Love at First Punch
Authors note: Rapunzel's ex is a random character I made up because I didn't want to make Flynn or Jack her ex lol just wanted to put that out there
Hiccup and his squire Cyrus walked into the Dunbroch's Holiday ball. Hiccup wore his traditional wolf fur cape and Cyrus was wearing the black cloak he would always wear for special occasions. Hiccup hadn't really wanted to come, but as Chief of Berk he was required to make an appearance to satisfy the treaty between Scotland and Berk. Cyrus was a good squire but he was a very serious fellow. He was devoted to Hiccup though, he always focused on his job as a squire to serve and help his chief. However this required breaking the heart of the lovely hand maiden Rapunzel who was best friends with the Princess of Scotland. Cyrus and Rapunzel had begun courting, but he broke it off with her stating his job was more important.
Hiccup walked around the ballroom with Cyrus at his side at all times.
"Do you think if we say hi to the princess or the king we can leave?" Hiccup asked his squire.
"Of course Chief, maybe stay a little longer after that to be courteous but then we should be able to leave," Cyrus replied hoping to leave without running into Rapunzel.
"Haaaaaappppy Hooooolidays!!!" a voice shouted across the room.
The two young men turned around to see the old duke of Denmark being a bit too tipsy. His big chubby face was rosy and red. He walked over to them stumbling on the way there.
"The ol' duke has done it again." Hiccup nudged his squire humorously.
"Well look who it is? It's Hiccup! Chief of Berk! My boy I knew you when you were a baby sucking on your thumb!" The jolly drunk duke exclaimed holding a drink in his hand.
"Nice to see you too Duke," Hiccup chuckled.
The big old man tipped over just a bit too much causing his drink to dribble on the neck of Hiccup's cape.
Hiccup jumped from the coldness of the drink starting to touch the back of his neck.
Cyrus guided the duke quickly off of him and repeatedly asked Hiccup if he was alright.
"It's fine Cyrus just a little champagne, much easier to wash out then dragon saliva." Hiccup said taking off his cape.
"Here sir I insist you take mine." Cyrus said giving him his black cloak.
"You don't have to that Cyrus." Hiccup replied.
"No I insist!" Cyrus exclaimed.
"You're a good squire Cyrus," Hiccup smiled and put the dark cloak on.
"Thank you sir." Cyrus replied.
Meanwhile....
"Why are you crying Rapunzel?" Princess Merida asked her hand maiden Rapunzel in the hallway of the corridor.
"Cyrus is here..." She cried.
"You mean the squire who broke up with you?" Merida asked.
"Yes!" Rapunzel yelled.
"Sorry, just wanted to make sure... Oh Rapunzel I didn't know you were so worked up about this, I would've asked my parents not to invite the chief of Berk here."
"It's too late for that." Rapunzel cried. "He told me his job was more important than our relationship. Then Mavis heard that he's courting a girl back from Berk!"
"Alright where is he? What does he look like?"
Rapunzel looked up with teary eyes "What are you going to do?"
"Just tell me what he looks like or what he's wearing."
"He's tall and has brown hair and wearing a black cloak with white embroidery on the edges." Rapunzel said.
"I'll be back." Merida said. "I'm going to give him a piece of my mind."
Before Rapunzel could stop her Merida was walking back into the ballroom looking for this jerk named Cyrus. She had never met Cyrus or the chief he served but she knew she could find him.
She saw a tall brown haired man from across the way. He wore exactly what Rapunzel had described. Next to him must've been his chief but the chief of Berk was not wearing that extravagant clothing. Maybe it was a Viking thing but Merida didn't care. She stomped right over to his squire, she was just so angry that someone could treat sweet innocent Rapunzel with such carelessness that she let her instincts take over. She punched him square in the face in front of everyone.
The squire fell with a thud as everyone gasped in shock.
The "chief" yelled "Chief are you alright as he helped him up.
"Chief?" Merida questioned,
"Yes! He's the chief of Berk! You just punched the chief of Berk!" The man yelled.
"It's okay Cyrus, I'm fine it's just a black eye."
Merida was confused. "Wait so you're Cyrus?" She asked the man with no cloak.
"Yes!"
"Oh I'm sorry I meant to punch your squire not you." Merida explained to Hiccup.
"Why on earth would you do that?" Hiccup asked still trying to focus.
"He hurt my best friend... I'm really sorry here let me get you something for your eye." She said.
Cyrus was about to protest until Hiccup stopped him.
"Cyrus let me go I'll be fine it's just a misunderstanding."
Hiccup walked with Merida to the kitchen and Merida requested a sliver of steak.
Hiccup sat down on a stool as Merida pressed the steak to his injured eye. He flinched from pain and from the chill of the meat.
"Again extremely sorry." She said.
"It's alright you were defending your friend." He replied. "Plus you got me out of a very boring conversation with Lord Dingwall."
"Oh yes Dingwall is an interesting specimen, not a man of many words." She said.
"Yes, I noticed whenever he talks he has this glassy look in his eye. It's like he's hypnotized whenever he has to reply to something." Hiccup commented.
"Maybe a witch put a spell on him."
"Or a troll." Hiccup replied.
"Trolls? Trolls aren't magical." Merida stated.
"Yes they are in some parts of the world maybe not here." Hiccup said.
"I'm Merida by the way."
"Oh so this is your home! I apologize for not knowing your custom is to punch your guests in the face." He joked.
"Again I apologize." She said.
"Oh lighten up, from the way you shoot I consider myself lucky it wasn't an arrow." He replied.
"You know how I shoot?"
"No but I've heard from enough people never to make you angry when you have a bow and an arrow with you... of course your fist did a pretty decent job." Hiccup said.
"Thanks, I hope this won't ruin our treaty." She said.
Hiccup smiled "It won't if you honor me a visit in Berk."
Merida smiled back "I think I could manage that, but watch out for your squire."
"He's a good squire, it was hard for him to break it off with Rapunzel but he knew he wasn't being fair to her if he kept courting her. He's too dedicated to his job." Hiccup said.
"I guess your right, it wouldn't be fair, but Rapunzel was really heartbroken."
"She probably was, but at least now she can move on instead of being in a half hearted relationship."
"You're a smart man Chief Hiccup of Berk." Merida said.
"You have a good punch Princess Merida of Scotland,"
