Details.

Gentlemen! Based on comments I've received, women love details about the people in your books far more than details about... well, anything else. So don't bother with two paragraphs describing a lawnmower, no matter how bitchin' it is!

Men discussing a woman's appearance with other men is very simplistic. We use units of measures such as bra cup, height, waist and hip measurement, weight, age, and the (much despised by women) 1-10 rating. Throw in the hair color and ethnicity, and we get a pretty complete picture.

Women tend to want a greater amount of less clinical information, as appearance plays a much greater part of their identities than men.

Look at the photo up top. There are numerous things to mention. Note that not everything has to be flattering.
1. Smooth olive skin.
2. A long, graceful neck.
3. Thin, well shaped lips.
4. Nearly perfect teeth, not overly bright.
5. A cheerful, not sexy smile.
5. Rounded cheeks.
4. A somewhat mannish chin.
5. An unremarkable, straight nose.
6. A prominent dimple.

The dimple is the most notable feature, so you can dive deeper. Does she have dimples on both sides? Is it present all the time or only when she smiles or forms other expressions?

There are at least five paragraphs worth of ways to describe this woman's face, and we haven't even gotten to her eyes and hair!

Other important details to include are hands. Are the fingers thick or thin? Delicate or strong. Smooth or calloused and scarred? How long are the nails, and what color are they painted?

Clothing and shoes also should not be skimped on. Not just colors and styles, but how they fit on her. What they show and hide. What they emphasize or flatter. How they show her personality. (I had a fling with a woman who mixed tight animal print pants and tops, because she claimed to be both predator and prey. Her outfits were fun to write about! )

When appropriate, the look and feel of more intimate areas can also be... tastefully... described. State of grooming (or lack thereof) seems to be particularly appreciated.

My favorite tactic in describing a woman is focusing on how I reacted to each part of her, to make it more personal.

Examples: "Her sultry greenish brown gaze stiffened me." Or,  "Her ass and waist were mostly hidden by the thick denim skirt and deep red silk blouse, so my attention went to Alice's spectacular mane of dark brown hair, which cascaded just past her level shoulders. For nearly a year I had watched her leave for work in the morning with a glistening ponytail or a loose flow of thick, slightly wavy, bouncing locks. However, just like on our first date, Alice had teased it out in the big 1980's style. A strong spring breeze danced her hair around like a model's on a photo shoot. With her boot heels and billowing hair, Alice almost matched my six-foot height, making her a true head-turner."

What are some other things you enjoy describing or seeing described?
