Chapter 6

Nightmares again plague me as I sleep. But these are different. Instead of me walking through the woods, I'm at the graveyard, standing in front of Mom's grave. A rose in my hand, I gently set it against her grave. "I don't know what to do, Mom," I whisper. "I wish you were here."

Standing up, I turn around, then gasp as I hear a sort of twinkling noise behind me. Whirling around, I gasp, tears welling in my eyes. My mom stands in front of me, her body transparent. "My darling girl," she says, reaching for my cheek.

I lean into her, but bite back a sob as my face only touches air. "Mom, please," I say, my voice breaking. "I need you here."

She shakes her head and holds out her hand, a necklace appearing in her palm before she drops it into my hand. "Honey, I'm always with you in spirit."

Fear runs through me as I see her start to fade. "No," I say, choking back a sob. She smiles as she nods at the necklace. A heartbeat later, she's gone. I collapse on the ground, sobbing.

Opening my palm, I stare at the necklace, mesmerised by its beauty. It's a moonstone. Carefully placing it around my neck, I cradle the moonstone in my palm, looking down at it.

I hear rustling behind me and turn around, my free hand outstretched in front of me. Zach is in front of me, a single red rose in his hand. "What do you want?" I ask, swiping at my eyes.

Zach glances at me, true remorse and guilt in his eyes. "I just wanted to apologise. I'm so sorry. Your mother was an amazing woman. She didn't deserve what happened to her."

Before I can ask him what he means, he places the rose on her grave, then walks away. I stare after him, then a frown appears on my face as I hear a faint ringing noise. My head starts feeling weird and I see spots appear in my vision.

Groaning, I open my eyes, jolting upright. I glance around the room, breathing heavily. My clock reads 7:45 A.M. I take a deep breath as I get out of bed, jumping in the shower. I stand under the hot water, letting it wash away the strangeness of the dream.

After I get dressed, I go to grab my backpack and notice a gorgeous moonstone necklace on my dresser. My eyes widen. It's the same necklace from the dream. I carefully put it on and walk downstairs, my head throbbing. Dad goes still as he sees the necklace. "Where'd you get that necklace?" He asks, his face pale.

"I found it on my dresser."

I kiss him before grabbing breakfast and heading to school. The first person I see when I walk inside is Zach. He holds my gaze until I finally look away.

My phone buzzes and I check it, all the colour draining from my face. Full moon tonight is all it says on the screen. I notice it came from an unknown number. Chills run down my spine as I wonder who could be sending me messages.

Tara walks up to me, smiling. She puts a hand on my shoulder and I turn around, flinching. "You okay?" She asks.

"Yeah, sorry. What's up?" The bell rings and we walk to class.

Tara keeps her voice down as she talks. "It's a full moon tonight. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to text me." I nod. The rest of the day passes in a blur. After my last class, I head home, dreading the pile of homework in my backpack.

Hours later, I finally finish my last sheet of homework, then glance outside at the moon. I feel a sort of tug inside me, as if someone is pulling a string inside me. Grabbing my phone, I quickly text Tara. 'Hey. I can't explain everything over the phone, but I have to take care of something tonight. If my dad asks where I am, will you just say I'm studying at your house?'

My phone buzzes seconds later, a text from Tara appearing on the screen. I breathe a sigh of relief as I read the text. 'Sure. No problem.' Throwing a jacket on, I quietly walk out the front door, closing it silently behind me.
