CHAPTER FIVE:  the tell

NOAH STILINSKI AND STILES HAD GONE TO THE THADDEUS RESIDENCE. The two had picked up the younger one.

"Do you have any clue when your parents will be back?" Noah asked Caspian.

Caspian continued to chew the fries, carefully watching the two. He glared at Stiles. "Next week.  Maybe. Like I said, they're an-"

"Caspian, I know exactly where they are, and why."

Caspian panicked, unsure of what to say. "Stiles didn't get your curly fries!"

"You think that gonna distract him?" Stiles asked. "Anyways, he's not supposed to eat fries, especially the curly ones."

"He's carrying a deadly weapon, I'd give him the curly fries," Caspian says.

"If you think getting rid of contractions in all your sentences makes your argument any more legitimate, you. are. wrong." Stiles argued.

"Stiles!" Noah scolded. "Caspian, how long will they be gone? Do you know when they will be coming back?"

"Unit one, do you copy?" The dispatcher over the radio asked.

Noah sighed, turning to Caspian. "After this, we are talking." He turned, slapping Stiles's hand away from the radio. "Unit one, copy."

"Got a report of a possible one-eight-seven."

Stiles head snapped over to his father, excitedly. "A murder?"

"You are a psycho," Caspian tells him.

"Yeah. Well, you're gonna have to accept it. You're living with us."

Caspian was about to give a sarcastic reply on how he already basically already lived there, stopping when he realized what Stiles said. "Wait, what?"

"Stay here," Noah ordered when they arrived at the scene. Then he opened his door, exiting the car.

"What did you mean?" Caspian leaned over to Stiles.

"Caspian, your parents are never home. If you don't stay with Scott, you stay at my house. And you are always making excuses as to why your parents never show up, like, at parent teacher conference . Or, your graduation." Stiles explained. "Plus,  Derek confirmed that you were lying."

Caspian's eyes drifted away, looking out the window. "Is that Lydia and Jackson?" He questioned when he had seen Jackson yelling at Noah.

Stiles shook his head. "You can't distract-"

Caspian opened the door, exiting the car.

"Caspian!" Stiles scolded as he went to stop the other. He froze when seeing that Caspian wasn't lying, Lydia and Jackson were sitting in the ambulance.

"Which kind of blow a my mind since it should be a pretty basic concept to grasp for a minimum-wage rent-a-cop like you!" Jackson yelled at Noah. "Okay, now. I wanna go home!"

Caspian shoved the other, making him stumble back.

"Caspian," Noah called, gently grabbing him by his shoulders.

"How about i put you in the ground?" Caspian threatened.

"Wow, is that a dead body?" Stiles questioned aloud.

Jackson tire his glaring eyes from Caspian to look at the dead-body. As has everyone else. Noah sighed, turning to look at Stiles. "Everybody back up. Back up."

"So..." Caspian started when Noah had said that he wanted to speak to him. Except, the older man seemed to not know what to say. "Stiles said that I'll be living with you? Was that Stiles being Stiles? Planning to kidnap me, again?"

"Caspian, you have to know that it isn't right that your parents leaving you alone for days on end is-"

"Noah," Caspian interrupted. "It really isn't a big deal. They are-"

"They've been gone for almost a month, Caspian." Noah had recently discovered it, disappointed when he hadn't discovered it before.

Caspian had only recently began friends with Stiles and Scott, regardless, he felt as if he should have known.

Caspian said nothing.

"Tomorrow, we'll go to your house, get your things-"

"Get my things?" Caspian asked.

"Both, Melissa and I have thought that you could live with one of us. Your choice."

"Melissa knows?" Caspian asked. "Does Scott?"

Noah saw the panic on his face. "Yes, they know-"

Caspian let his head hit the table. "Great. This is wonderful. Now, my only two friends know that my parents couldn't give two shits about me."

Noah was going to shoot the Thaddeus adults.

"Caspian!" Scott yelled, chasing done the younger one in the hall. "Caspian!"

Caspian turned around, seeing the sad look on Scott's face. "Hey, you should really get to class."

"I-are you okay?" Scott asked, sounding worried. He glanced over his shoulder, meeting Allison's eyes.

"You didn't tell her, did you?" Caspian quickly asked.

"What? No! I just found out last night. I-I was worried about you. Um," Scott debated on telling Caspian the real reason he had turned back to Allison. Maybe, Allison wouldn't be upset. He wouldn't tell her about Caspian's parents. "Just, Allison and I are going to skip. But, then I saw you-"

"You're going to skip? What? Why? Why make me an accomplice to this? I don't want to lie to your mother!"

"Are you okay?" Scott asked again.

"I don't get why everyone is making such a big deal about it! It's only been a month."

Scott's face falls-which, Caspian didn't know it could look any sadder-. "It's been a month?"

Shit. Fuck. "I-Noah said that Melissa and you knew."

"Yeah. My mom told me that you're parents haven't been home recently. But, she didn't tell me how long. Caspian-"

"Are we going?" Allison grinned as she walked up to the two. "Hey, Caspian."

"Actually-" Scott started.

"See you! Gotta get to class before the bell rings!" Caspian ran off.

"Wait, Caspian-" Scott reached out to stop him from running.

Stiles told Caspian that they would be visiting Lydia Martian.

"Lydia, honey, there's a Stiles and Caspian to see you," Lydia's mother says.

"What the hell is a 'Stiles'? And Casper?" She questioned, silly. "Like the friendly ghost?"

Mrs. Martian nervously chuckled. "She took a little something to ease her nerves.  You can..you can go in."

"Thanks." Stiles told the woman.

Caspian nodded to her as she walked away. Lydia turned around, a few strange of hair in her face, a hand on her hip. "What are you two doing here?"

"We were just making sure you were okay," Stiles explained.

Lydia hummed, licking her lips, more hair fell into her face. "Why?" She questioned, turning back.  She tapped the bed.

"Uh..." Stiles nervously chuckled as he moved to sit on the bed.  "Because I was worried about you today. How are you feeling?"

Lydia reached out, running her hand down Stiles's arm. "I feel fantastic." She moved up, face inches away from Stiles's.

Once again, Stiles nervously laughed. "Oh!" He leaned forward, grasping the pill bottles. "What..." he looked back at Lydia. "I bet you can't say; I saw Suzy Sutton' in a shoeshine shop" ten times fast."

Lydia quirked an eyebrow at him. "I saw Shuzy...I shaw..."she tried again, then loosing the cheerful and playful mood as she leaned away. "I saw..."

"Are you okay?" Caspian asked, moving to crouch in front of her. She didn't turn to look at him. "What? Lydia, what did you see?"

"Something."

"Something like...like a mountain lion?" Stiles asked.

"A mountain lion," she repeated, slowly.

"Are you sure you saw a mountain lion, or are you just saying that because that's what the police told you?" Stiles questioned.

Lydia's voice came out dazed. "A mountain lion..."

Caspian reached for the giraffe, lifting it to get the girl's attention. "What's this?"

"A mountain lion..."

"Okay, you're so drunk..." Stiles sighed, making Lydia turn to him. Lydia's head fell into Stiles's lap. "Oh!" Stiles exclaimed.

Caspian hit his leg, standing up and he gently lifted Lydia's shoulders and head, moving her back onto the bed.

It was quite. For a while. Caspian had thrown a blanket over Lydia, shifting her to be more on the bed.

"Well," Stiles spoke, as he was now standing up. "We're gonna go. Uh, I'll bet you get back to the whole post-traumatic stress thing." Stiles says as he walked towards the door, about to close it as he waited for Caspian to leave the room.

"Stay," Lydia speaks lowly.

Stiles opened the door again, looking back, only seeing a Caspian. "Me? Stay? You want me to stay?"

Lydia hummed, nodding as she sat up again. She patted the bed.

Stiles followed.

"Yes, please," she leaned closer to him.

"Uh, Stiles, I don't think-" Caspian spoke.

"Stay." Lydia lifted a hand up, stroking Stiles's face. Before she lifted her other hand, stroking the other side of his face. "Please. Jackson."

Stiles clicked his tongue, the shock and happiness no longer being evident on his face. "And we're done here."

Lydia had fallen back, asleep. Caspian frowned, once again, she was close to the edge. Her phone began to ring. "You want me to get that?" Stiles asked the unconscious girl before he leaned over.

Caspian moved over again, gently pulling the girl closer to the middle of the bed.

"It's a text," Stiles told her. "I don't know how to-" he stopped, bringing the phone closer to his face. "Caspian! Caspian!" Stiles whisper-yelled.

Caspian had thrown the blanket over Lydia again, looking up. "Yeah?"

Stiles showed Caspian the phone, on the screen, played a video of the Alpha jumping out of the store window. "Shit."

Stiles had called Scott, only to be left at voice mail. "Hey, it's me again. Look, I found something, and I don't know what to do, okay? So, if you could turn your phone on right now, that'd be great! Or else, I'll kill you. Do you understand me? I'm gonna kill you. And I'm too upset to come up with a witty description about how exactly I'm gonna kill you, but I'm just gonna do it, okay? I'm gonna-- ugh! Goodbye." Stiles groaned, sitting in his seat. "God!"

Noah leaned against the doorway, having just walked up to the room. "Please tell me I'm gonna hear good news at this parent-teacher thing tonight."

Stiles hesitates. "...Depends on how you define "good news.""

Noah, unamused, crossed his arms. "I define it as you getting straight-A's with no behavioral issues."

"...You might wanna rethink that definition."

The man sighed. "Enough said. Caspian, how about you?"

"You're gonna to my parent-teacher conference?" Caspian questioned, shocked.

"Melissa and I will be, yes," Noah says.

"Oh..." Caspian speaks, unsure of what to say. His parents never went to his parent-teacher conference. "My grades are okay."

Noah smiled, joking about having to worry about one kid.

Stiles turns his attention back to his phone, muttering. "Come on, Scott. Where the hell are you?"

"Sheriff, Ms. MCCall," the teacher speaks, surprised to see the two. He looked back at his list, he knew that the two had kids, one son, each. Both being in their sophomore year. "I believe you have the wrong room-"

"We're here for Caspian Thaddeus," Melissa says, sitting down.

He stared for a moment. "You're here for Caspian?" He questioned.

"His parents are out of town," Noah says. And the second they enter Beacon Hills, they will be arrested.

"Okay." The teacher replied, and yeah, he's heard the youngest student say how he spends a lot of time at the MCCall and Stilinski household. Plus, Caspian didn't speak to other students. Only Scott MCCall and Stiles Stilinski. "Academically, Caspian's one of the finest students I've ever had."

Obviously, the two though, but didn't say.

"He holds the highest grade in my class. However, socially...he doesn't socialize with the other students. Other, then your sons."

"We'll, I don't see-" Melissa smiled, although she was concerned on how Caspian would be when Scott and Stiles would graduated. And he'd be alone for a year.

"When I assigned a group work project, he tried to convince a student that they didn't need to work together. That he could do the project on his own. All so he wouldn't have to spend some time with another student."

Melissa and Noah glanced at each other.
