Chapter Nine
Emma's POV
It was about noon and Emma had just finished her last class, stuffing her books into her bag and walking out of the classroom. It had been about a week since Lily had been making cookies with Haz and Emma was really happy for her, this was the longest any of her relationships had lasted and Harrison seemed like a good guy. She walked a little further down the sidewalk and saw a familiar brown haired boy standing there.
"Tom!" she exclaimed, grinning at him, they had a date today but she didn't know exactly where.
"Hi, luv. You ready to go?"
"Yep," she said, following him to his car where he opened the door for her and she slid in. Closing the door behind her, Tom walked around the front and hopped into the driver's seat, putting in the keys and turning them, the engine rumbling to a start. He backs out of the spot and pulls onto the road, making sure not to swerve on the ice. After about an hour of driving, he pulls into a parking lot and parks in a spot, turning off the engine and stepping out, walking over to Emma and opening the door for her. She joins him out in the snow, tugging the leather jacket tighter around her as he hooks an arm around her shoulders, pulling her gently into him. They walk into a building and over to the counter, where a man is standing.
"Welcome to Topgolf, do you have a reservation?"
"Yes, Holland for two?" The man nods and gives them directions, leading them up to the third floor, which is practically empty. They get some hot chocolate and listen as the man explains how it works. You take a club out of the holder and swipe it over the censor, which shoots out a golf ball. Then you swing and aim for one of the ring holes in the ground, each is a different amount of points.
"You want to go first, Tom?" Emma asks after the gentleman leaves. He smiles and grabs a club, adjusting his hands on the grips with ease, before getting a ball and pulling back his arms and swinging with a mighty stroke. She squints into the sun and watches as the ball sails away from their perch and lands in one of the rings, scoring him twenty points. He takes his other two turns and his points are at fifty-five, he steps back and ushers Emma forward. Nervously, she walks over to the rack and pulls out a club. The only time she had golfed was Mini Golf with her family, and she always lost, no matter what. With a sigh she gets the ball and bends over, putting it onto the little tee. She gulps and swings with all her might, but she almost misses the ball, hitting it just enough that it rolls off the tee and down into the net and onto the edge of the grass, missing by a long shot. She hears a slight chuckle escape Tom's lips, but he quickly closes his mouth again and heads over to Emma, standing behind her and putting his hands on hers, moving them so that she can hit right. After a few practice shots they get a ball and he watches as she smacks the ball. This time it actually flies off of the tee, but it doesn't get very far and lands in the five-pointer. Tom smiles and gives her a high-five before she hits her next ball, which also lands in the five. After about an hour and a half, their time is up and the final score is Tom: 165 and Emma: 36.
"It's ok, darling. You'll get better with time." Emma sheepishly kicks the toe of her shoe into the ground and looks up at him, a small grin on her face.
"Fine, but don't expect me to always lose. I challenge you to a game of Monopoly, tonight."
"Ok, my place. I'll tell Haz and Sam to leave us alone."
Emma smiles at him, "You're on." They put their clubs back in the holder and hop in the car, heading over to Tom's apartment, or 'flat' as he called it. Stepping inside, they walk forward and see Harrison and Sam sitting on a couch, their legs propped up on a glass coffee table, watching tv.
"Haz, Sam," Tom says and they quickly fumble with the remote when they see Emma, turning the tv off and pulling their feet off the table, leaving dusty footprints behind.
"Geez, could you give us a little warning, mate?" Haz says, exasperated.
"Could you go upstairs, please. We're playing Monopoly." Emma sees Sam wink at Tom with his left eye as he walks, thinking that Emma would be oblivious, and the two walk up the stairs. Tom walks over to a cabinet and opens it, revealing a stack miles high of every board game you could imagine. He pulls out Monopoly and opens it, unfolding the board and setting it in the middle of the table.
"Ok, who do you want to be; dog, horse, shoe, thimble, wheelbarrow, or hat?"
"Dog," she says and he places her piece on Go! before selecting the shoe for himself.
"Do you want to be banker, or should I?"
"I don't care."
"Ok, then I will," he says, pulling the money to him and looking at the instructions, passing out the required amount of starting money to each of them. They roll the dice and Emma gets to go first, she moves five and lands on the reading railroad, quickly purchasing it. It's Tom's turn and he gets a four, landing on income tax. "Come on, seriously?" He says, dramatically placing the needed $100 in the middle of the board. Emma giggles before picking up the dice and rolling again. After a few hours of playing (everyone knows Monopoly takes forever) Tom finally goes bankrupt, mortgaging his last property, Mediterranean Avenue, but coming up about a thousand dollars short. Emma had managed to get both the Boardwalk and Park Place, with hotels on each, and he had been unlucky enough to have landed on one or the other at least twice, quickly draining his money. She lets out a happy cheer and stands up from the ground, where they had both been kneeling, and spins in a circle, pumping her arm. Her face tuns beet red when she looks down and sees Tom, stifling his laughter.
"Sorry, I'm just... a... a little competitive," she says stuttering a little, nervous.
He chuckles warmly, "You're good, luv. Trust me, I would've done the same." She joins in with his laughter, her eyes watering and her chest aching from how hard she's laughing. When she catches her breath she sits down on the couch behind her, Tom sliding in smoothly next to her.
Emma looks at him, staring into his brown eyes, feeling something in her chest that she had never felt before. She leans into him, closing her eyes as she sees him leaning in with her, and their lips touch, sending a chill down her spine. After what feels like hours she pulls away. "I love you, Tom," she says breathlessly, her face full of adoration. Tom looks at her, his eyes wide with nervousness, and she starts freaking out inside. Did she say it too soon? What if he didn't love her back? But then his brown eyes soften, a small smile playing on his lips.
"I love you too, Emma." They lean into each other once more, their kiss more passionate this time, more desperate. She felt like she was floating on an endless cloud of bliss, their lips locked as they continued kissing and slowly pull away to catch their breath. All the sudden she feels something warm and fuzzy brush her leg and jumps a mile high, looking down she sees Tessa walking beneath the couch and laughs. When Tom realizes what happened he joins in and they laugh for a while longer, petting Tessa behind the ears and giving her a belly rub when she rolls over. Soon she hears footsteps on the stairs and looks up to see Sam and Haz walking, more like hopping, down the stairs, skipping over steps and jumping down flights.
When they reach the bottom Sam heads to the kitchen, blending ingredients together in a steamy bowl, the smell enticing. Before she knows it an alarm is going off and they head over to the table to have the Chicken Tikka Masala that he had just cooked along with rice and naan bread. They quickly devour the delicious food, trying to savor it, but also trying to eat as much of it as possible. When they finish up, their bellies are bulging from the meal, sluggish from all of it.
"Hey Emma, it's 10:30, why don't you spend the night here?" Emma's cheeks flush at the thought, but she's too embarrassed to actually stay at his house.
"I don't have any pajamas or anything though, and there's nowhere for me to sleep, I'm sorry."
He smiles at her, "You can have a pair of my sweatpants and one of my tshirts. I can sleep out on the couch out here and you can have my bed."
"No, I couldn't possibly make you do that."
"I insist," he says, his words sending shivers down Emma's spine. She nods and he guides her upstairs to his room, handing her grey sweatpants and a light blue tshirt. He grabs a blanket from the edge of his bed and a pillow from his closet. "Ok, you get changed and come get me if you need anything." Nodding again, he closes the door and she quickly changes into his clothes, and they surprisingly aren't that big. Smiling, she pads downstairs and she and Tom say their goodnights before she heads back upstairs and closes the door behind her, turning off the light. She slides beneath the sheets, realizing that Tom had slept in these every night before, and smiles at herself before closing her eyes and drifting off into a peaceful sleep
