Chapter 2: Alice
"Go on, Alice, ask him out!"
Celia, my best friend, had been urging me to ask him out for ages. Him meaning my only friend besides Celia, the most popular guy in school and my major crush. Percy Jackson.
Percy is really good looking. In fact, that's a massive understatement. He's completely knockout gorgeous. His jet black hair is always untidy, which makes it look absolutely amazing. He has a perfect tan and a lean, muscular body. But the stars of the show are his eyes. They are a beautiful, deep, sea-green; sometimes I feel like I could just melt into them.
I know he's way out of my league. He's really popular, and he's nice to everyone (even me!), and I could go on about him for days and still not be finished preaching about his complete perfection.
Celia was always trying to get me to pluck up the courage to ask him out. "Celia, you know I can't!" I'd always whisper back.
"Don't be so negative, Alice," she would reply, "you can do anything you want."
That particular summer Thursday on which my story takes place, Percy Jackson walked past the outdoor bench that Celia and I were sitting on. I could hear my heart pounding in my chest, and it felt like the whole of New York could hear it, too. Percy then turned and looked at me. And smiled. And waved. My heart skipped a beat for each gesture.
Once he looked away, Celia elbowed me. "Now's your chance," she whispered.
Maybe I had had enough of Celia's nagging, or maybe it had helped me. I don't know. But whatever the reason, something made me stand up and walk tensely towards him.
I followed him into the school shop and stood in the queue behind him. When he finally made it to the front and placed his order, he began to walk out of the shop. As he did so, he noticed me. And looked and smiled and waved again!
"Hey, Alice," he said. I'm going to die, I thought. Percy Jackson said hi to me!!!
My heart thudded madly, like a huge drum audible to the whole world. I took deep breaths to calm myself down.
"Hey, Percy," I replied as casually as I could.
We walked in awkward silence for a few moments.
"So, how's life?" Percy asked in an attempt to break the silence.
"Good, thanks," I responded. I had to get to the point, but I had no idea how. So I just did the natural thing - get straight to it.
"So, I was wondering," I began a little shakily, "would you be free, maybe Saturday?"
Percy opened his mouth to respond, but just then his phone rang.
He held out a finger to say "just a minute" while he pulled his phone out of his jeans pocket with the other hand.
"Hello?" He said. I stood there awkwardly, looking at the ground.
"Really?! That's great! Really great!" Percy was exclaiming into the phone happily. He began to run in the direction of the school gates, where I saw a girl standing.
She was about my age, but much taller than me. She had honey blonde hair that shone beautifully in the summer sunlight. She had perfectly sun kissed skin, and when she turned to face us, i saw that her eyes were a fierce-but-beautiful stormy grey.
When she caught sight of Percy, she grinned and her eyes sparkled. She threw her arms around Percy's neck and they... kissed.
I couldn't believe it. It wasn't fair. I had spent weeks working up the courage just to talk to him, and weeks more to ask him out. And it had all been for nothing.
I looked at my watch and said to Percy and his girlfriend, "I'd better go, or I'll be late for my next class. See you," before turning away so that they wouldn't see the tears welling up in my eyes.
Yes, I was heartbroken. Yes, I cried for days and spent a lot of time alone in my bedroom. But I got over it. And now, fifteen years later, I've got my very own Percy. I'm happy for the real Percy Jackson and his girlfriend, and I hope that their love lives on.
