to do is impress her!" Jack said.
"How do I do that?" Hiccup asked
"I don't know what does she like?"
"All the stuff I can't do." Hiccup replied.
"Oh I'm sure there's something...."
"Soccer, archery, surfing, and boxing." Hiccup stated
"Yikes you really no how to pick em,"
Bell rings
"Yeah and now I get to be unseen by her all through study hall." Hiccup said.
Merida looked around the class. 'That's weird' she thought. He's not here today. Hiccup Haddock had become a new interest to her. She started noticing him in the beginning of the year. He always looked concentrated during study hall but his eyes looked like he was trying avoid someone's gaze.
"What does he do all study hall." She wondered. "She knew for a fact he didn't do homework because he never took out notes or even a text book. He just took out this little black book and started moving his pencil.
Maybe he's a writer or something. He could be in creative writing she once thought, but she walked pass the only period for creative writing and he wasn't there.
She didn't know why she was so intent on finding out what he was doing during that study hall class or why she didn't just walk over to see.(Actually she had but he was always covering the book with his upper body.) today she was finally just going to ask.
"Mr. Haddock you're late." The teacher said
"Sorry I forgot uh something. But I have it now." He said.
"Alright class go on and study."
That didn't really happen in study hall. Sure kids would actually do homework in the class but most of them just talked about school and life.
She turned to see him sitting behind her. She finally decided to ask him.
"What do you do?" She asked.
He slowly lift his head up turning around to see if she was talking to someone else.
"Yes I'm talking to you I'm curious what do you do in that little black book of yours?" She said
"Oh......I.....uh sketch." He said trying to remain calm.
"Really?! What to do you draw?"
"Almost anything." He said.
"Can I see?" She asked.
He thought about his sketchbook and about how many pages contained ink interpretation of her hair. 'Although he had taken out some of the pages of rough drafts. no still too risky. Well you have your one from last year. And you didn't have Merida in study hall so there shouldn't be drawings of her in there.
"Uh well I don't let people see usually until I'm done....but I can show you mine from last year."
"Okay." She said.
He put his latest sketchbook away and brought out the one from last year.
"So if this is from last year why do you keep it with you?" She asked.
"Inspiration. If I get artist block I'll look at my earlier designs and try to improve them."
"That's really cool." She said pointing to his sketch of a dragon.
"Thanks that's actually one of my favorites. It's okay but It's a good start."
"A good start! Hiccup this is awesome! God you're one of those people who says I draw a little and then can draw like an exact replica of the Mona Lisa if he wanted to."
"Eh I'm not really good with drawing people my style is too cartoony."
"Well I like it." She said.
Then it started. Their friendship began. He would sometimes teach her how to draw things and she would tell him about sports or music. They both liked radiohead.
"Oh come on Just is one of the best songs of that album." Hiccup said.
"It is but I'm just saying Karma Police is better."
"Agree to disagree." Hiccup said.
"Hey I was wondering do you wanna hang out sometime like I don't know go bowling?" Merida asked.
"Sure! I mean yeah cool uh what time.?"
"How about Saturday at 2 sound okay?"
"Yeah that does." Hiccup said.
*bell rings*
"Come on we're going to miss the only edible food in the lunch line." She smiled.
Hiccup was on top of the world as he stood behind Merida in the lunch line. He was going to hang out with Merida DunBroch outside of school. He texted Jack the good news and got back a "wait to go man!"
He then felt a big push on his shoulder. Causing him to stumble a bit.
"Do you mind?" MacIntosh said.
"Uh excuse me you're the one who pushed me."
"Ian quit it." Merida said.
"Listen I don't really like this whole buddy system of you two. What? Is he doing your homework for you or something?"
"No he's a nice guy and I happen to like spending time with him."
"Oh really you like spending time with him more than me I see. Why don't you date him instead of me then."
"God Ian we broke up last semester get over yourself! Just leave him alone."
"God, Merida what the hell happened to you! Ever since you-"
"Ian don't you dare say another dam word or I swear I will never talk to you again." Merida said her eyes narrowing at Ian.
"Fine, tell me when you go back to yourself."
"Same to you." Merida said.
"I'm so sorry he's usually not like this, ever since we broke up he's been all moody and weird."
"It's fine......but what was the ever since you......you know what it's fine I don't need to know." Hiccup said.
"Thank you. Once we get to know each other better I'll tell you okay?"
"Okay. But you don't have to if you don't want to."
"Thank you Hiccup." She said.
A paper fell from Hiccup's notebook.
"Oh hey you dropped something." Merida said reaching down and picking up the paper.
"Oh no wait!"
Merida looked at the loose paper. There was a drawing of her. It wasn't like his usuals in dark ink. It was in regular pencil. But it still looked great. He was right he did draw cartoony but it was good cartoony. Her curls were all over the place and her eyes had a determined look.
She glanced up at Hiccup who looked like he was about die of embarrassment,
"I can explain.....it's just a rough draft and ...I just...thought you would be uh interesting to draw and uh....I really don't have any explanation I'm just a weird invisible kid who thinks your really cool and....pretty and I just had to draw you.." Hiccup stammered. "Please say something so I don't feel like a creep."
"I like it." She said.
"What?"
"I like it you made me look good." She smiled
"That's not really hard to do." He replied.
"Are their anymore?" Merida asked giving him back the paper.
"Uh nope nope not at all that would be weird." Hiccup said clutching his notebook closely.
"Hiccup......"
"Okay there might be a few more..I promise I'm not a creep."
Merida laughed "trust me Hiccup you're a lot of things but a creep is not one of them."
"I'm not that many things...."
"Sure you are...you're nice, smart, funny, and.....cute."
"You make me sound like a childhood stuffed animal."
"Are you saying you wouldn't want to hang out on my bed?" She smiled wickedly
She knew that would make him fluster a bit and it did.
"Are we still on for bowling?" Merida asked.
"Uh yes definitely." Hiccup said.
"Would you like to sit with me at lunch?" She asked.
"Uhm I would but I don't think I want to sit between Ian and Ronnie." He said.
"There off campus anyway blowing steam probably. Come on I'll introduce you."
"Alright can Jack come though?"
"Jack Frost? He's already over there." She pointed to her group.
There and behold was his best friend Jack sitting with Rapunzel Corona who had been left unattended by Ian and Ronnie.
"Wow he works fast." Hiccup said.
"Nah she's been complaining half the year about waiting for Jack to talk to her. So apparently it's not fast enough." Merida said.
"By the way Hiccup. Tell me when you want to draw me. I'd be happy to model for you." She said and kissed his cheek. She walked away looking and feeling satisfied with herself..
While Hiccup stood there for a couple of seconds just watching her go to the table still frozen in place wondering if this was a dream.
He sat down at the table and finally began living his dream. He made himself visible.
