Thank You
THANKS TO KAHYCEEBOOKLOVER FOR THE IDEA!!!
Authors note: so I didn't feel right marrying them off when they hated each other because let's be honest neither of them would let that happen so I changed it up a bit hope you don't mind!!
"No mum! I am not going to marry yet we have talked about this!" Merida yelled at her mother.
"Merida you're nineteen now, the law states that you should have been married by the time your eighteen! All the other lords are already married!" Elinor said to her daughter.
"I don't care what the law states! I'm not getting married. Especially to a Viking." She said.
"Merida, this alliance could be very good for us and the chief's son is a very nice lad. He has his own dragon."
"Why doesn't he just marry his dragon then?"
"Merida, this is final, you're not sixteen anymore. You have to think of your kingdom and grow up!" Elinor said. "Maudie will help you get ready." She said and left the room.
"Can you believe this Maudie? She's doing it again. I thought we settled this."
"You mother knows what's best for you princess." Maudie replied looking through the wardrobe.
"If she knew what was best for me she wouldn't be marrying me off to some barbarians." Merida replied.
"Now your mother has given you plenty of freedom. It's not her fault that you only want to talk to me or Angus and ride around shooting arrows. You didn't even try to meet new people so this is the price." Maudie said pulling out a magenta gown with dark lace sleeves
"I'm not as good as making impressions as my mother." Merida replied
"Oh sweetie you make impressions all right."
"Oh you know what I mean, I've never been good at making friends." Merida said.
"Well here's your chance to make friend's with the chief's son." Maudie said putting the gown over Merida's head.
Meanwhile.....
"Dad do I really have to?" Hiccup asked his father.
"Of course son you're already 20 and still have no wife. You need to start thinking of the future of the village . If you don't have an heir then Snotlout's next in line and Odin no on wants to see that happen." Stoick said,
"What if she hates me?"
"What's to hate? You're a good looking lad and your the first man ever to train a dragon." Stoick said "Girls in the village seem to take notice why shouldn't some highlander?"
"I have no idea what you're talking about but dad...I'm just not ready to get married. I want to travel the world." Hiccup said.
"Ay and you can do that after you marry Princess Merida."
"But dad..."
"Not buts Hiccup, as a chief you are doing what is best for the village. Who knows you may even like each other."
.....
"Merida! Their here!" Elinor said. "Isn't it exciting."
"Yes mother I'm just shaking with anticipation." Merida said sarcastically.
"Now remember good posture and don't forget to smile and curtsy." Elinor said.
"Announcing Chief Stoick the Vast and his son Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third!"
Merida noticed the big Viking man right away. He was just a bit bigger than her own father. His beard was much longer. He had a very stern face but smiled in our presence, his son was of a slim build. He had some type of unusual armor on of greens and browns. His hair was a little disheveled from the wind.
Hiccup took a look at the Princess of Scotland. She was pretty with blue eyes and fair skin. But the first thing he noticed was her long curly fiery mane of hair. He had never seen so many curls! She looked quite well......bored actually.
"Your highness it is an honor." Stoick bowed and Hiccup did the same.
"Welcome to our home!" Elinor announced "Merida will give Sir Hiccup a tour of the grounds."
"I will n-"
"Of course you will!" The queen interjected giving Merida a look.
"Fine, come Hiccup I'll give ye the grand tour." Merida said.
"Thank you." Hiccup said
Merida led him down the hall.
"So whats it like living in a castle?" Hiccup asked.
Just as they were out of view she pinned him to the wall and covered his mouth with her hand.
"Okay listen Dragon rider and you listen good. I am not going to get married. I'm sorry I have to do this to you, you seem generally alright but there is no way this is happening got it."
Hiccup nodded.
"Good." She let him go.
"What the hell was that for! You could've just told me instead of go all assassin on me." He said.
"Well it got my point across." She replied.
"Well like it or not you and I are going to be married. Trust me I'm not anymore happy then you are in this situation but I'm doing what's best for my tribe so the least we could do is become sort of friends or at least not hate each other." Hiccup said.
"No because it's not going to happen and I prefer you not to get attached," she replied.
"Attached?! To you? You're crazy!!" He said
"Good I'm glad we understand each other."
"I understand you're a stubborn woman who acts like a child when she doesn't get her way,"
"Excuse me?!" She glared
"You heard me." Hiccup said.
"Listen I don't want to be married and if that makes me childish then so be it."
"Oh no that's not what makes you childish. Do you really think a twenty year old dragon rider wants to be married right now! To a stranger he just met who is already driving him insane! Princess I have dreams too but I do what's best for my tribe that's what makes me grown up that's the difference between me and you." Hiccup said "at least I tried to be polite." Storming off to his room.
"Where is my room?!" He asked
Merida pointed to the third door on the left.
"Thank you." He said and stormed into his room.
Merida was shocked. No one had ever confronted her like that before not her father, nor Maudie, not even her mother. Merida went into her room and locked the door.
Oh god what had he done. He had just ruined any chance of him and the Princess at the very least becoming friends. He couldn't believe he talked to her like that! He had never spoken like that to anyone, but she just brought it out. It was her fault. He had been a perfect gentlemen and she just didn't even give him a chance. Now she had brought the worst in him.
Neither had left their rooms when dinner was announced. They finally went out of their rooms and sat at the table. Unfortunately they had to sit next to each other at the dinner table.
"So how was the tour Hiccup?" Elinor asked.
Merida waited for Hiccup to let her have it. Tell her mother of how rude Merida was, but he didn't.
"Uh..it was very interesting your highness." He replied.
"Ah wonderful!" Elinor said and went on to talking to Stoick.
"What's the deal?" Merida whispered.
"What?!" Hiccup whispered back.
"Why didn't you tell on me."
"Because even though you were initially insane, I realized you weren't the only one at fault. Just take it as an apology for the words that were said earlier." He whispered.
A few moments passed and she whispered "thank you."
They are in silence next to each other as their parents were blabbering on about finances and supplies.
The next few weeks Merida decided to at least be nice to Hiccup. She asked him questions at dinner. He'd tell her stories of his past with his friends.
The two actually became decent friends.
"You turned your mother into a bear?" Hiccup asked.
"Yup." Merida said biting into an apple."
"Just so you wouldn't have to marry?"
"Well the witch said it would change her mind but I didn't know it would change her into a bear! But yes."
"God I guess I was lucky just to get away with getting pushed into a wall." He chuckled taking a bite of his apple.
"Who says you got away? Who knows what's in that apple." Merida said.
Hiccup looked a little uneasy as he stared down at his apple.
"You didn't!"
"Your right I didn't I just wanted to see the shock on your face haha." She laughed
"Thank you for scaring the living day lights out of me!" He tossed his apple in her direction.
"Hey! You can't throw food at a Primcess."
"Who says?" He smirked.
Months passed and Hiccup and Merida became even closer which scared Merida. In the passed she had said she didn't want him getting attached to her but now the tables had turn.
"Do you want to go flying?" He'd ask.
"No thank you Hiccup, I have princess lessons today."
"Oh come on you've skipped them before."
"Yes but, I need to go this time." She replied.
She had decided this was for his own good and hers. She was not ready for marriage and when her mother would finally stop with all this nonsense he would fly back to Berk and she wouldn't see him again. It was better this way.
She was ignoring him. He was certain of this. He'd only known Merida for about 4 months but he knew she hated Princess lessons. She'd take any opportunity to leave them. Did he do something wrong? Maybe she grew bored of him? That thought weighed heavy on him. Was he just not interesting as he used to be?
Merida had lasted about a week without hanging out with Hiccup besides dinner. It was killing her, every time they would sit for dinner she'd feel him look at her in confusion and hope. Then he would turn sadly back to his meal. It was getting too difficult to handle. So one night she just didn't come down for dinner.
"Your majesty if I may have a talk with the princess maybe I can get her down for supper." Hiccup asked.
"Well alright but don't be surprised if she doesn't. She's a lovely daughter but she can be stubborn."
"Just like her mother." Fergus said and Elinor gave him a look.
"Oh I was just teasing." He replied.
Hiccup knocked on the door.
"Mer? Its me Hiccup, could you please come down to dinner?" he asked
"No thank you." She replied through the door.
How was he supposed to get her to come down? He was the reason she didn't want to come down. She finally couldn't stand to be in the same room with him.
"Great Hiccup, you made her hate you? Now she won't even come down to eat just to avoid you. Thor I'm so stupid." He sat in front of the door.
"You know I really liked you. You were right I'm the one who got attached. You win. I...I started falling in love with you... but I should've known better. A girl who doesn't want to ever marry I should've known. You even warned me.. How could a girl like you love someone like me?"
"I do!" Merida squeaked out from behind the door in tears.
She opened the door. Hiccup to see her in tears. Eyes red and cheeks flushed.
"I do. I do love you and don't you ever talk like that again! Don't you know you're one of the best people I know! You laugh at my jokes you make me feel better about myself and you tell me when I'm being a complete arse." She said. "And I know what I said in the past but I got attached too alright! That's why I have been avoiding you! Because I'm not ready to get married but I love you and I know the only ways out are to be married when I'm not ready or for you to leave and I don't want either to happen. But don't you ever say you're not good enough for me! Don't you ever! You're are the best person for me."
He hugged her in his arms.
"I'm sorry..." He said.
"I am too...it's my fault anyway." She said wiping away her tears.
"Hey we don't have to get married right away. You know I'm not ready either." He said.
"I know....but our parents..."
"Will be thrilled to find out that we love each other but want to wait a little while till we marry."
"Really?" She asked.
"Really."
She stood on the tips of her feet and pulled his collar down and kissed him softly on the lips. He kissed back with the same soft nervous touch as his hand stroked through her hair as the other found it's way to her waist.
They parted and he held her.
"Thank you." She said.
"For what?" He asked.
"For getting attached." She said.
