Princess of Thieves Part 2
BANG BANG
Loud thunderous noises was all Merida heard the next morning. She looked up groggily and saw a blonde girl her age banging on some pots and pans.
"Wake up sunshine time to get to work!" The girl yelled.
"Who are you? And will you stop that annoying racket it's barely even dawn." Merida complained and hid under her blanket.
"I am Astrid your supervisor and worse nightmare. Now let's get going you have a lot of dragon poop to shovel and we want it gone before the sun comes out." Astrid yelled.
"I thought I was only cleaning at night!" Merida asked angrily.
"Well we lied now let's get up!"
Merida got up slowly and was ushered outside by Astrid. Merida began shoveling as Astrid watched her. After about half an hour Astrid had gotten bored of the new prisoner.
"You're kind of boring you know that?" Astrid said.
"I'm sorry I don't follow your interests but as you can see I'm shoveling dragon crap." Merida retorted.
"Yeah well Hiccup kind of made you sound interesting. I mean you are known as the Princess of Thieves! How cool is that? But now I feel like I have gotten my hopes to high." She said.
"I would tell you robbery stories but I don't think that would help my sentence." Merida replied sticking her shovel into the ground. She began stretching out her back and arms.
"Oh please tell me. I promise I won't tell Hiccup." Astrid said.
"Why should I trust you?"
Astrid wasn't sure how to answer the question at first. But the answer popped into her mind like a bubble.
"Because you hit my friend with a rock and I haven't tried to kill you yet." She replied.
Merida was surprised to hear the answer. It was true she had assaulted him. She could tell this girl was loyal to Hiccup. She wondered if they were more than friends or at least if they wanted to be. Nah seeing Astrid was very direct, if she wanted to be more she would've told him.
"Actually it was a medallion." She replied.
"Still does the damage." Astrid retorted
"I'll tell you if you shovel the rest of this," Merida challenged her.
"You wouldn't be learning character then." She replied. "I'll just hear them from Hiccup when he comes here for his shift."
"What makes you think I'll tell him?" Merida asked picking up the shovel and going back to work.
"Because everyone tells Hiccup everything. Just look at him he has one of those trustworthy looking faces. Plus he won't tell his father, he's pretty good at keeping secrets well except to me. I usually know what he is hiding before he even thinks of hiding it. I'm the one who discovered he had Toothless. Nothing gets passed me." She said
"Are you two an item if you don't mind me asking."
"Why you interested?"
Merida made a face "Of course not."
"I wouldn't be surprised. Remember nothing passes by me but anyway to answer your question....No his father wishes. Hiccup and I are just too good of friends. He's also too nice. A lot nicer than I am." Astrid said.
"Fair enough." Merida said. Shoveling the last part of the mess. "There all done."
"Perfect I'll escort you back to your cell and feed the dragons and I'll call you back in about three hours."
Merida made a heavy sigh. This was her life for however long she was going to be kept here.
Merida rested in her cell until the third hour passed. She was expecting Astrid but instead Hiccup was there.
"Ready for your Mid morning shift?" He asked.
"It's only mid morning?" She asked.
"Yep you still have four more shifts." He replied unlocking her cell.
"That chopping block is sounding more and more inviting." She said walking with him.
"I heard Astrid gave you a waking call." He said.
"Yes she did. If you don't mind I'd rather have you in the mornings." She said getting to work once again.
"I am sorry to dissappoint but she will be waking you up everyday. Since I have prior business," He said
"What prior business could you have before dawn."
"Well I actually like to sleep." He replied.
"Now you're just rubbing it in." She said.
"Maybe just a little. So what did you and Astrid talk about?"
"Not much she said you made me sound exciting and apparently I didn't match up to her expectations."
"Well Astrid does like adventure and a life as a thief sounds like nothing but adventure." He said
"I wasn't always a thief. It's not like I hurt people that don't deserve it......well except you." MErida said think about it.
"Guess that makes me special." He commented sitting down on one of the stables. "I would ask you about before you were a thief but I feel you might hit me with your shovel."
'You're very smart." She said with sass.
"Hmmm but you could tell me of one of your adventures?" He asked.
"I could but I won't." Merida replied.
"Why not?"
"Because I have work to do. As you can see."
"Please I won't tell Astrid you told me."
"You and Astrid are a lot of like in someways you're both persistant and irritating." She said.
"I'll take one of your shoveling shifts." He said
"Well you're much easier to barter with than Astrid." She said handing him the shovel.
"Now which one would you like to hear? Battling with witches? Traveling with the infamous Robin Hood? Or being taken by trolls?"
Hiccup ceased his shoveling and stared at her in awe "you were taken by trolls?!" He asked excitedly.
"Really out of all those things you're interested about the trolls."
"Yes when I was little I used to hunt for them! Do they really take left socks."
"Aye they do. They have underground caves filled with them. They use them for sleeping bags."
"Now you're just fooling with me."
"I am not look" she said rolling up her sleeve revealing a scar that looked like tiny teeth marks. "That's where a troll bit me." She said.
"You were bitten by a troll?"
"Yes see apparently I had fallen asleep in one of their lands and they picked me up while I was sleeping and I woke up in the middle of it and put up quite a fight. It turns out they were pretty lovely creatures when you aren't being captured by them." She said.
"Wow that's amazing!" Hiccup said "were they anywhere near here?"
"Hmmmm I can't quite remember. It was so long ago I think it was more near Norway."
"That's a day's journey!" Hiccup said excitedly.
"Hiiiccuup!" Astrid called for her friend. "You're not supposed to be making small talk with the prisoner and most importantly you shouldn't be doing her job."
"Hey from what I heard you two had your own small talk." Hiccup said.
"Yes but I still kept my wits about me. Hell she didn't even tell me anything."
"She told me."
"Of course she did."
"I'm right here!" Merida added.
"Well it looks like it's back to your cell then since Hiccup has done most of your work for you. We'll come and get you after lunch." Astrid said
"Both of you?" She asked.
"Yep double the trouble." Astrid said.
They escorted Merida back to her cell. An hour later Hiccup had come back to her cell.
"So tell me about these trolls." Hiccup asked.
Merida decided to tell him about the trolls. Astrid was right he did have a trustworthy sense to him. Plus he had done most of her work and genuinely seemed interested in trolls. She told them about their weird traditions and how they were rock-like. She also told him about the fire crystals. Merida was given one after her journey she tried to keep it as long as she could but she ended up dropping it somewhere on the way to raid a royal campsite.
After she was done Astrid came in and told her it was time for her shift. The three of them actually had a decent conversation together and Merida did all her work.
