Monster Hunter part 2
The sun was at its highest peak as Merida, Hiccup, and Toothless made their way to Niflheim Bay. The waters were calm as their ship cut through it like a knife in butter.
Merida was up in the crow's nest with Hiccup as Toothless sun bathed on the deck.
"You see that big grey blot over there?" Merida pointed to the sea's horizon. It's dark grey mass stood out in the otherwise spotless blue sky.
"That's Niflheim Bay,"
"I can see how you had trouble finding us," Hiccup said. "How did you end up in this field of work anyway?"
The woman leaned back against the wall of the crow's nest, "My parents were killed by a monster when I was a girl, a demonic bear of some kind,"
"I'm sorry,"
"Don't be, I don't remember it, I was too young. This little old witch took me in saying I was her responsibility. She taught me to hunt monsters so it wouldn't happen again,"
"Isn't a witch technically a monster?"
"Well she did create some of them, said she was trying to teach the humans a lesson, but it got too out of hand she said. That's why she had me to fix her mistakes and avenge my family, and help others who were plagued by them," she explained.
"Did she create the demon bear?" He asked.
"She did, she felt awful about it, but she did her best raising me, trying to work off her guilt, I don't hold anything against her. She didn't know how it would play out," she replied.
Merida avoided the sympathetic stare Hiccup was trying to offer. She didn't like to being felt sorry for. She took out her knife and began sharpening it to keep distracted.
"So how'd you and the lizard end up together?"
Toothless' tail whipped the side of the post of the crow's nest with a big thud. Shaking their structure entirely. Merida nearly dropped her knife, "Sorry, alright jeez, someone can't take a joke?" She yelled at the reptile who had gone back into his sun bathing position.
"Yeah we've been together for a pretty long time. I shot him down and took that part of his tail,"
She looked surprise "so you were a hunter as well?"
"Well sort of, my town was pillaged with dragons but that was before I learned they could be trained. Toothless and I here built a trusting friendship and I lost my limb soon after he did as well," Hiccup pointed to his metal leg.
Merida looked down examining Hiccup's artificial limb. She looked up at him "Did he eat it?"
Hiccup laughed "No, no, he caught me during an explosion, unfortunately my leg wasn't protected,"
The sky had begun to grow dark, and not because of the time of day. They were entering the brink of the foggy mist.
"Wow so have these guys ever seen the sun?" Hiccup questioned,
Merida chuckled, "Not often, apparently during the summer solstice the fog calms and slowly disappears, its a national holiday,"
"What do they call it? Let me guess Sun Day?" He joked,
"Actually, yes, the town has a sense of humor about it," she said.
The ship pulled into the docks of Niflheim Bay. Toothless was ushered below the deck to not create a commotion.
"I'm sorry bud, it's just for a little bit," Hiccup said. The reptile pouted laying his head on the floor waiting for his owner to return.
"It's for his safety," Merida said.
They were greeted by a round woman on the pier. She wore her hair tucked away in a bonnet. "Merida! You've returned! Did you slay the fog monster? Where is it? What was it? Who is he?"
"Maudie Maudie, I just got off the ship, this is Hiccup he is chief of an island called Berk. I need to take him to the council,"
"Council! Don't you mean your chief?"
"We're a representative democracy dear," Maudie said "Haven't had a chief in about 50 years or so,"
"Maudie can you please take us to the town hall please?" Merida asked again,
The group of three began strolling the town. Hiccup noticed there were little pools of water practically everywhere. "I guess you guys haven't had a straight in sometime?" Hiccup joked,
"We never have, dear," Maudie replied,
They stopped at the biggest building in the town. It look a lot like the Great hall back in Berk. It had an iron fighting sword fish right above the door showing the town's pride in their mascot.
"There you are! Let me know how it goes," Maudie said wandering off.
"Okay we're here, do you have a plan?" Merida asked,
"Yes, well sort of," Hiccup stated, "I'm just going to apologize and make an offer,"
"Better be a damn good offer," Merida noticed the nervous look on Hiccup's face "I'm sure you'll do fine," she reassured him.
Hiccup and Merida walked into the town hall. The council consisted of 5 members all varying in ages. In the center was a big old man that looked like he could be Stoick's father in a past life. He had a great white beard and stood nearly 8 feet tall. He looked even bigger when compared to the little blonde haired man and the slim colorful young lady sitting on either side of him. On the very end was a middle aged man who had a very stern gaze and on the other a young man who looked to be the same age as Hiccup yet had striking white hair.
"State your name and purpose," the stern grey hair man said,
"Hiccup Horrendous Haddock The Third, Chief of Berk. My purpose, an apology and compromise," Hiccup said,
"What do you have to apologize for Chief of Berk?" The woman asked,
"I'm afraid my...animal companion has been causing your town distress, you see he is allergic to the flowers here on your island and while we were flying overhead..."
"Flying?" The young white haired man asked,
"Yes we were flying overhead and he sneezed causing flames to uh come down upon your town,"
"What kind of animal could do that?"
"A dragon sir, my island is known for training dragons. I'm deeply sorry for this situation,"
"Situation?" The stern man known as Aster interrupted. "Your pet dragon has burned nearly two fields of our crops, frightened our town, and you expect us just to forgive because it was allergy season?"
"Oi listen to what he has to say," Merida added, "You haven't let him finish,"
"You were supposed to rid our town of this beast, isn't that your job?"
Anger and heat rose into Merida's face "I know how to do my job, if I had been alone I would've. But I ran into him and he convinced me. You know how hard yet is to change my mine so I suggest you give him a listen." Merida said, "And if you ever, tell me how to do my job again, I swear I'll-"
"That's enough Merida, continue Hiccup," North said,
"I am prepared to replace the amount of crops you lost with ours from Berk, and with each kind of food you will receive a pound of coal as well for your fires. All we ask for in return is for you to harvest some of the flowers that grow on your fields so the scent does not overwhelm our dragons when we pass by.
"I think that sounds like a compromise," North said. "All those in favor state ay"
"Ay" four of them said,
"Aster?" North asked,
"Fine, ay," Aster grumbled,
Hiccup smiled and thanked the council for their time. Council member Jack Frost had asked to see the dragons sometime and Hiccup was happy to oblige.
"Not so bad Chief Hiccup," Merida joked. They were back on the ship sailing further away from the bay. They had to release Toothless somewhere he wouldn't have allergies. He had already burnt a hole through to the upper deck.
"Thanks for standing up for me in there," he replied,
"Eh when you're a woman in this line of work you get used to it,"
"Also I'll fix that deck for you once we're in Berk. We're pretty good at making ships," Hiccup boasted with pride. "So where are you off to now?"
"Well, depends where the next job is. I'll make sure to write you a letter if anything dragon related comes up, I've learned my lesson," she smiled.
"Or you know you could always write me a letter for something not dragon related if you want to say hi," he offered
"A monster hunter and a dragon tamer? I think we might disagree on a lot," Merida replied,
"Yeah but we could learn from each other, and hear about different adventures and creatures! Think about it,"
"Fine, I'll think about it," Merida grinned,
"Also just for the record, Monster Tamer sounds waaaay cooler than Monster Hunter." Hiccup added,
Merida laughed "I admit it does sound pretty cool,"
