3. The Nurse's Office
Nekomai woke up staring at bright lights and a white ceiling. She flinched.
"OH MY GOD YOURE ALRIGHT I THOUGHT YOU HAD DIED!" Aphmau sobbed, her eyes already puffy and red as though she were crying before.
Nekomai sat up, and her head spun.
"Lady Aphmau, where am I?"
"The nurse's office." Aaron responded from the other side of Nekomai. "Do you remember what happened?"
"I...."
Nekomai couldn't, and her eyes welled up with tears.
"I don't."
"That's alright! What matters is you're safe now!" Aphmau smiled.
Nekomai was still trying to remember. Think, think!!
"Gene..."
"Has a black eye."
Nekomai stared at Aaron, who stared back.
".....Thank you." She smiled.
Aaron knit his brows together, and shot Aphmau a look.
"You're... welcome??"
Nekomai noticed his bruised and split knuckles, and gently brushed them with her fingertips.
"You should bandage these." She pointed out. "They'll get infected."
"Ah.... I'll keep that in mind."
Aaron immediately perked up and looked towards the door expectantly, staring for a few minutes before the two girls looked as well as it opened.
"Nekomai!" Erebus gasped, and ran forward to hug her. He picked up his little sister like she were a doll, and swung her around as such too.
She laughed and giggled, her worries melting away because Erebus had come back!
She held on tightly to him and he refused to let go of her, and heard him speak to the other two, but her ears pressing down on her head caused his words to be muffled.
"Nekomai, I'm going to take you home now."
"Okay!"
Nekomai grabbed her backpack and lunch box, and stared at Aaron and Aphmau.
They looked at each other, and back at her, then to Erebus.
"Nekomai..... they can't come with us."
".....Oh."
"We'll see you tomorrow though!" Aphmau cheered.
"Yeah. Maybe we can eat lunch together or something." Aaron offered.
Nekomai smiled, and hugged the two, before taking Erebus' hand and waving them goodbye.
The other students cast glances at her, and she slowed down, fumbling for her pills, before Erebus gave her a reassuring squeeze.
"It's just a hallway." He nodded, "There's nothing to be scared of here."
She sighed, reassured, before shutting her eyes tight against against the bright sunlight. Erebus handed her her favorite pair of heart shaped sunglasses, and she gladly put them on.
"I have work from the rest of your classes, okay? We'll figure it out at home together."
"Okay!!"
Erebus smiled kindly, and fished for his keys in his pocket while Nekomai rocked back and forth on her heels.
"Hey Erebus, Can we go to the park after dinner?? I wanna go swinging again."
"Sure, Pipsqueak."
Erebus started the car, and Nekomai clobbered into the backseat, making sure her floral seat cover was comfortably placed over her before she turned her head to look out the window.
She caught a glimpse of Gene, and her tail twacked onto the seat next to her, causing Erebus to slow the car to a stop and look at her.
"What?"
"Hm? What?"
Nekomai frowned, and stared at him in the mirror. After a few minutes of staring, the car began moving again.
"You missed lunch, didn't you?"
"I.... think I did."
"Alright, that's fine. I'll make you something at home."
Nekomai thought until they reached a stoplight, before jumping in her seat.
"Noodles!!!"
"Alright, alright, I'll make you noodles."
When they pulled up to the white house with the yellow trim, Nekomai couldn't wait to unbuckle. She raced to the front door and bounced on her toes as Erebus unlocked it.
"Don't get too excited, Chisana."
Nekomai bounced into the home, before frowning.
"I am not tiny!!"
Erebus looked down at her for a moment, before shaking his head with a smile.
"Alright, Sure."
The two took off their shoes in sync, and put on their slippers as they headed for the kitchen.
"Noodles noodles noddles noodles noodles noodles noodles." Nekomai murmured, staring at the array of cabinets. She had forgotten which one held the noodles.
Erebus reached up into one, and pulled down two bowls.
"Is instant okay??"
"Noodles!" Nekomai agreed, bouncing. "I'm gonna go change!"
"Aright, when you come back we'll take a look at your homework."
Nekomai rushed up the stairs and bounced down the hall, flinging open the door with all the cute stickers on it.
She sat down at her vanity, and took out her pigtails, shaking her hair and brushing through it before leaving it loose.
Standing up, she walked on the light purple carpet to the closet, where she slid through outfits until she decided on a much more comfortable skirt and sweater.
She glanced at her computer, and contemplated playing one of her games, before shaking the thought from her head.
"No, Erebus said to go back downstairs." She scolded, and then smiled because she had remembered something.
She bounced back downstairs, and by then lunch was ready. Taking her place at the table, she frowned at the immense amount of schoolwork.
"Don't worry," Erebus smiled as he placed a bowl in front of her, "A lot of it is just introduction notes and the likes. It's pretty easy, Ready to try it?"
And then Nekomai smiled because she liked when things were easy.
"Yes!!"
