TWENTY ONE. BROKEN BEYOND REPAIR

In the next few moments, chaos erupted.

"Oh, great. Alright, there's two on the parking deck. One of them's Maximoff, I'm gonna grab her." Tony stated over the ear piece, flying up. "Rhodey, you want to take Cap?"

Natasha cast a glance at Nora who nodded quickly. If she was going to "handle" Wanda, then now was the time to start. "Hey, Stark, can I hitch a ride?" she asked, hopefully as confidently as she could. Tony didn't answer, just held out an arm for her to jump up and grab. So, she ran for it, hopping onto the car Spider-Man once stood on to latch onto the Avenger's arm. He dropped a bit with her weight, but managed to propel himself upward, flying towards Wanda's location.

"God, you're like a monkey." he commented in her ear piece, making her chuckle.

"I get that a lot."

"Got two in the terminal, Wilson and Barnes." Rhodes informed.

Black Panther piped in. "Barnes is mine!"

Nora frowned a bit at Black Panther's need for vengeance against this Barnes character as the wind whipped at her face. She didn't dare look back, just in case she lost her grip trying to turn. All she focused on was in front of her, and spotting Wanda Maximoff. As her eyes darted around to look for her, Spider-Man's voice came over the comm. "Hey, Mr. Stark, what should I do?"

"What we discussed. Keep your distance. Web 'em up."

Under her mask, Nora frowned deeper. So, his inclusion in this was planned, by hers wasn't, considering their reactions to her showing up. In the corner of her eye, he zipped through the air, landing on the window, following the two figures who were running through the terminal. She couldn't see what he did next though, as Iron Man zoomed through the air, her iron gauntlet holding onto her hand so she didn't loose her grip. Even with the force of the wind, Nora was able to see around her pretty clearly, the mask around her eyes shielding her from the wind. She wondered if this was how Spider-Man's old lenses worked, before he got his cool new upgrade.

Tony took a look down at her. "I can see them, hold tight."

"What do you think I've been doing?" she yelled back but he didn't reply, instead something popped out of his shoulders, a weapon of sorts, aiming near Wanda and who Nora now could distinguish as Clint Barton, or Hawkeye. He was supposed to be retired. Captain Rogers must really be persuasive. The missile's from his suit fired around them, making them stagger to a stop. "Be careful!" Nora cried, terror flooding her system as rubble and debris fell around the two. They were supposed to be his friends, Stark said it himself that he wanted this to be as low-key as possible. This didn't seem low-key at all.

Again, he ignored her, dropping her down rather rudely in front of Clint and Wanda. She expected her feet to sting from the weight of the fall, but it seemed her boots absorbed most of the fall. She landed with one knee bent, her fist connecting with the concrete. Her head whipped up to see Wanda staring at her, eyes flashing red. As Nora collected herself, she felt Wanda's stare pierce into her, whispers of an unknown language began to fill her ears. She winced, Natasha had told her about Wanda's abilities to read minds and control them, but she hadn't told her how it would make her feel. It was like being poked and prodded, and it made her skin scrawl. She scrunched her face up, trying to push her out. She imagined putting up walls, in an attempt to shut her out. It must've worked, because Wanda blinked, eyes returning to normal, albeit shocked.

"It seems you brought someone like me." she said to Stark, who was hovering above them.

"Wanda, I think you hurt Vision's feelings." he replied with a hint of sarcasm.

She glared at him. "You locked me in my room."

"Okay. First, that's an exaggeration. Second, I did it to protect you. Hey, Clint."

"Hey, man. Look's like you're getting into the babysitting business."

Nora recoiled slightly at the jab. "Weren't you supposed to have hung up the bow and arrow or something?"

Tony nodded. "Clearly, retirement doesn't suit him. You got tired of shooting golf?"

Clint shrugged, notching an arrow. "Well, I played 18, I shot 18. Just can't seem to miss." he raised the bow, unleashing the arrow at the two of them. Nora lifted an arm as the arrow broke apart into smaller shrapnel, intended to get the two of them at once. Iron Man deflected them with his repulsers, while the arrow directed at Nora disintegrated once it came into contact with her sludge covered forearm.

"Eh, first time for everything." Iron Man quipped.

Clint chuckled darkly, making Nora uneasy. "Made you look."

Hearing a loud crash behind her, the young brunette whipped around to see a car slam next to Tony, then another and another until dozens were flying down onto Iron Man's form. Nora turned back around to see Wanda flicking her hands out, red energy circling around them. Nora groaned, sprinting toward her in an attempt to get her to stop. Wanda was too focused on getting the cars to come down, so she could easily catch her off guard, Clint was the problem. Fending off arrows while fighting someone with powers was not going to be an easy task, but if it meant Tony would have less broken bones, then she would at least try.

Her palm tingled with the decaying energy as she curled it into a fist, connecting it with Wanda's stomach. Wanda sucked in a deep breath at the sucker punch to gut, but Nora knew it didn't hurt her too much, she made sure of it, it was mostly to stun her. The cars behind them came to a halt, as Clint notched another arrow. Nora spun back, her foot knocking the arrow out of the arrow. "Go." she whispered to them..

Wanda walked toward her, clutching her stomach. "How did you do that?" she asked, looking down at her gloves that were no longer black.

She shook her head, glancing back at Stark under all the cars, struggling to get up. Hopefully, he wasn't paying attention. "There's no time to explain, just get out of here before Stark gets out." They didn't wait long before running away, leaving her to try and drag Stark out from under the rubble. Running over there, she watched him crawl out. "Here." she held out her hand, the older man taking it and lifting himself up.

Tony groaned as he stood up straight. "Should've thought that one through."

"How hurt are you, sir?" she asked him, trying to catch her breath as sweat began to bead on her forehead. She was already starting to get tired, her energy depleting. What she would do for a sandwich from Mr. Delmar's grocery store near Peter's apartment block.

She wondered if Peter was worried about where she was, or if Rafe and Aliya had given him Natasha's story. She could only imagine the number of missed calls she had now.

"Few contusions, nothing I can't handle." she didn't like his answer, but it wasn't like she could just ask him to get out of his suit so she could heal him. She didn't think her powers would work through the suit he wore.

Nora gestured at the mess around them, as fire from his missile strikes flickered around them. The cars now complete scrap. "What do we do about this stuff? Was this what you had in mind when you said we do this without structural damage."

"Okay, look, I do not need a kid on my ass right now. So, can you just shut up and let me think."

"We should check back with the rest of the group. Maybe Black Widow or the others got anyone."

Tony nodded. "You're right, maybe the other kid did what he was supposed to do."

Her heart leaped at bit at the mention of Spidey. "About him, he doesn't....you haven't told him who I am or anything, right?"

He held out his arm for her to grab ahold of. "I hate teenagers." he grumbled to himself.

"Wait, he's a teenager?" she began, but he just lifted them up into the air, not letting her ask too many questions. Nora should've known now was not the chance, but she couldn't help it. Lately, she had begun to get even more curious about his identity, and now, with him being recruited by the Avengers also, it only made her more curious. Perhaps he had been a person of interest for a while, which meant they knew he was. Tony must've met him out of costume, considering he knew he was a teenager. Perhaps she knew him.

She shuddered at the thought. God, she hoped it wasn't Flash or something.

-

They flew through the air for a bit, Nora in her own world before she heard someone scream. Glancing up, she noticed Spider-Man flying out the window, head knocking against a poll before he fell to the ground. Her breath caught in her throat as she watched him struggle to stand back up. "Hey, Mr. Stark, set me down!" she shouted over the wind. He looked over his shoulder at her, obviously confused by her statement. She just gave him a pleading look before he relented, dipping down so she could let go and drop down. She took off running in her partners direction, as Iron Man flew off to where the battle was. Spider-Man was wobbling around, trying to regain his balance. He probably had a concussion, but she would need to get closer to figure out.

"Spidey!" she called out and he stopped, but he didn't turn around. She slowed down, a little bit confused as to why he wasn't jumping for joy at the fact that she was here. Maybe it was the hit to the head that was making him so wary. "Hey, are you okay, I saw you hit your head." she was a little bit quieter now, now that it was just the two of them.

It took him a minute to respond, making Nora even more worried about his injury to the head. "It's okay, I'm good."

"What even happened? What had your webs catch onto, it looked like—"

"Look, maybe we should talk after all this. Mr. Stark told me I have to do my job today and I don't want to let him down." he made a move to use his webbing and fly away but she caught his wrist, preventing him from escaping.

"Hey, what's going on, talk to me. You always talk to me." Nora said, grip tightening to emphasis her point.

Even with a mask on, she could tell there was a inner turmoil inside Spidey's head. The white eyes narrowed slightly in some sort of frown. It was only then did they both realised how different they looked to each other. Mercy, in her more mechanical suit, and Spider-Man, in a suit that reflected his brand and his powers a lot more than his original suit. They looked like their realised selves, the type of superheroes they wanted to be, and yet they felt like complete strangers to one another.

"Please, Spidey," he winced at the nickname, "Talk to me."

He didn't have time to respond, as the sound of something exploding caught their attention. They both caught a glimpse of a truck flying in the air before it exploded near a handful of the Avengers. Nora let go of his wrist, both now realising their conversation was cut short. Looks like they really had to talk after everything.

"Alright." they heard Tony over the ear piece. "They're heading for the quinjet, let's cut them off."

The two partners gave each other a look. "Want a ride, Mercy?" he asked, although calling her by her superhero name felt odd now that he knew her real name. Oh god, that conversation was something he was not looking forward too. Something about, 'Hey, I've actually known you're my girlfriend since that time in Berlin and I've kept it from you because I'm an idiot who doesn't know how to talk about that kind of stuff', did not sound like it was going to go down well with Nora.

She nodded, latching onto his side as he pressed the web shooters now built into the arms of his suit. They were in the air for a few moments before they saw all the Avengers lining up. In the sky was Vision, floating above Captain Rogers team. "Captain Rogers." his voice echoed around the airport. "I know you believe what you're doing is right. But for the collective good you must surrender now." Spidey set them both down, Mercy dropping down beside Natasha who gave her a once over but Nora knew she wasn't her top priority right now. Nora gulped, eyes casting down the line of Avengers opposing them. This wasn't going to end well, for any of them.

Falcon and Captain Rogers exchanged words before they began walking towards them. Nora sighed, feeling her palms begin to tingle. She didn't want to fight, but it seemed like she didn't have a choice. "This isn't going to end well." Natasha commented beside her as they too began to stride toward each other, grim determination etched on their faces. Walking turned into jogging before Nora and Spider-Man exchanged a look.

"They aren't stopping!" he said, panic evident in his tone.

"Neither are we." said Tony, grim and serious.

Nora shook her head in disappointment before they all broke out into a sprint. They all kept pace, all the flyers arching into the air before descending down onto the other team. Captain Rogers blocked a punch as Iron Man landed, kicking him in the head. Clint fired an arrow at Vision. War Machine began chasing after Falcon as Bucky fended off Black Panther. A guy with a silver helmut she had never seen before went to throw a punch at her , but she ducked, kicking his feet in an attempt to bring him to the ground, but all she did was duck out of the way of a repulser blast from Iron Man that knocked him over. Spider-Man flipped above them, dodging cars Wanda was throwing at him. Nora ran to her, catching her wrist and twisting it, before bringing her knee to the girl's forehead.

The girl cried out, rage in her eyes as she practically growled at her. As the group dispersed, Nora gave her an apologetic look. "You have no idea how sorry I am."

"You are not like me." Wanda wheezed, accent thick. "I've never seen enhanced like you."

"We're more alike than you think, Ms. Maximoff."

"No," the Avenger ground out, shaking her head as she composed herself. "I don't think we are." Red energy swirled around her hand as she flicked her hand up, before pulling it to the side. A shuffle bus came barrelling towards her. Nora yelped, but she stayed in her place, the tingling in her palms spreading into her arms as well. She had never tried to stop a moving object before, this seemed like the perfect place to try. Her fingers spread out, bracing for the impact of the bus. It collided with her hands, the black sludge beginning to eat at the truck as she struggled to push back at the force of the truck. Her nails curled into the truck as it began to rust and break apart in front of her. Flakes of rusted metal caught in the wind like snowfall. Nora turned to her, raising a brow.

"Now, I don't want to hurt you anymore than I already have. I'm actually here to he—" she took a step forward before something whacked against her side, pushing her back and making her skid against the ground. She leaned up on her elbows to see Captain Rogers catch his shield, as Wanda jogged away, knowing the situation would be handled by her superior. "Oh, great." she said to herself as Captain Rogers bounded for her.

"Really didn't think I'd have to hit a teenage girl today." he said, actually empathy in his voice. "So, I'm sorry about this whole thing. You shouldn't be involved."

Nora brushed herself off. "In all honesty, Captain, I don't want to hurt you guys. Any of you guys."

"Then why are you fighting?"

"I don't exactly have a choice when you guys are swinging at me. I'm going to defend myself." she told him as she evaded his attacks. "Look, I was brought here to make sure no one would get hurt, on either side."

He frowned, faltering. "Stark wouldn't assign someone for that."

"Stark didn't bring me here." she looked up as she saw someone swing for him. "Look out."

Cap turned in the direction of Spider-Man, flinging his shield his way, cutting his line of webbing. He landed perfectly on the ground. "That thing does not obey the laws of physics at all!" he said, leaning his elbows against his knees. Nora smirked, this was the Spidey she knew.

"Look kid, I'm going tell you what I told your friend. There's a lot going on here that either of you don't understand."

Spidey glanced at Nora. "Mr. Stark said you'd say that, wow." he fired his webs at Steve's hand and ankle. He pulled him towards him and kicked him the backwards, before rolling himself near Mercy. "He also said to go for your legs!" he laughed a bit.

"You got this?" Nora commented.

"Oh yeah, I got this."

She smiled and nodded, taking off running back into the fray. She smiled and nodded, taking off running back into the fray. The fight continued, Nora fighting off many blows from Captain Rogers side. Most of them didn't last long, because as soon as they began fighting, they would get tackled by someone else. It was a mess of a fight, everyone had personal vendetta's against someone on the opposing team. Every now and then, Nora would sneak over to someone hurt and try to heal them. That was her job, to try and make sure no one got seriously hurt, but with this much rage in everyone, it was mostly her side that accepted the healing, Captain's side needed a little more persuasion.

Time passed before Nora was starting to get winded. She had never used her powers for this length of time, and it was taking a lot out of her. She found her way out of the fight, leaning against a wall as she struggled to catch her breath. As she watched the fight, sadness struck her heart, she used to love the Avengers, the team that kept the world safe, and now here they were, broken beyond repair. Fighting each other over a piece of paper. Neither side was right, neither side was wrong. This was all going to amount to nothing. As she ran a hand over her face, the entire fight stopped. When she took her hand away, standing in the middle of everyone, was the gy with the silver helmut, no longer his normal size. He had grown over twenty feet tall and he had his fist around War Machine's foot.

"Holy shit!" she heard from behind her, as she stared in shock. Spider-Man came rushing toward her. "Do you see that?"

"Yeah..." Nora said in wonder, not even looking at her partner.

"Okay," Tony started as he struggled to get Rhodes out of his grip. "Anybody on our side hiding any shocking and fantastic abilities they'd like to disclose, I'm open to suggestion."

Spider-Man turned to her. "You do, you've got abilities!"

Nora took a step back. "I don't know, this seems too big for me."

"No, come on, you got this."

"No, Spidey, I don't—" in the corner of her eye, she saw two figures running for the quinjet. "Hang on, I gotta do something."

He caught onto her wrist, a mirror to what she had done earlier. "Whoa, hang on, where are you going?"

"Let go of me, I can stop this." she told him, trying to get her wrist out of his hold.

He frowned at her. "What do you mean, we've got to stop him!" he pointed to the Giant Man in the sky.

"No, you've got the stop him. My job today was to make sure no one gets hurt, and the only way I can do that is if you let me go!" she wasn't going to tell him what she had planned, if she did, she was sure he wasn't going to like it. Eventually her wrist came free and she ran for the hangar, leaving Spider-Man in the dust. But before she was completely out of earshot, she heard Spider-Man say something that almost made her stop.

"I hope you know what you're doing, Nora."

As she ran, her brain didn't register what he had said for a long while, because all she was focused on was getting the hangar. Above her, Vision shot a laser beam at the tower near the hangar, cutting through it like paper. The building began to collapse, if it wasn't for Wanda who was holding it aloft with her powers. Running past her, Nora knew what she had to do. "Keep that up until I get there!" she shouted to her. Wanda frowned, but somehow trusted what she was saying. Nora kept running, picking up speed when she saw the red glow under the building disappear and heard a loud sonic blast and a shrill scream from behind her.

Just keep running, she told herself, you're going to save everyone.

"Mercy, what are you doing?" she heard Rhodes asked over the comm. He must've been the one to use the sonic disrupter on Wanda.

She didn't answer, just kept running. Even when her lungs were starting to burn.

Nora felt her palms tingle as she came to the base of the building. Using all the energy left in her, she punched both her fists into the building. The black sludge began to crawl up the building, crumbling away and giving both Captain Rogers and his friend a window to go through.

"Go!" Nora cried, her head already getting light headed. "Get out of here, get to the doctor!" She could barely see Captain Rogers nod at her before her vision began to swim. The entire building was encased in the goo before she couldn't hold it anymore. As the bricks began to turn to dust, she dislodged her hands from the rubble. She could barely comprehend what was going on around her as she staggered away from the hangar. A few metres in front of her lay Wanda, clutching her head. She stood there a few moments, looking up to see Spider-Man fight off Giant Man.

Then, like a rag doll, she crumpled to the ground, her world going black.
