Chapter 6

They pulled over at an old park on the outskirts of town. The place was vaguely familiar; she remembered being there with her dad when she was little. She didn't remember a lot of things from her childhood and this one was almost not there. The park was newly renovated and it held the smell of fresh paint. A small open air event was held, perhaps to draw awareness to the park. There were different tents advertising and selling their products. Janelle's eyes scanned the area, trying to judge its level of safety by assessing the kind of people she saw. Her eyes fell on a stall on the right of where they stood. There were a couple of vitrines displaying different types of assorted candies. Her heart sang with joy and her face broke into a smile.

"See anything you like?" Luke asked, watching her.

"Yes, over there," she pointed to the tent and his eyes followed her. His eyes held that mischievous glint again and he smirked.

"And the angel has a sweet tooth eh?" he teased as he quirked an eyebrow. She rolled her eyes and sighed.

"Don't call me that, I told you before."

"Whatever you say milady," he gave her a mock bow and she threw him a disapproving look and began walking towards the tent. He chuckled and followed after her.

As they neared the tent, she began to worry about how she was going to pay. She had slipped just a couple bucks in her purse earlier before rushing out of the house, but she wasn't sure that would be enough. Best to just take a few things then, she thought, sighing inwardly. She really wanted those candies; her mouth already watering at the thought of them. Or he could be a gentleman and pay for her? She shrugged.

"We can split the bills," she said, hoping he would pick just a few things. When she didn't get an answer, she looked up at him. He had a funny look on his face, like he found her comment amusing.

"Did I say something funny? I seemed to have missed the joke." She put just enough annoyance into her voice.

"You can take anything you want, I'll pay. And if you're having a guilt trip, don't worry; you can pay me back in some other way next time." Yipeeeeee! She felt her heart do a somersault. Wait what?

"What do you mean pay back in some other way?"She groaned inwardly when she saw his smirk.

"What do you think, Nell?"

"That you're an asshole?"

"Hmm. Wrong answer."

He started advancing towards her, his smile gone. He had a menacing look on his face and the semblance of a predator. He growled. She took a step back, matching every one of his. Her face was ashen and she was already shaking. Beads of sweat appeared on her forehead as they continued moving slowly. She gulped. I knew he was dangerous, I knew it! Now he's going to kill me. I never should have come out. Fear was written all over her face.

"Luke? I'm sorry, I -"

He picked her up and slung her over his shoulder, like an eagle swoops down on its prey.

"What are you doing? Put me down now!" She kept kicking and lashing her arms, hitting his back with her fists. He chuckled and kept walking towards the tent with candies. When she realized what he was doing, she went red with embarrassment.

"Luke, put me down this very minute! Put me down or else I'll shout this place down and sue you for assault."

"Have it your way then. But I'll suggest you keep it down, people are staring." True to his words, they had caused quite a scene. People were pointing at them and laughing, others taking pictures of them. Stupid, stupid, stupid! They think this is cute? She groaned and covered her face with her hands.

When they got to the candy tent, he put her down. She speared him with her eyes and he winked, making her even angrier. The lady in the tent smiled at them. She looked in her late 50's, her hair already white and wrinkles lined her face.

"Your girlfriend is cute," she said. Janelle looked like someone just spat in her cheerios.

"I'm not -"

"Thanks ma'am, I tell her every day." He grinned and she just glared at him, smoke coming out of her head. Before the old lady could gush over his pretty 'girlfriend', he pointed at the closest jar of candies. "We'd love a few of those, please"

"Oh! You can pick as much as you want child, go ahead. I'll even give you a discount, for your pretty girlfriend."

Janelle blushed. If posing as his girlfriend will get them as much candies as they wanted, she didn't mind. She didn't even feel guilty for having him pay; he deserved it for disconcerting her like that. She walked over to the vitrine and dipped her hand in a jar.

When they were done, the old lady packaged their candies in a bag and gave them a generous discount, just as she'd promised. They thanked her and walked over to the next tent. By the time they were done, Luke had a really big bag of stuff. Of course, she had made him carry everything. She was no longer so mad, but she wanted to punish him a bit. By the time they got to the grass, he looked like he'd just gone 3 laps around the whole park. He splayed the blanket they'd gotten from one of the tents and flopped on it. She drew her eyebrows together in a look of disapproval and shook her head.

"Pathetic."
