Part 27: When you lose a loved one...

The beginning of this is a bunch of flashbacks just so you know. When it says flash that means it switched to another memory. Ok anyway into the story. Also idk if you guys will feel the same but writing this chapter hit me hard with the feels, so prepare.

"Without you... All I ever am... Is empty..."

"(Y/n), did you eat all of your breakfast?" The kind, sweet, and familiar voice asked.

"Yes mama! It was very good thank you so much for cooking it for me." I smiled brightly up at her tall thin frame.

"Your welcome, my little girl." She then walked over to the food cupboard. "Hm... We're running out of some supplies. I may need to go into town today."

"Oow can I go with you?! Please mama, I wanna go." I hopped out of my chair anxiously. Our house was kind of far away from practically anything, besides our one set of neighbors, so going into town was a real treat.

"And leave your father here all alone with Joseph? I don't know if those two could function without us powerful woman around to tell them how to do things right." My mother smiled jokingly with a small wink. "Are you sure you should leave him here?"

"He can do it for one day." I replied grabbing her soft and warm hand. "Please mommy I wanna spend today with you."

Her smile turned from teasing to loving, and she kneeled to my level petting the top of my head gently. "Than of course you can come along."

Flash

It was after my first day of school and I was finally calming down after all the new things I had experienced earlier that day. I fixed the hat on my head so that I couldn't feel the wet snow falling into my head. It was almost always snowing where we lived. There were only a few months of nice weather that we often had for summer. It was enough time to grow and harvest crops, but then very soon after the weather would get cold once again.

I buttoned the top button of my coat and when I looked up I saw my mother waiting for me. "Mama!" I giggled running to her.

"Hello my little girl!" She caught me, wrapping her arm around me and giving me a kiss in the side of my cheek. "I missed you so much at home today." She then stood and took my hand in her's as we walked. "Did you have fun?"

"Yes I met a lot of  people, my teacher's really nice, and she taught me more about how the read and write." I rambled on. "Oh but don't worry mama you'll always be my favoritest- oops I mean, favorite teacher."

She laughed. "You are such a perfect little daughter."

I broke out in giggles as she scooped me up and swung me around a bit in her arms.

"Joseph, where is mama and father?" I asked my mothers childhood friend who say across from me at the dinner table. He had prepared dinner for me tonight. Of course it was never as good as my mother's, but he always tried so I appreciated it.

"Your father had an important dinner for his work, and your mother just so happened to be invited to, so I'll be watching you tonight kiddo." He replied.

"Oh... Well ok." Joseph was always a very kind person. He was I guess somewhat of an uncle to me. Although sometimes he wasn't a great person to have a conversation with. Well for a six year old that is. "Joseph?"

"Yes?" He asked after swallowing his food.

"The people at school think it's strange that you live here with us. They say that it's supposed to be the mom and the dad and then the kids living all in a house together as one big happy family, and that anyone else being there is just... not right." I explained with a frown. "But... I told them that's not true. Because you are a part of the big happy family. Without you here it would just be... well... not right. Right?"

He chucked a bit and a rare warm smile formed across his lips. He reached over the table and ruffled my hair. "I swear you're getting more and more like your mother every day... Never afraid to stand up for what you believe in..." He pulled his hand away and gave me a serious look. "Now you listen to me, cause I'll only say this once. Don't ever let someone tell you how you should or shouldn't be. You follow your own path, you do what you want, and you have your own dreams. People will tell you you have to be a certain way, or follow a certain destiny. Well you know what? Screw destiny! You follow what your heart wants. Never let all those other people get in you way. Got it?"

"Got it!" I nodded with a fake salute and my usual happy grin. However my grin soon faded. "But why are people that way? Why do they think I'm so... strange?"

He sighed. "(Y/n) they say that because people are afraid of anything that is different. Being strange is not a bad thing. If anything it's a good thing. It shows that you aren't afraid to be yourself, and you aren't afraid to be happy."

"But... what if being myself leaves me all alone?" I asked my slight smile now turning into a frown.

"You silly girl, I thought you were smarter than that." He shook his head. "You'll never truly be alone. After all I'm here, right?"

I felt the smile return to my face. "Right!"

Flash

I had been ripped away from my mother, and she was gone now. "Joseph?!" I called out for him as I lay over my father's freshly dead body. I knew that the chances of out family's dearest friend being alive were slim.

The men dragged me away screaming and crying....

Flash

Finally. I had finally been set free from that terrible place. It has been a month and I have finally gotten a chance to talk to one of the higher-ups on the magic council.

"Please you have to tell me!" I begged as I stood from my chair in the front of the man's desk, and put my hands onto it. "Is there any sign that my mother is still alive?"

"I'm sorry miss but as I said before there are none." He replied patiently.

My shaky hands clutched the edge of his desk as I tried to keep it together. I looked down letting my hair cover my face. I finally managed to get the next sentence out in a small voice. "What about Joseph?"

"Look miss, I'm sorry I really am, but there is just no evidence that anyone survived the attack. We closed the case a long time ago, it would take a miracle for them to have made it." He stood up, and grabbed his things. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have other appointments I have to get to." He walked out.

A vision of my mother's sweet smiling face flashed in my mind as the door clicked shut behind me. The tears finally broke free and streamed down my face as the realization finally hit me fully.

They're gone....

Flash ok we are back to the present time now.

I opened my eyes blinking a few times before slowly sitting up in my bed and looking around.

Thats right I felt bad for staying at levy's so long so I had decided to go apartment hunting tomorrow. I'm I'm a hotel with Lyon, but he's in a separate room.

I had dreamed... About my past again. "Mother..." I placed my hands to my heart as the feeling of emptiness I had felt grew tremendously.

I finally understand... this feeling I have... I miss her... I miss the feeling of her warm hand, and her arms around me. I miss her sweet smile, and when she called me her little girl with so much love and care. And Joseph, my father, I miss them all so much... And there's nothing I can do to stop it.

I bit my lip and whimpered quietly as tears rolled down my cheeks. The empty feeling hurt... It hurt so bad. It was like a black hole just sucking away my happiness, and I couldn't take it. I continued to cry quietly.

I heard the door to my left open, but didn't look over. I knew who it was.

"(Y/n)?"Lyon asked drowsily. Once he saw me crying he quickly moved over, and sat in front of me, grabbing my hands. "What's wrong?"

"I... miss her.... my mother." I managed to say through choking back sobs.

"(Y/n)..." He trailed off pulling me into his lap and hugging me tightly to his chest. "Shh... Please don't cry." He murmured lovingly and ran a hand through my hair. "She wouldn't want you to cry."

My cries reduced to small sniffling as I realized he was right.

He pushed me away only slightly so he could look at my face. He then kissed away my tears before giving me a sweet kiss in the lips. "She would want you to smile."

A bittersweet smile pulled at my lips as I felt the warm feeling once again. I finally realized what that feeling was. It was his love. He gave me one last kiss before once again pulling me down into his embrace.

His love... That's what had always filled the emptiness. He always made me feel happy again. He was filling the black hole, sealing it away, with one tiny spec of light at a time...
