The deckhands at the bow, the sailors at the stern,

They long to catch a mermaid — her luscious love to earn. 

The captain at the helm, a secret in his chest —

He dreams of catching mermen, though he dares not confess.

He knows about the seaman-couples sentenced to detention

And Hasenbosch exiled to the Island of Ascension,

The sanctioned trials, strangulations, corpses burnt then tossed

Across Poseidon's oceans so that nameless graves are lost...
