CHAPTER 5 : Lost Memory
UNCLE : Are you awake?
I managed to move although I was very weak and my muscles, stiff from the long unconsciousness my body had suffered.
In a few hours as I regained the abilities to move, a nurse helped me sit leaning to the inclined bed and I noticed that she wasn't Korean. I felt my head heavier and captive only to feel a hard plaster wrapped around when I tried to touch it.
UNCLE : Can you recognize me?
ME : (-raw voice-) Why are you asking that Uncle? Of course, I remember you.
UNCLE : (-smiles-) How do you feel now?
ME : (-slight nod-) Good. My head hurts a little. But, for how long was I unconscious?
UNCLE : Almost 3 months now. You had a serious head injury. (-upset-)
ME : Ah, is it? But, what happened? Why are you sad?
UNCLE : We couldn't save your child.
ME : (-confused-) My child? I had a child?
UNCLE : (-looking up at me with wide eyes-) Don't you remember?
Before I could say anything, someone interrupted us as he entered the room. A well built figure having a foreign touch to his ethnicity, who wore a noticeable white coat with innumerable pens tucked in its chest pocket. A Doctor, I could discern as he walked to me with his hands burried in his coat pockets.
DOCTOR : I am Dr. Mike. The one in charge of you. Are you sore anywhere?
ME : My head hurts a little but I am unable follow what my Uncle is saying. I don't remember such a thing.
Dr. MIKE : (-casually checking my vitals-) Well, I guess it was right. You don't remember anything because you probably had a memory loss which may come back in a few days or may never do. Can you tell me, what is the last thing you remember happening?
I thought hard and my head instantly started to hurt even more as I pressurised my brain to recall. Though the pain never stopped, I remembered something.
ME : I had breakfast with Uncle at home as usual and was leaving for the school where I work. (-looking up at the doctor with teary eyes-) But, I can't remember anything after that. It's just so vague. (-freaking out-) What's happening to me?!
Dr. MIKE : Please, calm down. It's alright. (-slight pause-) Don't stress your brain. It's all gonna be fine. (-in a calm tone-) Does your head hurt really bad?
I nodded slightly trying to contain my tears and he instructed the nurse accordingly.
Dr. MIKE : (-caringly-) Don't stress or panic about anything. Everything's fine. I have given you an analgesic for the pain. You will be just fine.
ME : (-nods assured-) Thank you, Doctor.
Dr. MIKE : (-smiles-) No problem. Now, rest well.
He left making sure I was fine and the nurse handed me the medicine he prescribed me earlier. I calmed down as my headache gradually started to fade.
ME : Uncle Jang. Where are we? This isn't Korea, right?
I saw him lost in his thoughts so, I asked him again gaining his attention this time.
UNCLE : Onh? Yeah, we are in America currently.
ME : And what about my child? Where is my husband then? Can you please tell me, what happened to them? (-worried-)
UNCLE : (-taking my hand in his-) Jae Ra-ya. You had a very bad accident in Korea where you lost the child, you were pregnant with. And your husband, (-sighs-) your husband is a jerk. He just left you to die alone.
Tears filled my eyes at the sudden loss of family that I had no memories or remembrance of.
UNCLE : (-continues-) Later, I brought you here for your treatment.
ME : (-tears rolling-) W-who is he? What is his name? Why did he-...
I burst out into a sob as I could recall absolutely nothing about the man I had married to spend the rest of my life with.
UNCLE : Don't cry Jae Ra-ya. Don't cry over that scumbag! It's good that you don't remember him. It's for the best. (-slight pause with a sigh following-) I went to him to accept you back, but he just threw the divorce papers on my face after signing it.
I felt even worse to learn how badly he treated my Uncle, an elder.
ME : Why did I even get married to him?
UNCLE : He just used you, honey.
I was wretched, unable to stifle my tears in- completely grief-stricken. My morale constantly ate on me for crying over someone as black-hearted and scornful as my husband. Uncle stood up and hugged me in a gesture of comfort and patted my back gently.
UNCLE : Don't cry Jae Ra-ya. (-in tears-)
However, my heart's negating any disgrace I felt for my husband baffled me so much that I no longer knew the meaning each shedding tear carried, as they slid down my cheeks.
In a while, stabilizing myself again, I noticed Uncle in a deep concern as he rested on the sofa.
ME : Uncle.
UNCLE : Yes, dear? (-looking at me-)
ME : Are you okay?
UNCLE : (-smiles-) I am fine. (-after a while-) Jae Ra-ya, I'll come back with some snacks. You watch TV until then (-switching on the TV-). Take care. I am coming, okay?
I slightly nodded, my plasters not allowing much movement.
As he left, I took the remote and changed the channels randomly until something caught my attention. A news channel showing international affairs intrigued me a little about their content.
They were reporting about BTS's member, Kim Taehyung. I kept the remote aside to watch it- Kpop being my interest and the only familiar aspect in a foreign country.
-On the TV-
News Anchor : Let's move to our next topic which is having tremendous views by the people of Korea and their ARMYs all over the world. It's BTS Kim Taehyung announcing about being secretly married to one of the Korea's top business men, Jung Min Chul's daughter, Jung Ji hae.
"Wow, she's so pretty!" I exclaimed to myself, dazzled by her visuals.
NEWS ANCHOR : (-continues-) After one year of secrecy, the couple finally decided to make it official with the birth of their son, Kim Jae Hyung. A recent post of Taehyung with his son is going viral in the social media world. Fans are showering their immense love for the father-son bond. Here is the Twitter post by the singer.
A picture popped up on the screen which brought a smile on my lips and awed my heart. They looked very adorable and precious together.
My eyes were wet in pure gay seeing the vehemence of tenderness in his eyes for his son.
I quickly turned off the TV at the sudden recollection of Uncle's words about my husband earlier.
Glaring at the divorce papers beside my bed that were left by Uncle a while ago, I fetched it stone faced with the maximum movement I was allowed.
I was so totally wrecked and gashed to know that he left me just for nothing, that I took a pen and signed the papers without a second thought. My eyes inevitably fell on his name that I was deliberately trying to avoid.
ME : "Kim Tae hyung". (-unamused chuckle-) How can people with the same name be so different? I guess it's absurd for me to even consider you having a little of V(bts)'s benevolence. (-looking at the signed papers-)
My heart sunk as I felt to be missing out on something very important to me. I hated the fact that I couldn't remember any of it, no matter how hard I tried.
Extremely frustrated, I attempted to recall even just a glimpse of anything and suddenly a indistinct accident scenario flashed back in my mind where a heavy truck dangerously neared our car.
The crashing sounds resonated in my ears and deafened me in the tranquil atmosphere, ironically.
My head started to hurt more than it was before. I screamed cupping my plastered head, the most my hands could cover, at the unendurable pain.
The last scene I saw was the door open, revealing Uncle before my vision became hazy and I blacked out.
________
Note : Park Ji Yeon of T-ara is not his wife. I am just using her face for my fictional character Jung Ji Hae. In the ff, she is not any idol or actress but only Taehyung's current wife.
Anyways, did you like the chapter ?
