Chapter 2
Visions of what could be behind that door haunted my dreams that night. My first thought was a shrine/tribute to Mom. But then my thoughts became darker. I am walking through the graveyard, headed to Mom's grave when I hear a scream. Rushing towards the sound, I am horrified to find Dad cradling Mom's lifeless body in his arms.
A tall, black vampire with grey eyes stands in front of Dad, looking down at Mom. He sees me and his face twists into a terrifying smile. I suppress a shudder as he stares at me. "This is the famous Dani I've heard so much about?" He asks.
Dad grabs my hand, pulling me behind him. "Leave her alone, Ross. She has nothing to do with this."
Seconds later, I wake up to my alarm clock blaring. My hands are shaking so badly, it takes me several tries to turn off my alarm. As I get dressed, the guy from my dream haunts my mind.
I walk downstairs and see Dad sitting at the kitchen table. He sees me and smiles, kissing me on the head. "Hey, Bella. How'd you sleep?"
Ignoring his question, I sit across from him. "Who's Ross?" I ask. Dad's face drains of colour at the mention of that name.
He grabs my hand, opening his mouth like he's going to speak, then glances at the clock. "You don't want to be late for school," he says.
I glance at him, but he avoids my gaze. Sighing, I grab my backpack, heading to school.
A girl that I've seen in a few of my classes walks up to me. "I'm Tara," she says, smiling.
"Bella," I reply. "Nice to meet you." The bell rings and I head to my locker, then walk to my next class. After my last class, I put my books in my locker before heading home.
My phone buzzes and I glance at it to see a text from an unknown number. 'Hey, Bella. It's Tara. Hope you don't mind; I got your number from the school directory. Wanna meet up tomorrow before school to study?'
A smile appears on my face as I text Tara back. 'Sure! The Brew at 8:00?' My phone buzzes moments later. 'Great. See you then!'
I come home again to an empty house. Flashes of my dream float through my head as I sigh.
I don't care what the consequences are. I'm going to find out what's in that room. Taking a deep breath, I walk to the door and jiggle the doorknob, finding it locked as usual. I raise an eyebrow as I reach behind my head, grabbing a bobby pin from my hair. Carefully inserting it into the lock, it clicks open seconds later.
Nothing could've prepared me for what stands before me. Research. Piles and piles of it. I see topics ranging from vampire attacks to werewolf sightings. My heart pounding, I pick up one of the sheets of paper, scanning it. Werewolves: fact or fiction? Local mother seems to have a theory that may surprise you.
I look at the bottom of the article and see a name. Kelli Andrews. That's my grandmother. Taking a deep breath, I dial her number, praying she'll answer.
A warm voice answers moments later. "Hello?"
I have to blink back tears when I hear her voice. "Grandma? It's Bella. Are you busy tonight? I really need to talk to you about something."
A laugh comes from the other line. "I'm never too busy to see my only grandchild! Come over anytime."
I sigh, relieved. "Okay, Grandma. I'll come over after dinner." A few minutes later, I hang up. I hate keeping things from Dad, but I have to know.
