interview #8 @LillianHoffer

1 what inspired you to write?

I started writing in 2013 after a really bad breakup with my first love. I participated in NaNoWriMo that year and cranked out a 60K word book in 30 days. It was so insane, but I loved every second of it. Unfortunately, I graduated college and started working full time after that, so I fell out of writing for awhile. I just started back up thanks to the downtime provided by COVID. I am really passionate about my new novel, Reveille, so I'm going to try to keep writing steadily this time. Maybe one day writing can be my full time job

2 what's your schedule regarding your writing?

In the early COVID days it was all day every day. I am back at work full-time, so I try to write every night before bed; some nights it's just two sentences, and other nights it is a thousand words. It just sucks, because I will write nonstop when I am not working and am bored, but on work days though, I'm tired and usually just want to eat dinner and get to sleep. It is a bit dispiriting to know I could be writing a lot more, but I have to pay the bills.

3 who is your favorite author?

Oh, I hate this question! I don't really have a favorite author. I have favorite books, of course, but there's no one particular author that strikes out to me, not in the Fantasy world anyhow. Most Fantasy authors are one series and done-ers in terms of world-building (including spin-offs). It's like with musicians, right? You can easily choose a favorite, because they have so much material. Albums and albums. You don't really get this with Fantasy authors. I guess if I had to choose, I'd say Tolkien or George R. R. Martin. Their world-building is unparalleled.

4 Are you still surprised when you get a new vote, follow or comment

Absolutely! Especially when it isn't an exchange I've coordinated with a book club or read-for-read. Each comment, particularly, is special; whether good, bad, or indifferent. I love all feedback.

5 what's your favorite holiday and why?

HALLOWEEN! It's the one time of year that the Fantasy world and the real world collide! (Unless you are a Cosplayer/LARPer, in which case I envy you.) I love dressing up in costume. You get to be whomever you want to be that night. Dragonslayer? Princess? Pirate? All of the above? Yes. You can do it. Side note: I'm actually getting married this Halloween. Isn't that exciting?

6 if you could hang out with your favorite celeb for a day, who would you choose and what would you do?

Goodness. This is a tough question. I would probably hang out with Halsey. I love her music and her person in general. She's very pro-woman, forward thinking, and about inclusivity, anti-racism, equality, etc. She's a great progressive woman that happens to be an amazing musician and artist. I think spending the day with her would be spiritually satisfying.

7 what's a good piece of advice for a newcomer?

Use the forums! Whether you are reading or writing. It is a great place to get and give support.

8 what's your favorite thing about Wattpad?

The audience 100%. I can totally use my Google Drive and share my novel link to get people I know to read my book. However, Wattpad offers you a variety of readers from different regions and different backgrounds that can read and provide different perspectives. I think that is astonishing.

9 what's one Wattpad goal?

Win the Watty's! Hopefully I can finish my Science Fiction novel before the deadline so I can enter both Reveille and When Silver Rises.

10 how would you celebrate a publishing deal?

With a hospital visit due to a heart attack? Although that is likely, I would definitely plan to have a celebratory party with mine and my fiance's families. Both of our families have been really supportive of this novel from the moment I published it to Wattpad a little over a month ago.

11 what's a song you enjoy? Who is the artist

I LOVE MUSIC, so this is the toughest question so far. Seriously, check out Reveille, the Chapter Titles ARE SONG TITLES. The song is the soundtrack for that chapter. The song really sets the mood of the chapter and foreshadows what the chapter is about. I'd say Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift has been on repeat a lot lately. It's giving me inspiration for the sequel. I bet sleuths can probably deduce a lot from that! No spoilers!

Request time!

I've mentioned Reveille a good bit in this interview, so I'll definitely hype it up some more here. Reveille is so good, especially if you love Supernatural creatures, but are tired of the cliche ones. My world takes everything you think you know about the Supernatural (Vampires, Werewolves, Faeries, Djinn, Demons, Mermaids, etc.) and puts an Elemental spin on all of it. It is Fantasy-Romance so there's love, lust, action, drama, suspense. I promise it is a read you don't want to miss out on!
