07. Did She Know?

SEVEN DID SHE KNOW?

◥✥◤

"Date rape drug, Teddy's strong enough to not need it, but that doesn't mean he didn't use it," Hotchner was mumbling to himself as they looked at their bulletin board, "Anything that caused Theodore to blackout would be well out of his system right now, they should have tested his blood the moment he said he blacked out. Stupid police wanted an easy case."

"When have we ever worked with a competent police department, Hotch?" Emily Prentiss mused from her seat as she looked over the file. "This toxicology report could be what we need to prove Theodore didn't do it."

"Guys, guys," JJ came running into the room, a lock of blonde hair had fallen out of her perfect ponytail as her sleeves were rolled up. She looked out of breath like she had been running. "Good news. Sort of. Thanks to the toxicology report, they've opened up to the idea that it might not be Theodore. So, this is officially an open investigation, and charges against Mr. Baldwin have been temporarily dropped he's just not allowed to leave town."

Spencer looked up at this, his expression unreadable, "Where is he now?"

"In the lobby, talking to his niece and the mom of the friend she was staying with," the woman explained, motioning out the door. "If you wanna go talk to him, you can, I know you two were friends."

"Don't be too friendly or else the detectives might want you off the case, Reid," Hotchner reminded with a stern glance and Spencer nodded as he stood up from his seat.

Walking outside, there was Teddy who looked absolutely exhausted. He had one hand around his niece's shoulders as he was talking to Annika's mother with a smile on his face. He seemed more relieved than happy, but it was a smile nonetheless.

"Spence!" Teddy exclaimed as soon as he saw the man come out of the office. Spencer wanted to hug him, but that might not be the best idea in the middle of a police precinct so they opted for a firm handshake instead. "Thank you. I couldn't have gotten off without you."

"Without me!" Tensley reminded with a scoff, crossing her arms.

"You're not free yet, you're just not being charged with murder," Spencer corrected even though he probably shouldn't ruin the good mood, "At the very least you'll be treated as a hostile witness, but these people are convinced you did it. I'm convinced they just want an easy case because the last thing anyone wants in a small town like this is a murderer on the loose."

Despite everyone else's disapproving reactions, Theodore just smiled and shook his head, "You always know how to brighten up a room, Spencer. Never change."

"At this point, I don't think I will," he retorted with a smile. Aside from the horrifying context of his friend being accused of murder, it really was good to see him again. Half the time, Teddy was the reason Spencer avoided being beat to a pulp. Teddy had seemed so much older then, so much more powerful. Now, they were almost eye to eye. He still had the same caring glint in his eyes as he did then.

"If Tensley is okay to stay here in town with you, I can head on home," Annika's mother that Spencer never got the name of interrupted the conversation, "Uh, she's good to stay with him, right, Agent?"

Spencer nodded, "Since he's not facing any charges and he's still her legal guardian, yeah that should be fine. Do you want us to call you if anything changes?"

The woman sighed a breath of relief, "Yes, I'll be happy to care for Tensley if anything were to happen which --" she quickly shot a glance over to Teddy, "-- I certainly hope doesn't happen. Still, you know I'll always be here for you guys whenever you need me, Teddy."

"Of course, Marie, thank you for everything," Teddy responded as he pulled the woman into a hug. With that, she offered a tense smile to Spencer, a forehead kiss to Tensley, and she was gone.

As soon as she was gone, Teddy cleared his throat, "Uh, Spence, can I speak to you alone?"

Tensley looked offended at this, but scoffed and went to take a seat as she started playing on her phone. Not wanting to draw attention to themselves, they stood in the same room, just speaking in low whispers as Teddy asked, "Listen, what I... admitted in the interrogation, don't let Tens catch wind of it, please? I-It's stupid, but she doesn't know about the whole stupid high school love triangle with Jameson and Wren and I don't want it to stress her out. I know her and if she finds out then she'll start going crazy and accusing Wren --"

"You don't think Wren did this? She's the one who tried to have you put away, we've been treating her as a suspect," Spencer admitted, "I won't tell Tensley, by the way, it's only mildly important to the investigation. It really just depends on whether or not Wren knew about... uh, about how you felt for Jameson."

"I don't think Wren has the power to do this," Teddy shook his head, his voice seeming rough but he was probably just dehydrated and stressed out, "I mean, her husband just died, she's probably confused and pointing fingers. But she was my friend, too, not just his wife. She wouldn't do this to me, we were like family."

Spencer didn't believe this. There were two suspects. One was being cleared while trying to clear the other so someone was lying. Spencer didn't want to believe it was Teddy, but he couldn't rule out the possibility until there were more suspects.

"You never answered my question, I'm afraid we were interrupted before you could," the agent changed the course of the conversation because he knew the answer to this question could determine if Wren really had the motive to kill Jameson and put Teddy away for it. "Did she know?"

Teddy hesitated, his expression tensing up as he avoided Spencer's eyes. It was almost as if he knew his answer was going to be damning either way. Spencer couldn't blame him, Teddy must really believe she was innocent.

After a moment, Teddy finally met his eyes, nodding as he answered, "She knew. She always knew."

Spencer considered this and he knew it was going to be something he had to tell his team. This gave her the motive to frame Teddy. Even then, it was almost too perfect. "Then she's still a suspect."
