36: Situating a Second Redo

Hermione's POV:

Yikes.

Somebody's foot was in my face, somebody's body was draped over my butt, and I couldn't see my limbs!

AHHHHHHHHHHH!

This was an awkward situation, which only got worse when Harry walked in.

"AHHHHHH" He screeched, seeing the room full of girls in only their shirts and underwear.

"EEEEEK!" We all echoed, diving deeper into the blankets.

"Mate what's with the AHHH!" Blaise slapped a hand over his eyes.

I groan and pick up my wand. I send them flying into the hallway and mutter a locking charm for the door.

Once my friends all stop squealing like excited pigs, I stand up and stretch.

I had a really weird night's rest. I yawn and try to prepare for classes until I remember....

LIFE CLASS!

I groan, this was going to be a disaster!

Luna stirs as she just woke up. I giggle a bit. That girl could sleep through anything!

"Hnnnggg." Lavender groans.

"Life classes today." Ginny remarks.

"Once or twice a week, can't wait to see what we'll do today!" I retort sarcastically. "Yay!"

Astoria huffs. "We're literally being ripped off a free block! All the other years get a free block everyday! We don't! And it doesn't help that we have school Sunday through Saturday!"

She dramatically flopped back onto the bed. Classic Astoria, being your average ladylike drama queen!

"Everything will be okay," Pansy reassures me, patting me on the back. "But first...you need a hot outfit."

The next thing I know, I'm being shoved into my bathroom with an entire outfit in my hands.

I put on a lacy, black halter top bra. Of course.

Next, I pull on a purple sweater like thing. It's not exactly a sweater because the sleeves are connected to the bottom of the top, so whenever I raise my arms, the entire shirt lifts up! Urgh!

Finally, I pull on some black yoga leggings. Whoa.

I turn around and look over myself. I didn't look too bad!

I put my hair in a messy bun and walk out.

"See? Told ya!" Pansy boasts.

I huff teasingly. "Okay, you do have a good sense for picking out an outfit."

She twirls past me and into the bathroom. "I know!" She slams the door behind her and starts to change...I assume...

Ginny brushes past me. "Sorry!" I laugh.

"It's fine." I sit down at my desk, and look solemnly over to Draco's. His quill, parchment, and inkwell still there, left abandoned in time. I feel an urge to take his quill and inhale it's scent, his musky cologne, but I fight it. Not now! I tell myself. I have to get to breakfast!

I pack my bag for the day. Inkwell, parchment, quills, some candy (for emergencies), Life Class diary, Transfiguration book, Potions book, and my phone. I decided to only carry my stuff for morning classes, I could get the rest after lunch.

I silently wait for the bustle of my friends to calm down before heading out.

I sit down at my seat in the Great Hall, lips pursed. Draco silently sits next to me, knowing that he can't change places or else somebody would come and ask.

I pile my plate with pancakes, fruit, syrup, bacon, eggs, and potatoes. Draco opens his mouth to say something, but I cut him off.

"Shut up!" I snap.

Draco sighs and starts to play with his food. He pushes his eggs around, but doesn't eat them. "We have uhh..." He trails off. "Life Class."

"I know," I hiss. "Just pretend then, hm? Afterall, we're only acquaintances."

He frowns and turns to me. "Look I'm sorry-"

A bell chimes in the distance, and I find it as the perfect excuse to leave. Still enraged at him being "sorry", I stalk off, not giving him another thought.

I sit down in my Life Class seat. Technically, the seats aren't assigned besides the fact that you need to sit with your spouse. That was actually our seating arrangement for almost every class...

I don't see a Professor anywhere, but I see a bunch of happy couples milling around. My heart pangs, I wish I could have that...

I see my friends coming in from my peripheral vision, but I pretend not to notice them. I continue to stare blankly ahead at the board.

I can tell that Draco wants to talk, but why would I respond? If he only wanted to be acquaintances who just so happened to be getting married, then we would only be acquaintances who just so happened to be getting married!

Professor Slughorn walks into the classroom and pulls out a small piece of parchment from inside his robes pocket. He clears his throat and begins to read, "Students...today I will be preparing you all with skills...needed to find a future profession..." He trails off to read the rest of the parchment, then throws it behind him and continues. "You will be asked questions by your spouses about an ideal job. When you're finished...eh. Come to me."

Draco turns towards me, and I can feel his eyes burning holes into my back. I slowly turn around, and once my eyes catch his, I feel my heart skip a beat. His eyes held so much genuine emotion that I almost wanted to forgive him.

Almost.

"So...what would you er...want to do?" Draco asks.

I huff. "Minister of Magic, obviously!"

Draco nods. "I'm taking over my father's company."

I clear my throat. "Good, now we can tell Slughorn and-"

Draco pulls on my arm. "Hermione, can we talk?"

From the corner of my eye, I see Astoria flash me a small thumbs up. I give her a small smile.

"Fine." I agree.

I sit down and he clears his throat. "Look, I'm really sorry about-"

"You said you would handle it." I interrupt. Closing my eyes, squeezing them tightly together, I continue. "You said...you would handle it...and you didn't!"

Draco sighs and closes his eyes, letting a lone tear fall out. "I did...I just did it the wrong way."

My heart pangs seeing the tear fall from his eye. Without having time to properly think about it, my mother-like instincts kick in and I wipe away his tears.

"I know, but that's the thing. I can't be walking on cracked glass, Draco," I admit. "I tell you something and you get jealous and you react horribly! With Viktor, and now you don't even want to be friends? I thought we started over and we were trying?"

He pulls me close to him, and I rest in his arms. I somehow feel safe and protected, despite the situation.

"I know," He replies. "I don't know why I do that...I just feel..." He shakes his head. "I'm not sure how to describe it."

I understand this, I felt similarly.

"I just...I want you to promise me...that we won't be walking on cracked glass anymore. I won't keep secrets and you...you need to not be jealous." I propose, shoulders shaking.

"I think that sounds reasonable." He agreed. "It'll take some time, but I think we can get over it. I'm broken, Hermione, I'm a horrible person whose heart needs fixing."

I frown at him. "You aren't horrible."

He sneers. "My past is."

I just pat his shoulder and smile at him. "Second redo?"

He smiles back at me. "Second redo."

I smile happily, content with the agreement that Draco and I have reached. He promised to keep up his end of the bargain...but I still haven't told him my biggest secret...

I walk into the Great Hall for lunch and I'm immediately shocked at what I see.

"Ron!?"
