Chapter 1 : Beginnings
// since this is the first chapter, there really isn't much interesting stuff going on, sorry ówò
The surface world has been in chaos for quite some time now, years ago quirks emerged, throwing the world in for a loop until it became normal, years after, where only 20% of the human population are quirkless.
Yet even so, the seas remain calm. The Mermaid's tale, although deemed to be nothing but a children's story, is older and much ancient than that. Even as the seas and oceans became polluted, they still exist. Currently there are 6 kingdoms that corresponds to the seven seas yet the Indian Ocean was unaccounted for.
Mermaids are usually lax and carefree creatures, wanting nothing more but to enjoy their life under the water, away from all the chaos the surface brought. That carefree nature of theirs quickly became their downfall as a quirk induced tsunami was created by a villain in the Indian Ocean, destroying the kingdom beneath and the life around it. They thought at the time that humans have done much more horrible things with our ocean yet our kingdoms were not affected, tsunamis have happened in our ocean before, why should we be worried?
The only thing left of their ocean is a lone magical shell, incubating their next prince.
The mermaids had to think quick, shouldn't they? But it was hard, the trauma that the surviving Indian mermaids got turned their hairs completely black and their tails to be jagged as they mourned for their lost kingdom. The other kingdoms have decided to take them in but still, the colors still hasn't returned to them yet.
The current mother of the ocean, Lucia Nanami, along with the other rulers, have decided that they have been too far off the surface. That they need to reconnect, if they want a way to protect the kingdom from the surface's powers then it's best to know the enemy first, and so they did and yet they turned carefree again. As quirks evolve and grow stronger and stronger, of course they need to grow stronger and strong as well.
Abilities that mermaids didn't have before increased, grew stronger and stronger with each and every generation of mermaids. Kingdoms are almost half barren, mermaids coming up to the surface and back down, reporting about what was happening with the human world, yet some don't even return. It wasn't the norm for mermaids to fall for humans yet they end up there anyways.
Mermaids used to have only females yet due to the... rulers activities on the surface world, Male mermaids were normal. Although they were vastly outnumbered by the female mermaids by 1 : 5, since mermaids also mate for life and most of them only have one child and since there's a higher chance of their child being a daughter, it's no doubt that mermaids have come to fall for humans in the surface. Which brings us to now.
"Mooom, I wanna go up too, can I go up?" A small little toddler of a mermaid asked, "you always leave me down here and I'm always so lonely, please?" He asks, pleading.
The mermaid was Midoriya Izuku, heir to the North Atlantic throne, he has always been a curious little boy, always asking his mother or father about their trips up in the surface world. Izuku doesn't ask for much although he could be spoiled rotten by his kind, it's a surprise to hear Izuku ask for anything, even right now, it surprised Inko that her son would want to see the world up there.
Izuku was looking up to her with pleading eyes, there's no way she can say no to that.
"Alright Izuku, but you need someone up there with you incase you want to stay, maybe you can make friends." Inko smiles, "get your father, he will go with you."
"Really? Thanks mom! You're the best, I love you so much!" Izuku twirls happily before he leaves to look for his father with speeds that shouldn't be possible for a little mermaid like him, well... his father has always been quick with a lot of things.
Little Izuku quickly finds his father, he has always been good with looking for things, he hugs him tight.
"Dad, mom said I can come up the surface if I have you with me, can we? Please?" Izuku pleads, looking up to his father with the same pleading eyes he used on his mother, and from there on, the battle was lost.
"Of course of course, papa will come with you!" Hizashi laughs, hugging his son back.
"Thanks, I love you papa!"
"Yes yes, papa loves you too, I'll meet you and your mother out in the front of the gates, okay? Go now."
"Okay, be quick, okay?"
"Okay." Hisashi coos before Izuku practically bolts away.
He goes there in a much more steady pace, Inko smiles at him while Izuku had the largest smile on his cute face.
"So are we going?" Hisashi asks, Inko nods.
"Hold unto Izuku so you can get there faster okay? Izuku wants to get there quick."
"Got it, hold unto me, Zuzu." Izuku complies, holding tight unto his father as he was hugged before they bolted up into the water, Izuku screamed with joy, feeling the currents against him as he held tightly to his father, that spurred Hisashi more to go faster until they were almost on the surface where he slowed down, Izuku giggles.
"Papa, that was so fun. Can we go again?"
"Next time baby, when we go back to the kingdom, papa will get you there as quick as you want, okay?" Izuku nods. They pop out of the water and Izuku scrunched his face.
"Papa, it smells horrible here."
"Humans dump their garbage here, this place is called Dagobah beach."
"What? No papa, this place is just a garbage dump! Mama showed me a picture of a beach and it's not as ugly as this!" Izuku whines.
"Shush, I know you don't like it but humans don't visit this part very often, it makes it easier to transform." Hisashi says as he swims them into the sand, a few moments later, Hisashi transforms into a human, so does Izuku. Izuku looks at his legs curiously and tries to move them a few times.
"It might be hard for you to walk for now since it's your first time Izuku." His father says.
A few moments later, Inko comes up as well, glaring at Hisashi.
"Hisashi, you forgot your travel bag, I had to go into your room and then out before going here."
"Uh well.. you forgot to remind me too?"
"..." Inko huffs before she giggles, she wears her attire, so does Hisashi. Izuku watches them curiously as they put clothes on.
"Do I have clothes too, mama?" Inko nods, taking out an All Might pajama before putting it on Izuku, Izuku doesn't know what this is but it is soft, comfortable and has a lot of nice colors on it! He smiles at his mother cutely.
"Does it look nice?"
"Of course it does, sweetie.
"...Mama, why are your eyes grey now?"
"That's what happen when we tranform baby, your eyes are grey now too."
"...Does it still look cute on Izuku?" Inko nods.
They go to Inko's apartment, Hisashi goes to buy diapers before he comes back with them. Izuku wears it, a long with some other clothes his father bought him while he was out. He wore a simple T-Shirt, a bit too big on him because Hisashi bought from the kids section, not the toddlers one, thankfully he bought the smallest size available. He also wore a light brown shorts that reaches down unto his knees.
The shoes he was made to wear was a bit too big but they can go shopping tomorrow, Izuku wants to explore now!
Izuku struggled with walking for a bit but he has always been a fast learner, he can walk now, although a bit too wobbly, just like a 4 year old should.
"Mama can we go outside now? I wanna see." Izuku asks.
"Okay but remember, you can't tell anyone where you're from or what we are, okay?" Izuku nods, he had to hold his mother's hand as they walked, he needed to keep up balance since they'll be here for a few weeks before they go back into the ocean, or maybe stay, it depends on whether Izuku likes it here or not.
He was carried down the stairs because Inko doesn't trust him yet not to fall, even if he was holding her hand. When Izuku was placed back into the ground, he looked around and was amazed.
"Wow, when I first saw the dump earlier my expectations like, went down really low but now that I'm seeing this, it's really nice mama!" Izuku chirps, "what's this under my feet? It's spiky." Izuku says, gently nudging the grass with his shoes.
"Those are grass, wanna walk around some more Izu? Maybe you'll see some kids in the park."
"Okay!"
They walk to the park, on the way there, Izuku asked about the things he saw, what were those that can move even if there's no ground? It was a bird. What's with the tiny little kingdoms around? Those are houses Izuku, those aren't kingdoms. What is the bigger version of the grass? That's a bush Izuku. What is this large stick with a bush ontop, mama? It's called a tree.
An ice cream vendor was infront of the park and Izuku looked at him, really really wide eyed. Even more as they come close as Inko buys him ice cream, a strawberry cream popsicle. Izuku clumsily took it into his hands and bit it and chewed, he loved the new flavor and coolness in his mouth and chomped the thing except for the stick which was still intact.
"Good, Izu?"
"Really good!" He replies happily, his attention was taken when he heard something loud nearby, he turns his head unto the direction of the noice and his eyes widened an amazement! A kid, looks about his age with yellow hair was making something really really cool with his hands, he was alone on the swing set , Inko noticed and giggles, letting go of his hand. Izuku almost stumbles as he runs towards the kid.
"Wow, what's that?!" Izuku asks.
"Hah? Who are you?" The blond kid asked.
"Oh, my name is Izuku! Nice to meet you!" He says with a toothy grin. Katsuki stares at him.
"Are you a girl?"
"Huh? No, I'm a boy, why?"
"You look like a girl and you're wearing a necklace." Izuku pouts.
"I don't, I'm a boy, and this is a nice necklace!" He whines, Katsuki didn't look convinced.
"...These are explosions, it's my quirk." Katsuki says, showing them to him, he smiled wide as he saw Katsuki's hand crackle.
"Wow, that's so pretty!"
"It's not pretty- it's cool! You're a girl aren't you-"
"Why would I lie about being a boy? I'm a boy! I just look like a girl!"
"No boy I know would call something pretty! You're a girl!"
"I'm a boy!" Izuku whines, almost on the verge of tears, "it's just pretty, what do you want me to call it?"
"Call it cool!"
"But it's not, it's warm-"
"Not literally! Ugh you're so dumb. It's cool as in it's cool! Don't question it, just call it cool, not pretty!" Izuku looks dissatisfied but he relents.
"Fine, it's really cool! What is it?"
"It's my quirk. Have you gotten yours yet?" Izuku ponders.
"I don't think I have one."
"You don't have a quirk? That's so lame."
"I guess it is but I'm fine with it, atleast I can run really fast!"
"Maybe running really fast is your quirk? Heh suits you, Deku."
"Deku? What's that?"
"Your name." Izuku frowns.
"No it's not, my name is Izuku, did you forget already?"
"No, Izuku can be read as Deku. It suits you! You run fast so you run away from all the trouble!"
"Isn't that that you're supposed to do?"
"No, you're really lame! You sound like you don't wanna be a hero!" Izuku ponders, he's heard of heroes before but being a prince sounds cooler because you can sit on a throne and they feed you grapes.
"I think I'm fine with what I am."
"Haha, stupid Deku! You're so lame!" Izuku pouts.
"I think you're really really mean. Are heroes supposed to be mean? Heroes suck if they're mean."
"What? Hey shut up! I'm gonna become the best hero, even better than All Might! I can do it even if I'm mean!"
"That doesn't sound very heroic."
"Hey I'm heroic! I-I can fly with my explosions, just you watch!"
"A bird can fly too! And they're nicer than you!"
"Hey what's going on here?" Mitsuki asked, coming over, she was with Inko, "Inko is this your brat? He looks like you- glad you finally got him here, looks like I don't even have to introduce him to my son!"
"Mama!" Izuku calls out, hiding behind her, Katsuki scowled.
"I knew it , you really are a lame Deku!"
"Hey, be nice to Inko's son!" Mitsuki growls, lightly whacking Katsuki on the head.
"I don't care if he's auntie Inko's son, he's lame!"
"I'm not lame, you are!"
"Am not!"
"Hey break it up you two, there's no need to fight." Inko says softly, the two quickly shut up.
"Katsuki-kun, Izuku is not lame, you shouldn't say that, that's very mean! Izuku, Don't rile up Katsuki-kun and don't call him lame too! Apologize to each other!" Inko huffs, the two look extremely guilty.
"I'm sorry."
"M sorry too." Katsuki murmurs and then they hug.
The next day, Izuku appears in Katsuki's kindergarten, looking anxious but excited at the same time.
"Everyone, I want you to meet Izuku! He will be your new classmate from now on." Their teacher says, Izuku smiles at them brightly, he sits next to Katsuki as the teacher teaches them about English letters.
"Oi, Deku, do you know what the alphabet is atleast?" Izuku nods.
"I think I'm better at speaking in Japanese though." Izuku murmurs.
There wasn't really much happening, they move unto the next subject which is math, Katsuki raises his hand for every question while Izuku was just observing intently. Then came play time.
"Hey hey, are you a girl?" One of his classmates asked.
"I'm a boy! I'm wearing a blue shirt!"
"You're also wearing a necklace though, only girls wear necklaces!"
"No-"
"Hey back off, he's a boy." Katsuki huffs, "he already said he's wearing a blue shirt, he's a boy."
They stopped annoying him after that. Katsuki shows off his quirk again a few moments later when he leaves Izuku alone to go with his friends, Izuku wasn't sure what to do now.
"Yo, wazzup that's a very very cool necklace." A girl with pretty blond hair and grey eyes called out to him, she looks like one of the older kids in the kindergarten.
"Oh hi!"
"Yo I have the same necklace, right here." She says, taking it out of her pink shirt, it was yellow, Izuku gasped and leaned in to whisper.
"Are you from North Pacific?"
"Hell nah I ain't, am from the South Pacific lil bro, lemme guess, ya from North Atlantic?" Izuku nods.
"Could've told immediately, cute, small and a green tuff of hair, yo eyes the same as us."
"Erm... why are you speaking like that?"
"Cause it cool? Everyone cool speaks like this, brother."
"Um..." Izuku looked a bit distraught here, no one he knows really speak like that?
"Aw don't come lookin at me like that! It's fun once ya get used to it!"
"Should I... try?"
"Nah it won't fit you, you too cute to be cool."
"Is that a bad thing?" Camie shrugs.
"It's play time, let's go build blocks." Camie says, dragging him along to the blocks with the other girls.
"Hey, Izu wants to play with us!"
"What? No, he has boy cooties! He was next to Katsuki! Katsuki has a lot of boy cooties!"
"He hellah safe! I made sure of it and he won't knock anything down, he too nice for that!"
They reluctantly let Izuku play with them, like Camie said, Izuku was too nice to knock anything down and actually helped built with the blocks.
"Haha! Izu really is a girl! He's playing with girls!" One of their classmates laughed.
"Don't worry about them Izu-chan! They're mean, you can keep playing with us!"
"O-Oh um, okay!" Izuku says, he didn't really mind the boys teasing him now, it got kind of old since all they could say about him was that he looked like a girl.
"You know, Izu-chan, I think the reason they be hollerin fo you is just because you look really cute." Camie says.
"H-Huh?"
"Yeah, Camie-chan has a lot of boy admirers for some reason, I think they like you too! You both are really pretty!" A girl says, giggling, "Izu-chan is cuter than me!"
"W-Wha-"
"Just accept it!"
They play a bit more, had like lunch break, and then another lesson which are basics his mom already told him and then they had play time until their parents come to get them.
"Dad, do you think I'm cute?" Izuku asks, looking up to him as they walked home.
"Hm? Of course you are, who wouldn't think you're cute?"
"Boys in class think I'm a girl for some reason but Camie-chan told me that it's because I'm cute. Do you think I'm cute enough to be a girl, daddy?"
"Uh, well you're a boy for me?" Izuku frowns, not satisfied.
"You know, it doesn't matter what those boys say, you're my cute little son and there's nothing that can change that, okay?" Hisashi says with a smile.
"So its a yes?"
"...Yes." Izuku pouts.
The next day he comes into kindergarten, Katsuki doesn't want him sitting next to him.
"You have girl cooties, go away!"
"I do not, girls don't have cooties but you have a bad bad attitude! You know what, I don't wanna sit with you anymore, Camie-chan is cooler than you-!"
"No she's not! You know what, you're not allowed to sit anywhere else aside from here and you're playing with us in play time later and you're not allowed to eat lunch with the girls!"
"W-What- why!?"
"You're too girly. We're gonna teach you how to be a boy!"
"If all boys have a bad attitude like you I don't mind being a girl-"
"Shut up I don't have a bad attitude! You do!"
They had their lessons and then it was play time, Izuku huffed as Katsuki dragged him along with his friends. They scale the fence, and then they climb a tree.
"No wonder girls don't like hanging out with you all. This is boring, I wanna play blocks or clay instead." Izuku says, "we just take turns climbing the tree, some of us might get hurt, it's super boring and dangerous."
"No it's not- fine play Rock Paper Scissors with me!"
They go for three rounds before Izuku stops.
"I wanna play with the cooking set with the girls."
"What so fun about cooking?! You can't even say what you're making!"
"What's so fun in climbing fences and trees if you're gonna jump down again anyways?!"
"It's fun! The wind is nice!"
"If I want wind I can run!"
"If you want to cook, cook real food!"
"Hey, calm down you two! Er, Izu-kun, you can go play with the girls now, we don't mind!"
"Hey-!"
"Ah really? Thanks! Bye!" Izuku quickly ran to where the girls were now making ice cream with clay. Katsuki glares at him before he glares at the one who stopped him.
"What's your deal?!"
"We can't force Izu-kun to like things that we do, also can't force us to like things that he likes. Let's just leave him alone."
"But he acts like a girl!"
"He's having fun acting like one, look." His friend points, Izuku had a large smile on his face as he looked at his clay creation, "Izu-kun didn't smile that much when we were climbing a tree."
"That's because he's lame, because he acts like a girl."
"Do you just want him to play with us again?" Katsuki fumed.
"I do not! He's lame and stupid and ugly and I don't care! I hope he chokes on play doh!" Katsuki screams, walking away.
"Haha, he's talking bad about you, totes ain't a cool guy." Camie whistled.
"He'll come around." Izuku murmurs, "I think he wants to be friends but doesn't know how to express it."
"So he's attacking you because he wants to be friends?"
"Katsu-kun acts like what he thinks a boy should be, maybe he thinks attacking is a great way to be friends with someone?" Camie shrugs.
"Man this ice cream salty as hell."
"Camie-chan that's only play doh, don't eat it!"
