The feeling was familiar
The soft rustle
Echoing through my ears
The pleasant weight
When I lift my shoulders
Reassuring and subtle.
I look down
And see the edge that was
Somehow always there;
My starting point.
My bare feet dangle
Skimming the art
I see below.
Sometimes it's lights and cars
And sometimes it's sandy floors
Maybe oceans
With waters so clear
But up above
Its always
A starry sky
With soft clouds
Spotting here and there.
I smile;
I know what happens
Its always the same
Just a change of scenery.
I lift my face towards the sky,
Close my eyes
As the familiar zap
Runs through my veins
I arch my back
As I feel them unfold
Behind me
Majestic and proud
Coloured white like a dove's,
Ethereal,
Yet strong.
They spread
Ready to bear my weight
Ready to catch me.
I take the last step
And soar
As I catch the wind
Beneath my wings
The currents of air
Passing through the feathers
Tingles my core
And surges me forward
I shoot up
And dive forwards
Spinning elegantly as I go
My hair whipping around me
I giggle
Feeling high
As I whiz past
Skyscrapers and towers
Sand dunes and mountains
Or the wide open sea so blue.
The creatures of the sky
Join me sometimes;
Proud creations
Who welcome me so dearly
To their territories
Untainted and pure.
I race with them, sometimes
To feel the thrill
Rushing through my blood
Heightening my senses
As the cool air brushes my cheeks.
I glide over open waters
Letting my fingers
Skim the surface;
When I circle fast
And spiral up
The water follows me
In a magnificent arc
That cuts through
The midnight blue.
As my time in the sky
Comes close to ending
I feel the familiar throb in my heart
As the stars bid me goodbye
And I know in a moment
I'd be back home.
I close my eyes tightly
Wishing with all my heart
That it would last.
But alas,
When I open my eyes
My white ceiling greets me.
I peek behind me
Hoping to catch a glimpse
Of the beauties that carry me
Through the clouds
But all I see is a corner
Of a sharp shoulder blade.
I peek beneath my sheets
Hoping to catch a glimpse
Of the strong legs
That steer me through flight
But all I see is a tangle of limbs
That lay limp and useless.
I sigh.
Life.
I reach forward and grab my special chair
With wheels.
As I lower myself into it
My smile never leaves.
I may not walk
On this small, mortal world
But in my dreams
I soar
