VI : Something About Romance Books

Dedicated to jadey800 for putting my rant in her awesome rant book! Her book is called 'Wattpad Rants,' many books have that title but it's easy to know through username. It's really interesting and you can also send some of your rants in it! Thanks so much Jadey! c:

So as you see from my dedication, I had submitted a rant to Miss Jade's rant book recently. It has been bugging me for weeks not and I need more people to know it. I'll be just fine posting it here since this book is still invisible to other Wattpad eyes. :d

"So I have noticed something recently. Why don't they have any other distinguishable famous book here aside from romance teen fiction? There are some famous sci-fi and fantasy books here but romance always overshadows them. You may put aside those cliche romance books but the genre always outnumbers every other. A lot of people use Wattpad in where I live but only read it for romance books. Most fanfiction are also romance. In every fandom I go I just try to find sci-fi/horror fanfiction but most of the good ones are just very unpopular or nonexistent. Like seriously, do you really have to write a romance book to get famous?"

I need more fandom friends.

I'm getting desperate guys

That's why I always hang out at the bookstore

I needed a chance

hOWEVER, I am always alone in the place of my favorite books like Harry Potter and PJO and the classic weird imaginatively crazy books

Its always kids who buy geronimo stilton who even try to go near my spot

aND YOU wanna know where the girls my potential fangirling age are???

wHY OF COURSE THE CHEESY CLICHED WATTPAD ROMANCE BOOKS SECTION OF COURSE

At my country the only possible local-made books that get famous are those cheesy romance books and some weird adult crap that i don't know about

So basically after months of searching and waiting alone in my bookstore spot and my school surrounded by girls that obsess over celebrities like james reedpipe and that nadine girl and kathniel (is that it idk anymore *flips table*), wattpad stories and kpop, I decided to give the local book section a try.

((ok i live in the philippines happy now))

After seeing the books in the local books section i was literally frustrated

Like, they had really awesome comics. Also awesome jokebooks and other books that really entertained me in reading

But seriously THE COMICS THEY ARE AMAZING WTH

However, YET AGAIN NOBODYS THERE and once again, i ended up standing alone reading comics like an idiot because why?

EVERY SINGLE GIRL BOY KID AND ADULT IS IN THE WATTPAD ROMANCE SECTION

AND EVENTUALLY I TRIED READING THEM

OHMYGOSH WERE THEY CHEESY I CAN ALREADY SEE FROM THE BLURB WTF

MOST OF THEM WERE COVERED BUT ONCE I FIND AN UNCOVERED ONE I HAD MADE MYSELF A GOAL TO READ ONE ENTIRE CHAPTER WITHOUT BEING DISCOURAGED IN THE TYPICAL TEENAGE GIRLS IN MY COUNTRY

But seriously, most of those books in my opinion had ideas so cheesy and trope-y and it was actually funny. My awesome cousin once read one of those books and she said here's how the prologue went:

"I was wrong, so wrong.

Why did I do that,

I was wrong."

pFFFFT I so sorry if you eventually knew the book, and loved it, or (god forbid) the creator, I'm not specifically attacking your entire book babies, I know, because I would probably rage at them too. The point is, me and my cousin just found them incredibly cheesy to the point where we even wonder if there is still hope that a girl our age is not reading those stuff.

((Proper rant mode on-wait what))

There are only a few kinds of romances that I really learned to love so far. Most of them are from anime, but I always seem to love those kinds of pairings where the boy is just very dorky and lovable and the girl starts to love his attitude like

Haruka x Takane from Kagerou Project (see otp video above)

Percabeth from the PJO and HoO series

Minato x Kushina from Naruto

Haru x Shizuka from My Little Monster

NaLu from Fairy Tail

1827 and 8059 from Reborn! (don't ask)

KageHina from Haikyuu! (it works both ways lol sHUT UP)

Yato x Hiyori from Noragami

I also like those kinds of romance pairings where both the boy and the girl have gone through very rough times together and are both equally badass like Jellal x Erza from Fairy Tail or Reynico from HoO (even though it's highly not possible but still).

Those are the only kinds of romance and pairings that I like, unfortunately they usually aren't the most loved (ok almost all of them are the main pairing but that doesn't stop the other pairings). I could only say, romance is just not my type since it usually doesn't follow the form above. I'm selfish, I know.

But the whole point of this post is, why are romance almost always the most famous and loved (pun unintended) genre? I haven't had the clearest answer. Possibly because it's the most easy to make? More people like it? It connects better with our fantasy? I'm not bashing on the whole thing itself, I happen to have some fun making romance scenarios in my head (but hey they never end well so don't expect me to write a romance without crushing your hopes and dreams); but, I also wonder why it gets all the unneeded attention.

Look at the What's Hot section of Wattpad. Once in a blue moon there will actually be a story book that is not your cliched everyday romance.

Look at your fandom, for example. No matter how serious or heartless the whole show is, let's say Attack on Titan, it almost always has an alternate universe of romance fanfiction in the fandom. Not only that, but the they usually aren't even as half as good as the sci-fi/fantasy/thriller ones. But do you know where else the sci-fi/fantasy/thriller and good romance fanfics are?

OH MY GOSH DEFINITELY NOT IN THE UNDISCOVERED "GEMS" SECTION.

THE STORIES THERE AREN'T EVEN THAT GOOD OMG

This also applies to real life books too. A lot of the books I find in the bookstore most famous are romance books, particularly YA. I mean, do people really just start to read books because of those?? I mean, after all the torture bookworms have been given all these years? What happened to the awesome imaginative books like Harry Potter or PJO and the others that belong to that class? aND YOU FREAKING DARE TO CALL THOSE BOOKS FOR KIDS

*breathes* This rant is getting out of topic. So as I was saying,

Guys, give the other books a chance. A lot of good authors have worked their way up for their books and it's disappointing to see a sloppily done cliched romance getting more appreciation than theirs. Not all the entire book world is about romance, heck, that's the magic of books! If you really want to call yourself a bookworm, go out of your comfort zone and start reading other books! Believe me, you won't regret it, and as opposed to the rant above, I'm starting to begin reading one of the local romance books that one of my friends suggested. And amazingly, I found it interesting from the first page. It felt awkwardly good reading other books, and that's the magic of being a bookworm.

Fanfic and story writers, romance isn't the only way to get famous. You guys can prove that you don't need cliched romance to get famous, the whole fandom needs more diversity, use it!

The whole point is, give other books a chance. You'll never know what might be coming at you.

・・・

Hey guys, I'm so sorry for the late update! Summer math enrichment classes really bummed me out in the last two weeks. Not only that, I have been having some writer's block lately. Writer's block in an opinions book? Yeah, I'm a terrible person. *sulks in corner*

Also, thank you so much guys for the 187 reads! Thank you also to IggysTea and @93occultist for voting in my story! I never seriouly expected anyone aside from my friends to check this out, thank you all so much! And also for the other silent readers out there, don't be afraid to come out. Believe me this place is getting kinda quiet...
