Chapter 1
The cab dropped her off in front of a high rise building. It had freshly painted white walls with varieties of flowers; roses, orchids, tulips, carnations, peonies and some unknown species. She fell in love with the building at first sight but maybe it was the large number of people walking around; 99.8% whites that had her nervous. Back at home, the few whites that were seen around were either there to tour or by marriage and it wasn't very common.
She noticed all the looks that were thrown her way, not that she hadn't expected that, as her skin was the real definition of black; it sure attracted people's attention whether they were willing to or not. Her mom always said she looked exactly like her great grand mother who she never saw but had seen in pictures.
She had read it somewhere that college students were more mature and would not pull pranks and try to bully her like high school students would, she wasn't sure about that but the thought made her relax a little, she'd just try her best to stay out of gatherings where she'd be noticed most. With that in mind, she walked slowly towards the entrance which was made of short iron gate. It was a small entrance which can only be passed by two people of her build at the same time.
She patiently waited till she was sure nobody would try to go in with her, she was ready to limit the contact she'd have with these people till she had found someone she could trust who wouldn't hate on her.
She didn't know much about a college system but if it was anything like high school then what would be expected for her to do is submit her health certificate. But the problem was; she didn't know where to submit it. An idea popped into her mind and she sighed, relieved. Spotting a side bench not far from where she stood, she dragged her loads along with her, thankful no one was occupying it at the moment. Personally she thought the belongings she packed were too much, she could just get another set of belongings after she had settled but did her mom ever listen?
She watched closely as people frolicked up and down the campus grounds, there so many buildings, she lost count. It looked like an entire city, one could certainly get lost in it. A couple sat opposite her on a bench similar to the one she was seated on, exchanging spits. In public!?!
She tried to pull her face from the scene even though it was hard not to stare, from some weird reasons people weren't staring at them, as if it was a regular occurrence, as if it was normal. Nothing like that could happen back in her hometown and she didn't want to seem stupid to them by staring wide eyed at the disgusting act going on in front of her.
People entered and exited almost all the buildings but there was a particular building that had most people around it. She guessed it was where the certificate was to be submitted so she got up and went towards it.
A group of boys, men to be frank because none of them was less than 5'9 were standing close to the entrance, the less attractive of them would get any girl to drop her pant for him, except the girl happened to be her. She closed her eyes for a second and prayed to whatever god was available at the moment for her to pass without any occurrence.
And she did.
The men didn't even spare her a look as they discussed some soccer matches that were fixed for that night. She released a relived sigh and walked towards the lady seated behind a grey desk with a lot of papers she guessed to be health certificates. She knew how frustrated the Lady must be having to collect, take record and do whatever stuff she had to do so she spared her greetings and just handed her the certificate.
The brunette who she found out to be Susan Navy from the name tag she wore scanned through the certificate, her eyebrows raising at something she saw in it.
"You're asthmatic?" I almost rolled my eyes at the dumb question. I didn't bother to reply her so as not to say something rude. I mean, it's practically stated there that the owner of the certificate is asthmatic so why did she ask?
"Well, I didn't think blacks could have asthma too." She defended when she noticed the mean look I threw her.
"Yeah, cause blacks don't have lungs." How did she come up with that smart fact. I snatched my health certificate from her hand and duped it where the other certificates were lying. I didn't even get five steps away from the building when a guy in roller shoes ran past me. If not for my amazing reflexes which threw me out of harm's way, I would have landed on the floor from the impact of collision and who knows if he'd have just taken off like he did now.
Is this place prison for the dumbs and stupid?
I found my way to my assigned room using the maps and instructions I was given in the institution package. The corridor was very busy. Girls were at every corner chatting, setting in their dorms or trying to find their way through the chaos; like I was trying to do. The building was incredibly huge and modest, I fell in love with everything about the place already. I hoped the people who occupied the space would give the same energy, but it wasn't going to happen. As long as they were walking and talking, they would definitely ruin my mood in the slightest way.
I sighed in relief when I made it inside the room and closed the door. Two small bed, which had more than enough room for one person, were on each side of the room and a huge casement window between them. Other furniture were there and a lot of space. My new roommate was no where to be seen, and I was glad for that. I had space to settle down.
Halfway through my attempt to unpack before my roommate appears, she walked in. We both glanced at each other. Her eyes widened at the sight of me. Her straight, blonde hair was in a ponytail and she was wearing a cute red and white joggers suit which blend with her slightly pale skin.
Her brows frowned and her blue eyes glinted with confusion. "What are you doing in here?"
I rolled my eyes and went back to putting my clothes away. "I'm taking notes so I can remodel, isn't it obvious?"
She scoffed, "I didn't ask for you, I asked for my bestfriend to be paired with me. Not some....some..."
"Some what princess? You aren't entitled to anything here. If you don't wish to share a room with me, then ask for a transfer because I'm not moving all this again." I told her as I gestured to my stuff.
She stormed over to the spare bed and threw her things down, "you better not steal anything, and I don't want you to create any trouble for me."
"That's the same thing I want," I added. "And I doubt you have anything I want."
That night, she went to sleep angry with no one in particular. The expression on the girl which she had yet to know her name was imprinted in her mind forever. Back home, her colour wasn't very common and most people appreciated it.
She didn't like it that she might one of those girls who were seriously bullied for their skin. She smirked a little at the thought, the last thought she had before dozing off; "They can try, I'm a hard nut to crack."
