prologue
Reminiscing
RAVEN JUMPED ONTO THE COUCH BESIDE HER mother, who had now been spending all her time beside the fireplace. She knew that something bad was happening to the woman, but, her parents had yet to share what was really going on. Still, part of Raven enjoyed having both Avalon and Remus home more, even if that home was now a tiny cabin in the woods rather than their Yorkshire cottage.
"You look beautiful, Mama." Raven spoke with a bright and beautiful smile.
"Thank you, darling." Avalon responded, pressing a kiss against the young girls forehead, pulling the child closer to her as she watched the fire.
"You get your looks from your mother." Remus laughed as he entered the room from the small kitchen, a tray of tea and snacks in hand. "I've loved her since the day we met."
"Rubbish, you hated me." The Jennings-Lupin woman laughed, a cough escaping her lips once she had strained her body too much. She glanced between her husband, and daughter, then tried to brush it off as if it never happened. "Your father yanked one of my pigtails our first day of Hogwarts together."
Remus laughed as he set the tray down, his wife carefully taking her teacup in hand, "I do agree, I could have been a bit more gentle with my approach."
"So, when did you fall for each other?" Raven's eyes widened in awe, curious to know more about how her parents, who were so deeply in love.
"I was on the ground the minute I met her, your mother however, needed a few years to melt her ice." The Lupin man explained, sitting on the ground near the fireplace, allowing his wife and daughter to take up all the room on the couch.
"Ice, hm?" Avalon's eyebrow raised, practically hitting the top of her forehead. "I beg to differ, I just was not a fan of your fathers friends at the time."
The woman reached out and took her husbands hand into her own, knowing her honesty would bring up somewhat of a mixed feeling in him, seeing as the "friend" she despised most had died many years ago.
"We all heavily disagreed on what a real Gryffindor should act like, all of us fought about it for years." Avalon shrugged, "of course, I always won the more intellectual battles and that was enough for me."
"Until James pulled out his pranks." Remus let out a wistful sigh, the smile on his face faint but, there.
"... and Rem was always there to apologize to me after him." The Lupin woman shrugged. "I couldn't help but admire him for that."
"Then, one summer, I sent Lonny a letter, making a real apology and confessing my feelings." The man leaned over, and sipped on his tea. "The rest was history."
"Tell me more." Raven suggested with a yawn, the girl laying her head in her mothers lap.
The Lupin parents exchanged a look, one that held a conversation amongst themselves.
"Alright, every night before bed, we'll tell you little pieces of our story, darling." Remus promised, getting more comfortable in his place. "Where shall we start?"
"The start of 5th year, of course." Avalon responded, coughing into her sleeve repeatedly.
Her husband was worried but, once the cough settled, he took a deep breath and began to speak.
"Very well... it all started fifth year."
