Dance with Me
Author's note: Haha bet you're surprised to see an update. Hope you all enjoy it.
"That was your favorite memory? Me falling on my butt in front of hundreds of our friends and family!" Jack exclaimed as his friend's snickered around him.
Jack and his wife Rapunzel were hosting their annual Christmas party with their best friends Merida and Hiccup Haddock. They sat in the living room surrounded by hot coco and Christmas decorations. The Christmas tree was the brightest thing in the room next to Rapunzel's smile as she laughed at her husband's reaction to her favorite memory. It was a tradition in Rapunzel's family to go around and talk about their favorite memory of the year. Jack and Rapunzel had just gotten married earlier in the year and she had just explained how her favorite memory was when Jack had missed a step coming off of the altar and had fallen flat on his butt in front of everyone.
"Not oh when Jack professed his love for me in his vows, or having our first dance, no it was me embarrassing myself," Jack continued to ramble on.
"Oh come on Jack it was pretty funny," Merida replied
"Yeah, I thought I was going to do the same thing," Hiccup said lifting the arm with a cast,
Hiccup was known as the clumsy one of the group. He wasn't really that clumsy, but he did have a habit of getting injured a lot. Last week he had broken his arm after falling off the ladder when putting up Christmas lights. Merida had told him to wait for her to come out and help, but Hiccup was too excited to wait.
"To be honest I thought so too," Merida joked giving her husband an elbow nudge.
"Okay your turn Merida what was your favorite memory of this year?" Rapunzel asked.
Merida smiled thinking of all the good memories she had made this year. One stood out like a sore thumb among the others though.
"Oh I know what my favorite was, it happened just earlier this month," Merida smiled.
*******************Merida's Memory***********************
Merida sighed sadly as she drove by the downtown square. What once was her favorite childhood place to go during the holidays had now become an empty shadow. The downtown square of her small town used to contain lights and decorations that were put up by the town's local baker Angus. However, Angus had decided to move when he retired and the block's other shops began to dwindle as well. Small business began disappearing and were now replaced with vacant buildings that had become to expensive to rent. She knew it would never be like the town square she had remembered all those years ago. The whole town would come for the lighting ceremony and the local high school's jazz choir would sing Christmas music and people would dance in the square. It was her favorite family tradition and now it was gone.
She parked her car in her driveway and smiled as she saw the decorations out on her lawn. All that was left to do was to hang the lights. At least her house would be decorated and have the Christmas spirit she thought.
Merida walked up the steps carrying too many shopping bags to count, she fumbled with her keys and unlocked her front door.
"SHIELD YOUR EYES!" her husband yelled as he closed the door on her making two of her bags fall.
"Dammit Hiccup you're not done yet?" She complained as she picked up the bags that had dropped,
Hiccup went around and popped his head out of the front window.
"Sorry! No it's just Toothless keeps ripping up the wrapping paper," he said talking about the couple's mischievous black cat.
"Well I have a lot in my hands and I need to put them in our room so I can start wrapping some of them," she explained.
"Okay okay fine, I'll cover them with a blanket, give me ten seconds,"
She rolled her eyes and smiled trying not to imagine the mess Toothless and him had made in their living room.
Hiccup opened the front door and helped Merida with the bags.
"Don't look inside of them, there is some stuff for you too," she said setting her stack on the table.
The living room was a mess as she expected. A big plaid blanket was over a stack of presents making it look like a fort some child had made. Toothless was asleep on the couch tired from playing with wrapping paper and string all day.
"I'm not helping you clean that up," Merida said annoyed.
"What's up with you?" Hiccup asked,
"Nothing it's just I'm tired and the house is a mess!" she argued,
"Well I'm sorry, I'll have it cleaned up by tonight okay?" he said wrapping his arms around her.
She sighed, "I'm sorry, I'm just a little upset because of the town square being so empty, it's our first christmas without it."
"I know, but hey we'll have our own traditions here, like visiting Jack and Rapunzel's place,"
Merida smiled, "You're right, it's just it's a little hard for me to let go of it, but visiting Jack and Rapunzel's will be fun,"
"Okay you go rest and I'm going to go get the tree, Jack said he would help me chop it down and bring it in." Hiccup said,
"Sounds great and I promise I won't peek at what you're wrapping," she joked,
"Please don't!" Hiccup smiled and gave her a quick kiss goodbye. He went into his bedroom and got his winter jacket and his wallet and headed out the door to meet Jack downtown.
Jack waited in the downtown square for Hiccup to arrive. The blue beanie that Rapunzel had knitted him was just slightly too big but he liked it because it covered the tops of his ears and keep them warm. He looked at his phone for the time and realized he was about five minutes early. Jack sighed as he knew Hiccup was almost never on time to begin with, so Jack began to walk around the deserted town square.
Most of the old shops had taken their signs down when they left, but there were still a few that remained. Jack saw a faded blue sign with white lettering that said Angus' Bakery. Another sign was missing a letter so the sign read Hannon Used Bokstore. Jack had only lived in the town since beginning of high school. He remembered going to the bakery on Hiccup's Birthday with Merida to order a cake. The building was always warm no matter what season it was. It smelled of gingerbread and coffee all the time. Merida had gone up to the counter and was greeted like an old friend of the family when the owner saw her. Jack never really understood how that felt since he moved a lot when he was younger. His dad had finally made a point to stay in Burgess at least until Jack finished high school. Jack decided to stay in town and go to the local college to stay close to Rapunzel and his other friends. He had traveled enough when he was younger, he wanted a place he could really call home.
Hiccup parked his car in the parking lot of the square. He recognized a figure wearing a blue hat in front of the old bakery and knew it was his best friend.
"Remember when we used to come here after finals?" Hiccup asked standing next to Jack.
"Yeah, we had coffee and cookies whenever we got done with finals,"
"Even if we failed them," Hiccup joked,
"Hey that Calculus class was hard as hell and you know it," Jack defended
"Sure, but you might've done better if you had went to the class," Hiccup replied.
"Fine, now come on I thought we were setting up some christmas lights," Jack said.
*************************************************
"Rapunzel where are you taking me?" Merida huffed as she reached for her blindfold only to be swatted by Rapunzel's hand.
"You're going to ruin the Christmas surprise!!" Rapunzel replied.
Merida held Rapunzel's arm tightly as her feet began to slide on the icy road. "Are we at an ice rink?"
Rapunzel looked down and smiled as she saw that Merida was wearing her old sneakers that had absolutely no traction.
"No, you just need new shoes,"
"Hey I like these shoes," Merida defended.
Rapunzel rolled her eyes. "Okay we are here!"
"Can I take this thing off now?"
"Yes," Hiccup replied for Rapunzel.
"Hiccup? What are you.." Merida took off her blindfold and in front of her was the most beautiful sight she had ever seen.
The town square was lit up in christmas lights, the old shops signs were still old and tattered, but the lights over shined their dullness. Her ears filled with the intro to "White Christmas." as Jack turned on his old boombox. Merida saw her wonderful husband smiling at her holding a box of donuts.
"I know it's not Angus' donuts, or a jazz choir but I thought Doc's Donuts from down the street and Jack's boombox was a good substitute," Hiccup said.
"Hiccup... this is...this is wonderful," Merida said smiling softly.
"Well it's almost done, I believe you owe me a dance," he said.
Merida chuckled and walked towards her husband, his hand took hers and his other wrapped around her waist as they began to sway.
"Hey Rapunzel want to show them how it's done?" Jack joked.
******Present******
"I liked that memory too, that was a fun night," Hiccup said squeezing Merida's hand.
"Seriously made me have to step up my gift game," Jack said,
"You tried to fill the garage with lanterns and it almost caught on fire," Merida replied.
The group laughed as Rapunzel kissed her husband's cheek "It was the thought that counts,"
Rapunzel raised her cup "Here's to a new year filled with new favorite memories,"
They all clinked their glasses and cheered in anticipation of their future together.
Author's Note: So yeah maybe this will be a once a year kind of thing. Hopefully not, but I don't want to make any promises! Hope you enjoyed the drabble! Until next time!
