Chapter 4 - Picture Perfect
As the elevator headed upwards, 1-S and 2-P kept a firm hold on each other's hands, not knowing what to expect from the outside world. Gaster noticed that they were nervous. "Don't be scared, you two. The monsters in the Underground are very kindhearted. They will see you as equals. Around now is the time when my coworker, Dr. Alphys, takes her mid-afternoon break, so there will be nobody around except us." The skeleton children looked at each other, then at Gaster. He raised his eyebrows. "I should probably find you two something else to wear instead of those things," he said, signalling towards the hospital-gown-esque clothing they were wearing. The elevator made a ding sound, whih caught his attention. "Oh, we're here. I have my own compartment of the lab, so you two will stay there while I get us all some food. Follow me." Gaster pushed the shelf out of the elevator and into the main part of the lab. He went behind the escalator on the far side and into a room with a desk, a computer, and a few stacks of notes in it. He pulled out two folding chairs for 1-S and 2-P to sit on, then went back and got the rest of the boxes. When he was finished, he headed for the door again. "You two stay here, okay? I'm going to get some food. If you hear a door or footsteps, don't investigate. It's probably just Dr. Alphys or King Asgore. I'll introduce you to them later." The two small skeletons nodded. "We'll be quiet," said 2-P innocently. Gaster smiled. "Good. Don't worry, I'll be back in a few minutes." With that, he left the office, closing the door behind him. 2-P and 1-S were so happy, their eyes were glowing green. They hadn't glowed green since they had first met each other.
"He's nice now! He's treating us better, he's going to be nice, I knew it!" 2-P whispered excitedly. 1-S looked towards the door and responded, "I don't trust him completely yet, but I'm going to try and be nice back to see if he really means what he's doing. I'm just happy he won't hurt you anymore." 1-S hugged his brother tightly, who of course hugged him back. "I'm so relieved he won't hurt you anymore, brother, I knew this whole time he could be nice if he tried!" 2-P said quietly, hugging 1-S tighter. "I wonder who those people were he was talking about..." A few footsteps outside made the small skeletons shut their mouths and freeze for a few seconds before slowly creeping away from the chairs and hiding under the desk. "H-Hello?" a female voice called. "D-Dr. Gaster? I thought I h-heard something..." The young skeletons were dead quiet. "What'll we do if she finds us?!" 1-S said quietly. "She might ask us where we came from, we can't say!" 2-P looked towards the door. No sign of Gaster yet. "I don't know, brother, but stay calm! He should be coming back any second now!" Soon, they heard a familiar voice outside. "Hello, Dr. Alphys, back from break?" Gaster said. "Yeah, I j-just got back. W-where were you?" the female voice asked him. "Just getting a bit of food. I didn't eat lunch today, since King Asgore and I went to Waterfall over my break." 2-P and 1-S stayed dead quiet. "W-Well, at least you're eating. I'll b-be out here if you n-need me, Dr. Gaster!" "Thank you, Alphys," Gaster responded as he entered the office and shut the door behind him. He spotted the two small skeletons hiding under the desk and signalled that they could come out. He was holding two paper bags in his hand. "It's just me, you two, it's alright," he whispered. "I brought us all something to eat." 2-P crawled out from under the desk, followed by 1-S, and he handed them a paper bag. "Whatever's in here, it smells good!" 1-S said. Gaster nodded, smiling softly. "They're called cinnamon buns. I got them from a little shop in a place called Snowdin. The woman who owns the shop makes them herself, and they might not be the healthiest, but they taste great and they're filling. Besides, you two deserved something special for going through so much up until now." 1-S opened the paper bag they had been given and saw two cinnamon buns inside. He let 2-P take one of them before taking his, and looked around for a place to put the bag. Gaster gently took it from him and put it in a small wastebasket near his desk. "It's understandable that you didn't know what to do with this, after all, before now I just took the plate and washed it myself. But I appreciate your first instinct not being to leave it on the ground."
2-P took a bite from the cinnamon bun. "This is really good!" he said. Gaster smiled. "I don't buy them that often, but they are delicious. I bought one for each of you." 1-S tried his too, and sure enough, he loved it. Once 2-P had finished eating, he looked up at Gaster, who had also quickly polished off a cinnamon bun. "Who's that person outside? The one you were talking to?" he asked. Gaster looked towards the door, then back at the small skeleton. "That's Dr. Alphys, my co-worker and fellow Royal Scientist. She's technically my assistant, but we treat each other more like equals. I'll introduce you to each other soon. Say, now would be a good time to find you two some new clothes, wouldn't it?" He got up from the chair and opened a box in the closet. He pulled a box of scarves from the back simply to make room, but 2-P took an interest in them, forming a particular attachment to a red one. Gaster smiled. "I wore that scarf all the time when I was younger. You can keep it if you like." 2-P's eyes sparkled like stars. "Really?! Thank you!" he cried, putting the scarf on. "That looks great on you, bro," 1-S said, smiling. 2-P tightened it a bit before Gaster found the box he was looking for. "I don't have much in here, but pick whatever you like and I'll help you put it on over the gowns you're wearing," he said as he opened the box. 2-P picked out a pair of red shoes, a dark grey long-sleeve shirt and matching pants, which were a little big but fit nicely with a bit of adjustment. 1-S took a liking to a pair of simple black shoes, along with some dark grey pants and a light grey hoodie. Gaster helped them put them on, and stood back to look at them. 2-P struck a proud pose and 1-S just smiled, his hands in the hoodie's pockets. Gaster felt a surge of pride, and his face lit up. 2-P apparently noticed, because he looked happy too.
Gaster took out his phone and snapped a photo, then showed it to them. "We look great!" 1-S said. 2-P just stared at it, smiling, his eyes glowing green. Gaster studied the picture cheerfully before something clicked in his head. He set his phone up so it leaned against a wall, and set a timer for ten seconds. He stood behind 1-S and 2-P, and they all smiled as the flash went off and the phone took a picture. "What was that?" 1-S asked. Gaster took his phone and pulled up the photo. "That was the timer feature. You can set it up so the phone waits a few seconds before taking a picture. This can be useful for taking group photos, like this one." He showed the photo to the smaller skeletons, and their faces lit up, their eyes glowing bright green. Gaster couldn't help glowing a bit himself, which brought back fond memories. The last time he could remember that his eyes glowed green were when he first discovered that 1-S and 2-P were alive. "We all look amazing!" 2-P said happily. He charged forward and hugged the Gaster tightly, startling him. 1-S shrugged, smiled and hugged him too. Gaster looked down at the smaller skeletons clinging onto him happily, and for the first time since their creation, he kneeled down and hugged them back. "Does this count as a family photo...?" 2-P asked. And to his excitement, Gaster nodded and smiled.
