06. You Loved Him
SIX YOU LOVED HIM
◥✥◤
WINTER PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT.
The Next Day
Spencer Reid had aged since Teddy has last seen him. They graduated high school together, but Spencer had been six years younger than him. He was a kid, they both were, just in different senses of the word. Teddy had been destined to end up exactly where he had -- nothing more than a mechanic in a small town. Leaving Las Vegas was the best thing that ever happened to him, but it wasn't like he amounted to much. He always knew Spencer was going to do great things, though. The kid never believed it, but Teddy always knew. Teddy had always been large, bulky. He looked like the type of kid that bullied Spencer, but he never was. He always kept the boy safe, he felt he owed it to him. He never knew why. He had heard from Spencer very rarely since their time in high school. The last time he spoke to Spencer, he had been going into his FBI training. He never thought that when he saw Spencer Reid again, it was going to be on opposite sides.
"What are you doing here?" was the first question that left his mouth. His hands were handcuffed to the table and his wrists ached. His throat was dry. They had been giving him water, they had to, but it wasn't enough. "I thought you solved cold cases and all that shit. This one is pretty lock and key."
"Not if you didn't do it, but I don't think you did," Spencer remarked. His hands were fidgeting against the cool metal table. He still spoke in that tense, pointed way he had since they were younger. It was nice to know he hasn't changed too much. "It's good to see you, Theodore, I wish it was under better circumstances."
Teddy grunted, "Theodore. Who are you? C'mon, it's Teddy. It was always Teddy for you."
"My team has advised me against treating you like an old friend," Spencer explained, "Just in case. They're watching us now. Well, some of them. I told them I wouldn't lie to you, though."
"And why is that?" his voice was too sarcastic for his own good. His head ached and his hands itched to rub his temples, but he could do no such thing. He was irritated, rightfully so. He figured he was allowed to be in a mood considering he was being framed for murder.
Spencer hesitated, shooting a nervous glance to the mirror that covered the wall behind him. "Because you deserve to know that someone believes you when you say you didn't do it. My team believes you too, for the most part. Tensley does, too."
Teddy perked up at the mention of his niece, "You've spoken to Tensley? Where is she? She's still staying with Annie, right?"
"She's here, actually," Spencer explained and Teddy tensed up at this. He didn't want Tensley to have to deal with this. "She's the one who wrote me and helped get my team on the case. Very brave girl you've raised."
"That's all her," the man scoffed, "She is her mother's daughter. My sister always had such a tenacity about her, she always got what she wanted no matter what it took. Some thought she was bratty, I thought she was amazing. I wish Tensley got to meet her like that... got to remember her before addiction ate her alive. She's okay, though?"
Spencer nodded, his expression solemn, "Yes, she's okay. I have to ask, and I know you've been asked this before, but what's the last thing you remember before waking up in the woods?"
"There was an old cabin we used to explore. You remember when he and I used to visit Colorado during breaks when Jamesons's dad lived up there? Yeah, they moved into his old house after they got married, kept it in the family. Anyway, we were chatting and we wanted to see if it was still up or if it had finally fallen to pieces so we headed off down the old path and... and next thing I knew I was waking up. You know the rest," Teddy explained, his voice strained as he struggled to recall the events. He wanted so badly just to remember he had to know what happened.
"We're waiting for a toxicology report on Jameson to see if maybe he was drugged," the man across from him explained, "If he was, we're going to broaden our idea of who the unsub is. Right now all we know was that he was knocked out from brute force. You realize that you are someone who could easily overpower him, I assume. So, you know how this looks."
Teddy nodded slowly, "I do. You know me. You know me, Spence. Jameson and I... we were so close. I haven't even had time to grieve my best friend because I'm busy being arrested for murder. Can you imagine how that feels? I've been crying every fucking night since I was arrested because I can't believe someone would do this to him. He... he--"
"You loved him, didn't you?" Something seemed to click in Spencer's mind as he looked over at Teddy whose eyes were filling with tears. "Since high school."
The room was tense and Teddy was aware they were being watched. He swallowed, his throat thick with emotion and he felt like he was suffocating. It was only him and Spencer in this room, but he felt like he was getting trampled. Cautiously, he nodded, "I did. I do. It was always him, but he chose her. I was okay with that, I've been okay with that. I came to terms with it when we were seventeen. I'm not going to kill my best friend over some stupid pent up love affair."
"Did he know?" Spencer's expression was soft and Teddy had no idea if this was good or bad for the case. Admitting he had been in love with Jameson for twenty years probably wouldn't boost his character considering they could easily paint this into some gay predator schtick. Of course, it would go that direction, he could see the headlines now. Hesitantly, Teddy nodded. Spencer considered this. "Did Wren know?"
Before Teddy could answer, the door burst open. Into the room came a tall blonde woman, her straight hair down past her shoulders against the black shirt she wore with the sleeves rolled up. She nodded to Spencer as she slapped a file down on the table.
"What's this?"
"Interrogation's over for now," the woman spoke tensely as Spencer looked over the file. She turned to Teddy, "Toxicology report came back. There was flunitrazepam in his blood."
"A date rape drug," Spencer muttered as he looked over the results. He looked at the other agent and Teddy's mind raced as he considered what this could mean for the case. "We need to talk. Teddy... we'll get back to this later."
The man stood and Teddy would have to wait for one of the police officers to come and release him. "Hey, Spence," he got the man's attention before he left the room. He forced a small smile onto his face, "It was good to see you."
