Austin's POV
We woke up early the next day and hurried to the breakfast room; we were pretty accurate with all the locations of the halls because they never changed since we got here.
"Good morning General McCustin," Hazel greeted.
The General looked confused for a few moments, but then bid her good morning back. I could see the confusion on his face as he told Hazel that she must be a new member because he had never seen her around in training. Hazel pretend to look like she understood what the general said, but the minute he was out of hearing range, she turned to me.
"Austin, do I still look like Hazel?" she asked me worriedly.
"I'm not sure...I don't remember what we looked like," then an idea popped into my
mind. "Hey, why don't we find out what we looked like back then?"
"Yeah, okay," Hazel said slowly, "but I need to eat first. I'm starving."
"Okay."
We both went to the counter where all the food was placed neatly and took a plate of our favorite breakfast. But when we looked at our schedule, we realized that Hazel's morning training was scheduled earlier than before and we had to rush to get on time. So we ended up standing on the track before we could track down any trace of the real Hazel and Austin.
"Attention all soldiers," our trainer called out, "on the first day, we will be doing attendance to make sure that everyone who signed up is present at the correct location."
Then his assistant started calling out names and it took me a while to realize that he called out Justin McCalla. I then raised my hand and made sure they knows that I was present.
Hazel nudged me and whispered in my ears, "If you don't get used to the new name, then we'll have lots of troubles to deal with." I nodded, agreeing to her observation.
The training was as harsh as I remembered, but I swore I would do anything to beat Kevin Thompson this time. I did everything the trainer barked out and obeyed to all the difficult and tiring practices. I was still given the assignment as a ranger and so was Hazel. Next Monday will be the first practice match and I recalled from last time that that was the day Kevin nearly murdered me in our match. I could never forget the proud smile of the generals and the satisfied laughters of the rangers in the crowd watching our fight. He smashed me against the cement and had bring the end of his knife upon my face, crushing whatever left of me. It was brutal. It was not suppose to be like that. The enemy was to show mercy, not ambition even when he knew that his opponent cannot rise again. I was pissed. I was the best hand-to-hand combatter in my group, but Kevin, a few years younger than me, easily defeated me. Before our match was over, I managed to get a few scars on his stunning face, but I remembered how I envied his electric blue eyes, his sunshined hair, and his strong, dependable build; the type of features a girl could bury her head into and escape from the world. The memory of me aiming my knife for his eyes was still embedded in my mind and guilt washed over me every time I thought of what I'd done. I wondered if he'll ever know that in a few days, he will lose one of his enchanting eyes. Then I shook my head, no, I thought, I'm not going to get beaten up by a brat again. I'll win this time. I'll win for Hazel and possibly get my rank up higher before the war. Then I can influence the general because I have more power. Ideas rushed through my brain like icy, cold water and I was dizzied for a few moments.
"Hey," Hazel snapped her fingers, "earth to Justin?"
I fell back to the reality and focused my eyes.
"You called me Justin."
"Psh, isn't that your name?" Hazel smirked, but silently pointed behind my back.
I turned abruptly and a smile spread across my face.
They were here, standing a few feet away from us.
The real Hazel and Austin.
