"All right, I'm in position." Jessica reported as she scanned the square crowded with people in festive costumes. She pressed the button in the right side of her new stealth helmet and ran a scan of the view in front of her. The stealth suit was similar to the nano armor she had developed all those years ago. The main differences were that it was all matte black and the helmet was smaller, better adapting to the shape of her head. FRIDAY finally gave her the information about the total of people in the area, the average age and the proportion for gender. She ignored the latter two.
"Same over here." She heard Peter answer through her earpiece. She tried to spot him from the other side of the square. The stealth suits were working just great. She saw the white shape of the eyes of his suit contrasting the black sky, finding him at last. "As soon as we see something, Beck, we'll let you know."
"Roger that."
Then they heard Fury's voice. "How are the suits?"
"The suit's great. It's a little tight around the web-shooter."
"Peter!" Jessica called him down.
"Okay, I'll shut up."
Jessica looked down again, beginning her turn for the waiting game. She observed the carousel, the Ferris wheel and the people in the forum. Her gaze stopped at the fountain in front of her, as FRIDAY displayed a sign of unusual thermal activity. While she studied it and anticipated the monster's arrival, the system recognized a familiar face in the crowd.
MJ? Jessica thought to herself, distracting herself from the imminent attack.
"Jessica! Get out of there!" Peter screamed into the earpiece and right after the fountain was destroyed. The monster emerged in an explosion of fire and lava."Beck! Are you ready? You know what to do."
"On your lead, Spider-Man" Mysterio responded. Jessica jumped to the building beside her, moving away from the fire. The monster blew up the carnival stands around him and fed up with the burning wood, growing stronger.
Mysterio landed in front of it. "You're up, kid!" He shot his green lasers at the creature, immobilizing it for a moment.
Next, Jessica was ready to attack. Unlike in Venice, she actually did something when she used her powers against the monster. Her hit made a dent in its side, but it quickly filled in again. She pressed a button on the inside of her gloves and she started bathing the thing with a cooling spray. It was the same one Tony used to cool off the Hulk's arm after he snapped everyone back into existence. They thought they wouldn't need the spray again. But that turned out to be false.
"Nice technique! But try not to run out of that too soon!" She heard Mysterio congratulate her, but she didn't pay much attention. She was too busy looking at how the monster reacted to her attack. The cooling spray, although it had slowed it down for a second, had already melted off.
From the other side, Peter knocked off a fire-hydrant, trying to repeat the same effect. Since the water hit it constantly, it looked like it was working way better.
"Help!"
Jessica turned around as soon as she heard the cries for help coming from the Ferris wheel. She recognized Betty and Ned waving their arms at them. She immediately flew in their direction.
"Jessica? What's going on?"
"Please, help us!"
The Ferris wheel had stopped spinning, so everyone who was riding the attraction at the moment the monster arrived was trapped. It was too close to the monster and Jessica knew she had to do something about it to save them, even if it entailed jeopardizing the mission.
"Is that Spider-Man?" Betty asked when she saw Peter swinging around.
"What?" Ned exclaimed, providing an alibi for his friend. "No!"
"No, he's a European knock-off version of him."
Ned nodded at Jessica's line. "Yeah, I think he's like German or something."
Suddenly, the monster roared and rose only to fall on top of the carousel. He absorbed the fire it caused and increased in size. He was getting closer to the Ferris wheel and Peter needed help. "Jess!"
She saw the boy reaching the ground and she ran to him. "He's got the carousel! He's getting bigger!"
"Night monkey!" They both heard the screams coming from the Ferris wheel. "Night monkey!"
"What the..." A puzzled Spider-Man turned to Jessica for clarification.
"Ned and Betty are on the Ferris Wheel. We need to get them out."
"That's not part of the plan!" Jessica heard Fury loud and clear but decided to ignore him anyway.
Peter sided with her on this one. "I'll distract the monster! You get them out!"
She flew to the Ferris wheel once more to think about her options. Maybe she could move the entire structure away from that place, but being so big it would make it easier for the monster to get to the metal and strengthen from it. Unfortunately, it had reached the attraction and was beginning to fall. Jessica needed to move fast. She told Ned and Betty to hang on to her arms and flew them away from the scene. She had to repeat that operation with the other victims trapped. "Come on! I'm gonna get you out of here!"
When everybody was put in a safe place, Jessica went back to the square. The monster was about to absorb the Ferris wheel. She stood between the creature and the structure, ready to use her powers to prevent it from growing. However, she didn't see the stream of lava and fire coming towards her.
Thankfully, Peter was faster than the monster. The web-slinger swayed by her side and picked her up before she could get burned. He stuck himself to the wall of a building nearby from where they could see everything happen. The monster had gotten to the Ferris wheel.
"It's too late." Mysterio said into the earpiece. "Whatever happens... I'm glad we met."
"Beck, what are you doing?" Peter yelled as he watched the older hero fly towards the Elemental.
"What I should've done last time."
"Beck!" Peter yelped. Jessica watched the scene in silence. She wanted to see what he intended to do. "Don't do it!"
Mysterio shot his lasers at it while he flew straight into him, kamikaze style. The monster deintegrated in green smoke and Beck's body became visible where the creature stood seconds ago.
The teens approached the unconscious man. His fishbowl helmet was off, so they could perfectly see his dormant face. "Mr. Beck?" Peter shook him and he woke up. Jessica thought that his actions would have been more heroic if he'd actually died. "Oh, thank God."
Behind them, Fury and Hill had just got out of a black car. The woman was the first to ask. "So, it's over?"
"That was the last of them." Answered the one-eyed agent. "But not the last threat we'll ever face. We need to stay vigilant." He turned to face Mysterio. "There's a void in this world for someone like you. Hill and I are going to Europol headquarters in Berlin tomorrow. You should join us."
The man with the cape gave him a tired smile. "Thank you. I just might take you up on that."
Then, Fury slowly moved in Jessica's direction. His expression gave away that he wasn't going to wish her good.
"We had a plan!" He yelled, bringing up the fact that she had ignored him when he told her to leave the Ferris wheel alone. "When we have a plan, we stick to it! I thought Iron Man's daughter would have known that! You didn't even want to be here..." She couldn't keep the eye contact after he'd mention her adoptive father. He, however, continued. "He left you his legacy. You carry it with you. Are you going to live up to his name or are you only gonna use it for charity events?" That was when she looked back at him, now with tears and suppressed rage glowing in her eyes. "Stark chose you. He made you Avengers. I need that. The world needs that. Maybe Stark was wrong, was he? The choice is yours..."
He turned his back on her and addressed Peter as if nothing had happened. "You've got gifts, Parker. I'd love to have you in Berlin too."
Maybe she had just fought an elemental fire monster, but the hardest thing she had to do that night was to restrain herself from snapping back at Fury. Instead of doing that and most likely getting killed for it, she took off and left them all behind.
Peter watched her go from the ground and, after a moment of awkward silence, stepped forward. "I'm gonna go with her..."
"Hey, I think you should wait for a little before talking to her." Mysterio stopped him, advising him. "You know, let her calm down." Then he placed his hand on his shoulder and sympathetically smiled at him. "Let's get a drink."
