Chapter 5 - Shaking

The three skeletons all glowed green, hugging each other tightly. Gaster didn't feel as heartless as he once did. 2-P finally earned some affection after what seemed like years of trying. And 1-S saw them both happy. It seemed like ages before they let go of each other. Gaster smiled down at the two smaller skeletons, who were looking at their new clothes and at each other, both smiling. They didn't expect the ground to suddenly start shaking violently.

"Woah! W-what's happening??" 1-S stammered nervously, holding onto his brother's arm. 2-P fell over on him, winding up with both of them on the ground. Gaster helped them up, trying desperately to keep his footing, but slipped backwards and slammed the back of his head on the wall with a sickening crack. The impact shook and stung his whole body. "Ow..." he mumbled before passing out. 2-P nearly had a heart attack and 1-S quickly checked if Gaster was okay. "He's still alive, just unconscious like you were earlier," he said, worried.

2-P shook the tall skeleton by the shoulders. "Dr. Gaster? Wake up! You're going to get hurt! Please get up!" When he obviously didn't wake up, 2-P looked at his brother. 1-S could tell his plan by the look in his eyes, and nodded hesitantly. "Do it." 2-P also hesitated, but knew what he needed to do. He took a deep breath in and shouted "Doctor Alphys!!!"

Seconds later, the door whipped open and a short yellow lizard monster in a lab coat came in. She had glasses, buck teeth, and freckles on her snout. She looked concerned but confused at the same time. "W-who are you two?! What happened t-to Dr. Gaster?!" she exclaimed. 2-P and 1-S looked at her, concerned. 2-P ran forward and hastily pulled her over to the unconscious scientist. "We can explain later! He hit his head and now he won't wake up!"

Dr. Alphys nodded and hastily put her hands on Gaster's skull, which started to glow green. She fixed a bit of the large crack Gaster had in the back of his skull before she was tired out. "I-I can't heal him very well! C-can one of you t-try?" 2-P and 1-S looked at each other, linked their hands, and used their both of their healing magic at once. They made a much larger patch-up, but the crack still wasn't gone and he still wasn't conscious.

Alphys whipped out her phone and started punching numbers. "I-I'll call King Asgore!" The phone rang once. "Pickup, pickup, pickup, pickup..." Alphys said quickly. It rang twice. "Pleeeaaase..." she said to herself hopefully. The sound of a person picking up the phone could the heard on the other line. "Hello?" a male voice said. "Y-Your Majesty! I-I'm sorry to interrupt w-whatever you were doing, b-but D-Dr. Gaster has a crack in his skull, and he's u-unconscious! There are two l-little skeletons here with me. P-please hurry!"

Asgore sounded panicked. "I'll be right there! Make sure nothing falls on him and furthers the damage!" he said before hanging up. 2-P, being almost as tall as Alphys, ran around the room and kept things from falling over. 1-S made sure Gaster was still alive, and Alphys kept track of both of them. Soon, a goatlike monster with a beard, a crown, large horns and a royal cape came in.

"You must be Asgore. Nice meetin' ya," 1-S said, smiling nervously. Asgore smiled back. "Nice to meet you too. Is Gaster alright?!" 2-P ran up. "He helped us up after we fell over, then he slipped and bashed his head into the wall and now he won't wake up!" he said quickly. Asgore sat down against the wall and picked up Gaster, then looked at the large crack in his skull, wincing at how painful it looked. Alphys stepped forward. "W-we all tried to heal him, but he's not waking up," she said quietly.

The shaking died down, and the king tried to heal the scientist. More blood than expected ran down from the cracks in his head and soaked his clothes, making 2-P hide his eyes, shivering and whimpering. "Quite faint-hearted, aren't you, little one?" Asgore said, smiling, trying to make small talk while he healed Gaster. The shaking had stopped completely now.

2-P nodded. "I-I d-don't like seeing people hurt..." he explained shyly. Asgore smiled. "That makes two of us. Say, what are your names?" 1-S and 2-P looked at each other nervously, not having prepared a response for this question. "Um... Dr. Gaster just calls us 1-S and 2-P," 1-S explained, pointing at himself and his brother to clarify who was who. Asgore raised an eyebrow, but still smiled. "That's a bit odd, but I suppose if I can't trust Gaster, who can I trust?"

Alphys noticed the plate on 2-P's hand, and assumed that 1-S had the same thing. "W-why do you have metal plates on your hands? W-what do they say?" Alphys asked. The young skeletons froze, and 2-P quickly hid his hands behind his back. "W-what plates? Nyehehe... heh..." 2-P laughed nervously. Asgore was still trying to heal Gaster, but looked at the young skeletons with a concerned face. "If it's personal, we understand. But we just want to know where they came from." "W-We'll explain later..." 1-S stammered. Alphys nodded. "T-that's fair. A-anyway, how is he, Your Majesty?"

Asgore looked down at Gaster, who seemed to be slowly waking up. "Gaster? Are you feeling okay?" The king asked him. Gaster made a tired noise before slowly opening his eyes. "Wh... what happened while I was out...?" he said shakily. "According to these small skeletons, you hit your head on the wall when the ground started shaking and passed out," Asgore told him.

Gsster looked pretty embarrassed to be so close to him, trying to hide his blush from him with his hand (which didn't really work due to the hole in it), and tried to get up, but quickly sat back down against the wall. "Ow, ow ow ow ow ow..." he mumbled, holding his head. 1-S and 2-P ran up to him. "Are you okay?!" 2-P cried. Gaster looked up at the young skeleton's face, smiling shakily.

"Don't worry, 2-P, I'm fine..." he replied. "Thank you for healing him, King Asgore," 1-S said politely. "It's no problem. It's not the first time he's hurt himself," Asgore said, looking at the Royal Scientist with a curious expression. "Now Gaster, do you know where these skeleton children came from, why they have metal plates on their hands, and why they said their names are 1-S and 2-P?" Gaster looked at him nervously, still holding the back of his head. "Well... you see..."

After Gaster explained the full story, Asgore had conflicted feelings about what to do. He felt like punishing Gaster for hurting these children so much was the right thing to do, but he was so badly injured and cared for them like a father now. And they seemed to be quite attached to him, despite the pain he put them through, especially 2-P.

He helped Gaster stand up and sighed. "While I'm relieved you're alright and I'm glad you took responsibility for your actions and tried to make up for them, this kind of thing cannot go unpunished." Gaster nodded a little bit, trying to hide the small tears that were forming in his eyes. "Dr. W.D. Gaster, I am sentencing you to house arrest for one month. I hate doing this, especially to a friend, and while your position as Royal Scientist will not be revoked, and you may return to work as normal after your sentence is finished, you must be punished for hurting these children. Meanwhile, they will stay with Dr. Alphys in the lab until your house arrest period is served. You may see them again after you are freed."

Gaster nodded again, trying to conceal his shaking breath, hating the thought of being kept away from the skeleton children. "I understand, Your Majesty. Thank you for healing me. But may I say something to them before we go?" Asgore nodded. "Go ahead, Gaster." Gaster walked up to the small skeletons and kneeled down so he was at their eye level.

"I think now would be an appropriate time to give you two proper names. I've analyzed your fonts in the past based on your speech, and I have confirmed what they are." 1-S and 2-P looked at each other excitedly, then back at Gaster as he spoke again. "Subject 1-S, your name is now Sans." Sans looked proud of his new name, and tried to stand up straighter. Gaster then looked to his brother. "Subject 2-P, your name shall be Papyrus."

Papyrus smiled in approval of his new name, and they both hugged Gaster tightly. He smiled a bit too, glowing a faint green, and hugged them back. "Dr. Alphys will take good care of you while I'm serving my punishment, so make sure to be on your best behaviour for her. I'll be back before you know it, alright? I'll see you soon." He stood up, patted them both on the head, and Asgore put a hand on his shoulder as they left the room.
