Meeting the Parents

"Come on Mamo-chan! It'll be fun!"

He sighed, "Usako, what part of me meeting your parents do you think is going to be fun?"

"The part when they totally fall in love with you just like I did!" she snuggled closer to him on the couch. "Come on Mamo-chan, pretty please with a thousand cherries on top!"

He shook his head smiling, "I don't know how you talk me into these things." He gave her a kiss on the forehead. "What time?"

She started grinning madly, "Five o'clock at my house! Tomorrow night! Oh, I'm so excited! They're going to love you!"

"I'm going to hate him!"

"Dear, be nice..."

Usagi's father was fuming. Usagi had just told her parents that she had invited Mamoru to dinner tomorrow night. Once she was finished, she ran up to her room to talk on the phone. Now her parents were discussing their plans for tomorrow night.

"You at least need to give him a chance Kenji," Ikuko told him.

He sighed, "I guess you're right. I'm being a bit overprotective, aren't I?"

"Just a tad dear." She gave him a kiss on the cheek. "I'm sure Mamoru is a very respectable young man."

"I'm sure you're right." He smiled, "Has Usagi mentioned what grade he's in?"

Ikuko shook her head, "No she hasn't said."

He shrugged, "Well, he probably won't be that much older..."

"You guys are going to love Mamo-chan!" Usagi said for probably the thirtieth time that day. "He's so sweet and caring and joyful and so much more!"

Her mother laughed as they finished setting the table, "I'm sure we will. I'm just glad we finally get to meet him."

Shingo shrugged, "Eh, he's alright." Usagi stuck her tongue out at him.

"Wait!" Kenji ran over to Shingo, "You've met this guy?!"

"Yeah, I've seen him and stupid Usagi walking around town a few times." He replied.

"What's he like?!" Kenji started shaking him, "Were they doing anything inappropriate?! Does he look shady?! What kind of clothes was he wearing?! Did he look like a beggar that's just trying to make a quick buck off of my sweet little girl?!"

Shingo released himself from his dad's grip. "Chill out dad. He seemed pretty normal. Besides, who would want to date Usagi for money? She wastes all of it on food."

"Hey!" she smacked him on the head.

Kenji sighed, "Oh that's a relief..."

"He seems pretty cool." Shingo went back to filling glasses with ice. "He's a little old though..."

"How old?!"

*Ding Dong*

"I'll get it!" Usagi jumped from her seat and ran to the door, her mother following close behind.

Usagi swung the door open "Mamo-chan!" she jumped onto him and gave him a big hug.

"Hi Usako." He smiled down at her, "Did you miss me?"

"Only a little," she said blushing as she let go of him. She looked down and saw that he was holding a bouquet of roses. "Aw! Mamo-chan are those for me?! Oh, you shouldn't have!"

He rolled his eyes "No they aren't for you." She started pouting.

"You must be Mamoru." Usagi's mom appeared in the doorway.

"Good evening Mrs. Tsukino." He held the flowers out to her. "These are for you."

"Really?" she was blushing as she took the flowers. "Oh, that's so sweet! Come inside you two. I'm going to find a vase."

As they followed her into the house, Usagi held onto Mamoru's arm. She sniffed, "You smell good. Are you wearing cologne?"

He blushed, "Maybe a little..."

"And your hair looks really nice." She smirked, "You really are taking this whole meeting the parents thing seriously."

"I want to impress them." He said, "I love you so much Usako, I want them to see that I really care about you."

Usagi smiled at him, "I'm sure they'll love you. Now, come on."

She dragged him into the kitchen where her dad and Shingo were already seated. Ikuko was just finishing putting the food on the table. "Come sit down you two."

Kenji's mouth dropped as soon as he saw Mamoru. "Wh... what?!" everyone looked at him surprised. "He's your boyfriend?!"

"Dad be nice..." Usagi whispered at him.

"Uh... it's nice to meet you, sir." Mamoru held his hand out to him. "My name is Mamoru Chiba..."

Kenji just glared at him, refusing to shake his hand. Usagi and Mamoru took their seats.

"So, uh..." Ikuko could feel the tension "What do you like to do for fun Mamoru?"

"I uh... I enjoy reading." He replied, "And I like taking jogs through the park."

"What kind of books do you like?" she asked as they started passing the food around.

"Detective novels are my favorite." He answered. "Although I do enjoy the occasional fantasy. I'm not extremely picky."

"How old are you?" Kenji interrupted.

"Um..." Usagi gripped his hand in support. "I turned 18 in August."

"You do realize that Usagi is only 14." He stated gruffly. "Also known as a minor."

"Dad!" Usagi yelled. "Mamo-chan is nothing but a gentleman when we go on dates."

"Usagi, I am not going to let this man continue to prey on young girls!" he yelled back.

"Kenji please calm down..." Ikuko said carefully.

"Um..." Mamoru looked over at Usagi. "Maybe I should go..."

"No!" Usagi grabbed onto him. "You're not going anywhere!"

"I think we all may have gotten off on the wrong foot," Ikuko said calmly. "Let's just take a deep breath and start over."

Shingo just sat there not sure what was going on. The few times he had met Mamoru, he thought he was a pretty cool guy. He only made fun of him because he enjoyed making fun of Usagi. "So uh, you're friends with Motoki, right?"

Mamoru nodded, "Yeah, we go to school together. He's my best friend."

"It must be pretty nice having a best friend that works at an arcade," Shingo said trying to lighten the mood.

"Yeah," Mamoru laughed a little "he gives me all the milkshakes a want. Why do you think I go on jogs?" Usagi, Shingo, and Ikuko all laughed but Kenji was obviously wasn't amused.

"So, you are in college?" Kenji asked still glaring at him.

"Yes, sir..." Usagi could see that he was shaking like a leaf.

"What are you studying?" Ikuko asked.

This time Usagi answered for him. "Mamo-chan is studying medicine!" she said proudly. "He's going to become an amazing doctor and save lots of lives!"

"That's amazing Mamoru." Ikuko smiled at him. "Helping people is a great aspiration to have."

He blushed, "I just want to do what I can to give back to the world."

"What kind of doctor do you want to be?" Shingo asked.

"I want to work with kids mostly. Hospitals can be scary..." Usagi put a comforting hand on his knee. "I want to be able to make sure that their stays are the least frightening as possible."

"Once again dealing with people far younger than you," Kenji said angrily. "Are you sure there aren't any other reasons you want to work with little kids?"

"Kenji!" Ikuko glared at him. "What an absurd suggestion!"

Kenji finally lost it, "I don't know how this man has tricked you all into thinking he is some kind of saint, but I won't hear it! This man is preying on young children! One of them being our own daughter! And I won't stand it any longer!"

"Dad calm down!" even Shingo was appalled by his behavior.

"I won't calm down!" he glared at Mamoru, "What kind of creep would try to date a girl in junior high?! Your parents should be ashamed of you!"

A silence fell over the room. Mamoru slid back his chair and stood up. "I think I should go." Usagi tried to stop him. "It's okay Usako. I'll see you later. It was nice meeting, you Mrs. Tsukino." He walked out of the room and a few seconds later they heard the door close.

Ikuko glared at her husband, "Well Kenji, I hope you're happy with yourself!"

He relaxed into his chair, "You might be upset with me now, but you'll see it my way one day. I refuse to let that man date our daughter. I don't know what his parents are like, but they must not have raised him well."

Usagi stood up from her seat so quickly she knocked the chair over. "You had no right to speak to Mamo about his parents like that!"

"And why shouldn't I?! They should be disappointed in him for the way he has been acting!" he yelled.

"Mamo is an orphan!" she practically screamed. They all went silent. "When he was six, he and his parents were in a car crash. Because of the accident, Mamo lost all of his memories prior to waking up in the hospital. That's why he wants to be a children's doctor. So yeah, I hope you're happy..." she then stomped away.

"I'm uh... I'm going to go play Sailor V..." Shingo got up too and ran up to his room.

"I know you care about Usagi, I do too." Ikuko started. "But you had no right to treat that young man like that..." she also got up and left the room. Leaving Kenji alone to think about what he had just done...

"Mamo-chan I am sooo sorry!"

He smiled at her, "It's okay Usako. I understand." The next day the two had met up at the arcade. Motoki had been curious about how it all went. Once they had told him, he treated them to milkshakes. Not that he wouldn't have given them to them anyway.

"I can't believe your dad said all of that," Motoki said sympathetically.

"Ugh! I'm just so mad!" Usagi slammed her fist on the counter. "If he had tried to get to know you Mamo, he would see that you're a great guy!"

"He just cares about you Usako," Mamoru said sadly as he stirred his milkshake. "He wants to make sure that you're dating someone that is up to his standards."

"But you are up to his standards Mamo-chan!" Usagi pouted, "Daddy would really like you if he just gave you a chance!"

"I don't blame him." Mamoru continued stirring his drink.

"You're taking this pretty well dude." Motoki sat down on a stool across from them. "Especially after he mentioned your parents."

Mamoru shrugged, "He didn't know my back story so I can't blame him for that."

Usagi sighed, "Well, at least mom liked you. I guess she'll be the one that has to walk me down the aisle. Unless you want the honor Motoki?" she said batting her eyelashes.

"We're getting married?!" Mamoru asked surprised.

"When's the wedding? I'll have to rent a tux." Motoki said laughing.

"I've always wanted a December wedding," Usagi said daydreaming. "What would you like Mamoru?"

He chuckled, "I'd marry you any day of the year Usako, just say the word."

Usagi leaned in to kiss him but Motoki quickly held up a magazine to block her. "If you two are going to get all lovey-dovey get a room. I don't need to see my best friend making out with someone who is basically my little sister." They both stuck their tongues out at him, and he sighed. "Am I the only mature one around here?"

"Usagi!" she turned around and watched as Shingo ran through the door. "I'm supposed to tell you to come home."

"Huh?" she asked confused. "It's only four o'clock. Why do I have to go home so early?"

He shrugged, "Dad just asked me to come get you. And he said you're supposed to bring him along." He said gesturing to Mamoru.

The two looked at each other confused before heading out the door.

Mamoru's grip on Usagi's hand tightened as they walked up to the door. "What do you think this is about?"

She shook her head, "I have no clue..." she opened the door and the two walked in with Shingo following behind.

"Usagi! Welcome home!" she was confused as her dad walked in wearing an apron. "Come inside you guys!"

They followed him into the house where he led them into the kitchen. Ikuko was already seated at the table and looked about as confused as they were. The three of them took a seat as Kenji finished setting the food on the table. "You kids help yourselves. You too Mamoru."

"Uh... thank you sir..." they all started eating in silence.

"So Usagi, how was school today?" her father asked.

"Uh, it was good," she replied.

"What about you Shingo? Have a good day?" he took a sip of his water.

"Um, yeah it was good," he answered. "Not really anything different than normal..."

"And what about you Mamoru? Good day at school?" Kenji turned to him.

Mamoru choked a bit on his water, "Um... yeah, I had a good day..."

"Kenji?" he turned to Ikuko "What is all this about?"

He sighed, "Look Mamoru, I'm sorry. We got off to a bad start yesterday, and I treated you horribly. I'm sorry... I wanted to start over. I just... I care about Usagi so much..."

"I do too sir." He held onto Usagi's hand. "I've... had a difficult life... Usako is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I would do anything for her. Even lay down my life if necessary."

"Well, hopefully, it doesn't come to that..." Usagi said nervously. "But I feel the same way..."

"I'm glad to hear you both say that." Kenji smiled at him, "And Mamoru again, I am so sorry."

"It's alright sir, I understand..." he smiled at Usagi as they all continued talking. By the end of the evening, Mamoru had been welcomed into the family with open arms. Everything had turned out alright...

The End.
