The plane finally landed and Jessica was anxious to get out of there. Their first stop was Venice, the city of canals. Jessica had always wanted to go there. She had always thought it was a beautiful city. However, she was most excited about their next destination, Paris. She wasn't going to let that preference eclipse the other stops, though. She was decided to enjoy every single moment of the trip.
"Do you need help with that?" Brad asked her without leaving her time to answer. He took down Jessica's suitcase from the shelf above them. Usually, Jessica would have been proud and refuse any type of help. But she knew that Brad had only done it with the best intentions.
"No, I didn't but thank you, Brad." She honestly thanked him. They walked together out of the plane and into the airport, there were so many people she was afraid one of them could get lost. She saw how Brad's gaze quickly switched to MJ when she passed by before getting to the customs check. Jessica began her part as a match-maker. "You should go and talk to her."
"What should I talk about?"
"Tell her about the depressing movie we saw on the plane, she loves those." She had to admit that she hadn't enjoyed that one as much as the comedy one.
"Okay." He smiled and took a deep breath. "Wish me luck."
Once he left, Jessica made her way towards Peter. He was talking to Ned underneath a screen that changed images, first showing a landscape of the city and then displaying a piece of artwork in memoriam to Iron Man. His lost had made a global impact and she could see that.
Ned saw Jessica walking towards them and waved at her but instead of greeting her, her boyfriend just made a petty comment. "Did you have a good time with Brad?"
"Actually, yeah." She struck back. The look Peter gave her was a mixture of surprise and jealousy. Two could play this game. But she didn't want things to be bad between them two, so she decided to reassure things to him again. "I told you not to worry about him. I'm more concerned about Flash."
"What?" Peter's voice sounded like it was the first time he'd heard about that. He sure had noticed that Flash was trying to get with his girlfriend, right?
"Hey, babe." Their heads immediately redirected towards Ned and Betty. "Can you hold this for me, please?"
"Yeah, of course." Betty gave him a peck on the cheek after he took the bag she handed him.
Jessica and Peter put their argument aside to share a questioned look between them. That was something else.
"What was that?"
Ned cocked his head sideways and gave them a dreamy smile. "Well, we actually got to talking on the plane and it turns out we have a lot in common. So, um, we're boyfriend and girlfriend now."
Jessica's jaw dropped. Peter was still bewildered. "Whatever happened to being an American bachelor in Europe?"
"Peter, those were the words of a young boy. That boy met a woman. A very strong, powerful woman and now, that boy is a man." His answer left Peter speechless.
Jessica, on the other hand, was glad for their friends. At least someone would take advantage of all the romantic opportunities of the trip. "You know what, Ned? I'm happy for you."
"Thank you, Jessica."
"Babe?" Betty called him and he responded without hesitation.
"Coming, babe!"
He left them without even looking their way. They were an odd couple, she never would have said that they would end up together but at least they looked happy with each other's company. "Looks like at least they are going to enjoy a romantic vacation." Jessica sulked under her breath and started walking, still resentful.
"Come on, Jess!" Peter said behind her. "Don't be like that."
A police dog approached him and stopped to sniff his suitcase. The Italian authorities stopped Peter and Jessica raised an eyebrow at him. "You'd better hurry up with that or you'll get left behind." She teased.
But karma decided to balance things between the two and just when a customs guard passed by Jessica to inspect Peter's suitcase, the metal detector hanging from his belt went off. She might have, unintentionally, manipulated the radiation surrounding her and that had set off the metal detector. The guard, who didn't seem to know that, forgot about Peter's case and immediately halted Jessica.
"I could tell you the same thing." Jessica really wanted to mock Peter's words but managed to restrict herself in order to not make her encounter with the authorities even worse.
As the guard called a female colleague to register Jessica, she could see how they opened Peter's case and the bright red color of his suit popped out. May must have put it in there. They both froze but the lady examining the suitcase ignored that and called Peter out for carrying a banana.
"This." She said holding the yellow fruit in front of Peter's face. "No."
The teens looked at each other relieved. That had been really close. Nevertheless, they were about to find out that was the least of their problems.
A female guard started registering Jessica in search of any metal objects that might have set off the detector. She obviously found nothing but the detector wouldn't stop beeping. Jessica tried to calm down to stop her powers from interfering.
"This happens all the time. I manipulate radiation. I might have messed up the magnetic sensor of the detector..." She tried to explain to the guards but they didn't understand English and the girl didn't speak a single word of Italian. "I have su-per-po-wers." She slowly spoke, pausing between every syllable. "The Avengers?" The screen above them showed Tony's image once more and she pointed at it. "I'm Iron Man's daughter. Él es mi padre."
"That's Spanish." Peter pointed out.
"Yeah, I don't know anything in Italian."
After sharing a few sentences between them, the guards finally recognized Jessica. Or maybe they gave up trying to find out what the hell was happening with the detector. Anyway, they let the pair go back to their class group.
"We're here!"
"Thank goodness." Mr Harrington exhaled relieved that he hadn't lost any student. "Let's go. We've got to take a bus from here and then a Vaporetto, which is basically a water bus."
. . .
Jessica hadn't been as lucky in the Vaporetto as she had in the plane. On their way to the hotel, she saw how Brad and MJ spent all the time talking and Ned and Betty took pictures of each other. And in the meanwhile, Flash kept talking to her since he had taken the spot right next to her. Jessica fully ignored him and, instead, enjoyed the landscape while occasionally glaring at Peter, who was sitting all the way across the boat. He didn't lay his eyes on her, at least not when she was looking his way, but Jessica could tell that he was fully aware he was being looked at.
"I mean, I've always wanted to come here. I think this is one of the most romantic places on earth." She heard Flash say at one point. "But it is also a very historic place. Da Vinci was born here-"
"He was not." She rectified. "He was a bastard from a village called Vinci. That's why he's called Da Vinci."
Flash blinked a few times. His plan to impress her with his newly acquired knowledge had been a total failure. He took out his phone, where he had noted everything he wanted to say. "Wow, I really need to check my facts..."
Jessica gave him a pitiful look. She didn't want to come up as mean, but he was really annoying. In the beginning, when she had come back to school, she found his constant efforts to conquering her somewhat entertaining. But after she had made clear that she wasn't interested and he kept insisting, those efforts were just wearying.
"Looks like we're here!"
The façade of the hotel wasn't the prettiest, but Jessica kept her hopes up. Maybe it was beautiful on the inside. Everyone started getting off the boat. There was a gap between the Vaporetto and the street border and after Peter had stepped out, he offered his hand to help Jessica out.
She didn't even look at him. Now he was being a gentleman? He could have come to her rescue so she wouldn't have spent all the way there hearing Flash yabbering. She refused his help and used her powers to impulse herself out of the boat.
"Wow, she's so cool man." Flash commented in awe behind her. He then turned to Peter. "You could learn from her."
And to top it, the inside of the hotel was no better than the outside. The whole floor was flooded with canal water and only two more people besides the receptionist stood in the lobby.
"This place is sinking." Someone said.
"I think you mean charming." Mr Harrington tried to sound as optimist as possible, but that didn't work for anybody.
Mr Dell clapped his hands together to grasp everyone's attention. "Okay, everybody! Take your bags off. We're gonna meet at the Da Vinci museum at 3. Let's go!"
"Vámonos!"
"It's andiamo." MJ corrected Mr Harrington when he tried to speak Italian. She then walked next to Jessica. They both observed the floor disgusted. "This is not nice."
Against her own rules, Jessica decided to use her powers again and a second later, she and her friend were floating a few inches above the water. She got them to the third step of the stairs that communicated the lobby with the rooms, where the water no longer reached. MJ's smile rubbed off on Jessica.
"Jessica, please. If you could not use your superpowers while you're near to all the kids we are responsible for, you'd do us a favor." Mr Dell kindly told her. He had a fair argument.
"I don't want to get my feet wet." She pointed out.
"When you're in Rome, you do as the Romans do. When you're in Venice, your socks get wet."
