After her conversation with Beck, Jessica hovered over the city searching for Peter. She wanted to speak with him and apologize for leaving so abruptly, besides asking him why he called the drone strike on them. She finally found the boy bumping into a couple and unsuccessfully trying to say sorry to them.
"Scuzi! No- that's Italian." He told himself, still not habituated to the new city. Jessica landed a few feet away from him and ran in his direction to prevent him from getting further away.
"Peter!"
"Whoa." He jumped when he saw her. "Where did you come from?"
"What do you have your tingle for?"
"Please..." She knew he was about to ask her to not call it that. Jessica held her hands up trying to keep him silent so she could finally apologize.
"I just- I'm sorry I stormed off like that before." She truly was. Peter looked stunned by that. "I talked to that Beck guy - who I still don't trust, by the way - but he's right on this one. We've got a lot on our plates right now, and the last thing we need is to fight. So let's just keep things good between the two of us because-"
She was beginning to talk faster and faster before Peter kissed her to shut her up. He took her by the waist to pull her closer to him and, consequently, deepened the kiss. He had felt so relieved to hear what she just said, he couldn't keep back. He had messed up with this one but he wanted to prove her that wasn't going to happen it again.
When they pulled apart, Jessica was left speechless, only being capable to let out a giggle. "Wow." Peter rested his forehead against hers and smiled, enjoying the only moment they'd had to themselves on the whole trip. With no classmates, no elemental monsters, no Fury... He was going to kiss her again but this time she stopped him. "Why did you want to blow us off?"
"I didn't want to!" He pulled away. Jessica didn't say anything, cueing Peter to explain himself. "It's that- So, you know that Fury has made us new suits, right?" Jessica nodded. "Well, when we stopped on our way here, for the bathroom break, they wanted me to try mine to see if it fit. And there was this tall blonde woman and she had made the suit and she told me to take my clothes off to try it on."
Jessica didn't seem to find a reason in his story. "And you tried to kill us because...?"
"While I was trying the suit, Brad walked in and caught me half-naked with the blonde woman." Jessica's mouth dropped open. "He took a picture and threatened me with telling you."
"Peter..." She let out in almost a whisper. Peter tried to read her face and was taken aback when she started laughing. Like, properly laughing her ass off. He even had to look around to check if people were looking at them. "That's so stupid! I knew about the suits. And you had Fury and Hill to back you up with that story."
"I know! I'm sorry! I panicked."
"So, that's what Brad wanted to show to me." She wiped a few tears from all the laughter. Peter wasn't laughing at all. "Don't look at me like that, I find this really funny. Just try not to kill everybody the next time something like this happens."
He couldn't stop a smile from forming on his lips when the girl leaned in to kiss him again. She rested her hands at the back of his neck for support as she stood on her tiptoes. Peter tried to ignore the fact that she was still laughing when she broke the kiss. But the joy in her expression was starting to rub off on him.
"What can we do with the rest of the group while the attack takes place?" She asked, still holding on to him.
"Prague is famous for its operas." He answered, earning a strange look from his girlfriend. "I read it in an article on our way here."
"Oh, yeah, I remember." She laughed again, even though she really tried to contain herself. "The most romantic places in Prague."
Peter shrugged his shoulders with a wide grin. "It turned out to be useful."
. . .
"Good news." Mr. Harrington clapped his hands together when he saw that everybody had gathered around him in the hotel lobby. "We're going to the opera!"
He didn't get the reaction he had anticipated. Nobody seemed thrilled about it. Peter and Jessica shared an implicated look. That was easy since they were sharing a chair, or more like Peter was sitting in the chair and Jessica was sitting on top of him.
"Don't look at me." Mr. Dell didn't want to be associated with his colleague's decision.
A student in the group finally asked what everyone had been excited about. "What happened to the carnival?"
"Well, this is an upgrade, you guys." The teacher desperately tried to convince the teens. Ned, who was sitting on the floor close to Jessica and Peter, turned around to look at them confused. The pair just nodded at him, hinting him that he ought to agree to the opera plan. "Come on! The tour company just gave us these tickets for free! Do you have any idea how many opera tickets cost?"
"No, because none of us have ever wanted to go to the opera." Flash accurately pointed out. "Ever."
Ned was kind enough to help them with the plan. "Well, I think this is going to be culturally immersive for us."
"Thank you, Ned." Mr. Harrington expressed his gratitude but still, no one seemed to be willing to go.
"Yeah, I don't think we'll ever have another opportunity like this one." Jessica added. "It will be a once in a lifetime experience"
"Yes! Listen to Jessica. She's an Avenger. She knows what's good for you." The teacher said, adulating her like she was encouraging toddlers to eat their vegetables. "And she's right. This is gonna be, maybe, the best four hours of our whole trip."
"Four hours?!" Everyone exclaimed.
"Guys, I think this is going to be really fun, seriously."
. . .
"Hill could have given me another dress." Jessica complained as they made their way to the opera house. She hadn't packed a formal dress because she didn't think the occasion would come. So, the agents had a dress picked up for her but it was difficult to get it in and Jessica was positive that it was going to be as hard to get it out. She picked up a lint from the red skirt with one hand, having the other wrapped around Peter's arm. "Now I'll need to change into my suit and it's gonna slow me down." She was envious of Peter being able to wear his stealth suit underneath his formal suit.
"Well, I think you look good."
"If you think I look hot now, wait until you see me fighting that fire monster." Jessica hadn't look at him because she was readjusting her skirt since it was rather short. When she saw his expression, she understood the joke had been inappropriate. He was right. She shouldn't joke about that. "I'm sorry, I'm kidding. Thanks. You look pretty too."
The boy gave her a sweet kiss on the cheek, which turned a light shade of red, matching her dress.
Once they reached the opera house, they bumped into MJ, who they hadn't seen the whole evening. Her face slightly lighted up when she saw them. "Hi, I thought you'd got lost."
"Hi, MJ." Peter greeted her and then stared at the dress she was wearing. She usually didn't wear that type of clothes and Peter was startled to see her like that. He tried to find something to say to her. "Um... You look really pretty."
"And therefore I have value?" MJ asked in a very humorless tone. Jessica knew she was just messing with him and had to press her lips into a thin line to avoid bursting out in laughter.
"No! That's not what I meant at all."
"I'm kidding." MJ finally smiled, allowing Peter to breathe out in relieve. "You two look nice too."
"Thanks." Jessica answered before Ned and Betty walked past them, completely ignoring them. They looked too lovestruck to realize there were more people around them.
"Should we all sit together?" MJ suggested after the lovebirds had taken their seats. She didn't want to spend four hours of boring opera next to the couple.
Are you in position?
Just about the same time, Hill's voice resounded from their earpieces.
"No!" Peter answered to the spy, forgetting the curly-haired girl in front of him had just asked him a question.
"No?" She tilted her head, bewildered and a little bit hurt.
"Peter's a bit confused, I think he still has jetlag." Jessica covered for him. "Yeah, of course, we'll sit together. Why don't you go ahead? We'll be there in a minute."
Her friend nodded and left to get a seat. Jessica glared at Peter for almost screwing up, but before she could say anything, Hill talked again.
And what are you doing? Get in position!
"Yes! We're getting to it." Jessica responded this time. She wasn't going to complain to Hill. Jessica had still to change into her stealth suit. "C'mon, Pete." She saw how the boy stared at his friends. They were doing it again. Ditching everybody while they went on a mission. Jessica had grown used to it, after all, she'd had five years more of experience. Still, she could tell Peter had a great fear of missing out on his teenage years.
When she gazed over their classmates, Brad was about to sit next to MJ. Jessica was relieved that at least her friend wouldn't feel alone if she was with him. He waved at Jessica and she responded the same way. Then, she took Peter's hand to lead him out of the building. They couldn't afford to lose more time.
Peter started walking again after Brad gave him the middle finger.
"Are you leaving?"
They bumped into Ned, who had got up to get a pair of opera glasses, just before they could step out of the room.
"Yes." Peter answered his friend, trusting him to cover them. "Tell the rest we are sick or something."
"Okay! And guys," He stopped them again. "whatever you do, keep the monster away from your brows."
"Will do, Ned." Jessica nodded, not sure where that came from. "See you later."
