There was no time to point fingers at whose fault was it. Peter had screwed up bad. He had given EDITH to Mysterio, who had turned out to be lying. Jessica wanted to tell him 'I told you so' really bad, but she contained herself. The situation was terrible enough to start arguing.
Both teens hurried to get back to the hotel. They went straight up to Jessica's and MJ's room, where the heroine had left her armor. Peter carried his suit in his bag and tried to walk as fast as possible without it falling off his shoulder.
"MJ, we need your help." As soon as they got in, the girl left what she was doing to listen to the pair.
"What happened?"
Peter didn't try to hide his error. "I really messed up."
"Do you remember that thing you found in the street?" Jessica said as she changed into her suit. She wasn't ashamed to take off her clothes in front of her boyfriend and her best friend. Besides, everyone was far more concerned about the problem they had in their hands. "It basically gave away that Mysterio is a fake."
"And now our lives are in danger." Peter added, not helping much.
"What?"
"I can't believe you gave the glasses to Mysterio. He could be spying on us right now. He could send a strike on us if he wanted." Jessica glared at Peter once she was fully dressed in her black battle attire.
"We have to call Fury and tell him he's a fraud but I think he'd probably tap our phones." The boy reminded her, attempting to amend his mistake by helping with everything he could.
"And what are you gonna do now?" MJ asked.
"I get my suit and we go to Berlin." Peter answered her. "We need to talk to Mr. Fury in person."
Jessica had looked down for a moment to set up her bracelets and put them on, but when she looked up, she was surprised to find Peter half-naked and MJ looking away with a blushed face.
That was already awkward enough but it got even worse when they heard Ned clearing his throat from the door.
"Oh, Ned! Perfect!"
Ned didn't move an inch away from the door. "I don't know what you're doing, but don't count me in." He stepped backward. "I-I mean, if you're all into threesomes that's completely fine but-"
"Dude! I'm changing into my suit!"
Ned didn't understand why his friend would be putting on his superhero suit in front of MJ, who was supposed to be oblivious of his identity. "You mean the costume? For the costume party... at the castle?"
"She knows." Jessica cut him off before he could prolong his lie. "We told her."
"They didn't tell me, I figured it out." MJ proudly corrected them once again.
"Oh, that's cool." Ned nodded.
"Like, a long time ago."
Jessica stepped in to bring their main concern back at the center of the conversation again. "Look, Mysterio is a fraud."
"But he saved me and Betty's lives..."
"No, he's been faking the whole thing with illusion tech." She explained further.
"He's using, like, these hologram projectors." Peter took the projector, which they thought had to be part of a drone, and showed it to his friend.
"Wow, that's crazy..."
Then Peter pointed at him. "Ned, I need you to call May and get her to call Mr. Harrington and say that she wants me to stay with family in Berlin until we sort this out."
"Got it, easy." He simply said before frowning at Jessica. "But what about you, Jessica?"
"I'll be babysitting him to make sure he doesn't get lost." She glared at the hero now fully dressed in black. She opened the window and put the curtains aside. "We gotta go."
Peter jumped first, without saying a word, and Jessica was about to leave behind him when MJ stopped her. "Wait! Take the projector, you're gonna need it."
"Don't tell anyone about this, okay? Everyone who knows about this is in danger." Jessica told them after MJ handed her the drone part. She and Ned nodded. "Good. Stay safe."
The night was coming to an end and the first light of day was brightening up the sky when they made it to the train station. They stuck on top of a train headed to Berlin and waited. Neither of them said a word to each other on their journey to Germany. Peter would have wanted to, but because of the train's speed and the hard air coming against their ears, it would have been really uncomfortable. On the flip side, Jessica was fuming. She took advantage of the time they had on the train to ask FRIDAY whether she could hack into EDITH or not. Her intentions were to locate Beck and prevent him from causing any additional damage. However, FRIDAY told her that the EDITH system was a superior software and inaccessible from the outside. The silver lighting was that EDITH couldn't hack FRIDAY either since the latter was a personal and private AI system, out of EDITH's scope.
By the time they arrived in Germany, it was almost midday. They drew a bit of attention because of their black suits, and Peter even caused a few screams from people who mistook him with the Night Monkey. Their stealth suits did nothing in the light of day. Jessica thought about asking for direction to the Europol when a black Audi stopped before them.
The tinted window rolled down to reveal Fury in the driver's seat. "You've got a lot of explaining to do." He nodded at them, cueing them to get inside the car. Peter took the copilot seat while Jessica went for the backseat.
Fury's expression hinted that he knew about Mysterio and EDITH. Jessica observed how he was about to talk through the rear-view mirror.
Peter took off his mask as the car started moving again. "No, no! Listen!" He was quicker than Fury and stopped him before he could say anything.
"Wait until we're secured." The spy shut him up. Peter nodded but then Jessica noticed a nonstopping beeping sound. Fury cleared his throat at the fact that neither of them had their seatbelts on. Jessica swiftly got hers on but Peter broke his while attempting it.
The beeping continued all the way to the Europol offices. The building was huge, with clear white walls and glass doors. Every piece of furniture was also white. The teens followed Fury around the complex, still keeping their questions and comments to themselves. They went up some stairs, taking two steps at a time. Fury finally showed them to his office, all white and glass as well, where Hill was waiting for them behind a wide table.
"So, is there anything you want to tell us about your girlfriend?"
Peter and Jessica looked at each other with not a clue about what he meant.
"He's talking about EDITH." Hill clarified.
"Look, I know I made a mistake and I'm sorry but Mysterio is not who you think he is." Peter said.
"Beck is a liar. Mysterio, the elementals,... it's all fake." Jessica added when she saw the bafflement in their faces.
"He has some sort of illusion tech and that's how he tricked you guys and he tricked me into giving him EDITH."
Jessica took the projector off the hook of her belt and placed it in the large table in front of her. "That's a projector. It was pulled off after the fire monster attack."
"So all that death and destruction we witnessed was created by this?" Fury asked as he inspected the drone part. Jessica nodded at his question.
"Not just this, we think he's using drones."
"If this is true then Beck is really dangerous and we need to be smart." He stated. "Who else did you tell about this?"
Jessica didn't answer. She knew her friends were imperiled after they'd told them the circumstances. Once she told Fury, there would be no way back and their friends' security would be jeopardized. She looked at Peter, hoping for him to say their names to the agents before them, but he seemed to be focusing on something else.
"Parker?"
"What's wrong?" Jessica asked him after he stood quiet for a few more seconds.
"It's Beck." He said, alarmed. "He's here."
And as soon as he said that, the room they were in slowly started to vanish, revealing that it was just an illusion.
