49. "you're my home"
{emma pov}
concert day
"Honey, are you ready to go?" my mom calls to me from the kitchen.
I take a deep breath. The last show of the tour is today, and all my friends and family are coming.
I'm wearing a simple peach coloured blouse and some pre-ripped light coloured jean shorts, along with my white converse.
I get outside and into the car, and so does my mom, carrying my guitar.
"Did you forget something?" She asks, smile on her face.
"Yes! Oh, what would I do without you?"
"You would forget your guitar on the night of your big show!" She laughs, and I laugh too.
"Well, thank you." I smile.
"That's what moms are for." she says as she starts to drive away, towards Shawn's house.
I turn up the radio, and sing along to every song that comes on.
Once we get to Shawn's, I get to the door and Karen answers.
"Hi Karen." I smile, waving slightly.
"Hi, Emma. How are you sweetie?" She asks, pulling me in for a half hug.
"I'm actually doing very well, thank you." I say as I sit down on the step so that I can take off my shoe.
"That's great news," she smiles again. "Shawn's upstairs, he should be down soon. Aaliyah and Manny are in the living room."
"Okay, thank you!"
Karen and my mom talk while I make my way over to the living room. Since the crutches make some noise, they both stop watching whatever's on the TV and look at me.
"EMMA!" Aaliyah hops off the couch and runs over to me.
"Aaliyah!" I say as I give her an awkward hug.
"Hi, Emma. How are you doing?" Manny asks.
"Much better, thanks," I smile.
I feel someone's arms creep around my shoulders and drape around my neck. His head rests on top of mine. "Boo," he says.
"Hi," I say, "You didn't scare me."
"I know," he smirks as I look up at him. "Wanna go to the other room?" He asks quietly and I nod.
He takes me to the other room, it's more private and blocked off.
"Hey, I've, um, realized something." I say after I've sat down on one of the couches and he sits on the one that is parallel to the one I'm sitting in.
"What have you realized, baby girl?"
"I do need you. I've needed you this whole time and I'll skip the explanation because I know you know what I'm going to say anyways."
"I knew you'd come to your senses eventually," he smirks.
"Don't flatter yourself, Mendes," I joke.
He doesn't say anything else, just comes over onto the same couch as me, cups my face in his hand, and kisses me. When our lips connect it feels like my whole world is being lifted back up. Like I'm home again.
"You're my home," I say as I pull away and bite my lip, smiling. I look into his eyes and he gives me a warm smile, then connects our lips again.
"Awe, the lovebirds are back," someone coos, and I look over to see none other than my mom standing in the doorway.
"Mom," I groan, my cheeks flushing.
Her and Shawn both laugh. "Well, you two should get going so you can make it in time for the meet and greet,"
"Yeah, you're right," I smile at her. "Wouldn't want those crazy fans of yours starting a riot," I laugh, ruffling his hair.
"Okay, let's get going then," he smiles. "I'll race you to the- Oh, yeah. Bad idea." he laughs, remembering I'm crippled.
"I still bet I could beat you on these crutches," I say.
"Let's... not," my mom grimaces, putting her hands up defensively towards me.
"I was kidding mom, it's okay," I smile.
We say bye to everyone, they're going to come a bit later. We make it out to Shawn's jeep and he helps me in.
"So, do you want to do something special for our last show tonight?" he asks.
"Hmm, do you have any ideas?"
"I was thinking we could do a duet or two," he proposes.
"That sounds lovely," I smile. We discuss the two songs we'll do, then I notice Mercy has come on the radio. "You've got a hold of me, don't even know your power,"
I belt out the lyrics and Shawn just shakes his head. "Oh no," I can see a faint blush creep onto those beautiful cheeks of his.
I sing every word, then Shawn gives in and starts belting the words with me. "I'm saying baby please have mercy on me, take it easy on my heart. Even though you don't mean to hurt me, you keep tearing me apart,"
When the song finishes, I high five him. That was fun. We arrive at the arena, and we park in the back to avoid any sort of issues.
"And we made it." he says, pulling onto the breaks.
I unbuckle my seatbelt, and he comes around and opens my door. I situate my crutches, then he lifts me under the arms and helps me out of the car and onto my feet-well, foot.
We walk inside the back doors of the huge building, and find the dressing rooms. We've made it with lots of time before the meet and greet, so we go to the room where they'll be held and make sure everything is ready to go.
But since I've never been to one of these things before, so I just kinda stand off to the side while Shawn makes sure everything was in place.
I'm sure the fans are already here too, because, if I were meeting my idol, I would be here hours before, just to make sure everything goes right. I'm freaky like that.
"Okay, everyone," Andrew says to everyone in the room, including Shawn, Geoff, me, the security guards, and the person who I assume is the photographer, but I think they use the fan's cameras since I don't see one here. "We're going to get started in five minutes, so please be ready."
Five minutes pass, and they let the first fan in. She screams when she sees him, even cries, and runs into his embrace. He's smiling the whole time. They take a few pictures, then the next one comes in. The same thing goes for the rest of them, until one.
She comes in, squeals as she hugs Shawn, and they take some pictures.
"Hi Emma, Geoff," she smiles.
"Hey," I smile back. She's the only one so far who's said hi to us.
"Emma, would you mind coming in for a photo?" she asks.
"No, of course not! I'd be honoured, what's your name?" I ask, and make my way over.
"I'm Bea," she smiles. I stand on one side of her while Shawn stands on the other, and I hand my crutches to Geoff so that those ugly things aren't in the photo.
We take some photos, and they all turn out pretty cute I think. "Hey, what's your instagram?" I ask with a smile. I figure I'll do something for her now that she did something for me.
"Oh my god, really?" she squeals and I nod. "Okay, it's @woofmendes"
I search it and click follow. it's She beams, she seems so happy. I love making people happy.
"Bye Emma! Bye Shawn! Thank you so much!" she smiles as she walks out.
Once she leaves, Shawn follows her twitter as well.
All of the fans are so sweet, and he looks so happy when he's talking to them. I mean, these are the people who got him here but it makes me happy to see him this happy.
"Do you want me to get them to pull up a stool for you onstage while I do sound check?" Shawn asks me as we walk to the dressing rooms.
"You're allowed to do that?" I raise an eyebrow.
"Well, it's not really formal and it is the last show. The fans won't mind." he smiles. "Plus you can sing something too."
"Okay, I'd like that. Thank you."
"Anything for my baby girl." he coos.
Sound check starts, and I am sitting on a stool beside Shawn like he mentioned. They even set up a separate microphone for me.
Shawn was right, it's not very formal at all. He makes a lot of jokes, and talks in between songs. Sometimes he even gets the fans to ask some questions.
"Emma, what happened to your leg?" One of them asks. I freeze, and look at Shawn. He gives me a look that tells me that I can tell them if I want.
"Oh, just a minor car accident, I'm okay now though," I smile.
"I'm sorry, I hope you feel better soon." she says back.
"Hey, Emma why don't you sing something next?" Shawn raises an eyebrow.
"No thanks, I'm o-" I start.
"Who thinks that Emma should sing something?" He asks the fans. They all cheer. "Majority rules."
I send him a glare. "Okay, um, I guess I'll sing Scars To Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara," I smile.
One of the people from the crew comes and hands me my guitar. "Thank you." I smile at them.
"She just wants to be beautiful
she goes unnoticed, she knows
no limits, she craves attention
she praises an image, she prays
to be sculpted by a sculptor,
Oh she don't see the light that's shining,
deeper than the eyes can find it,
maybe we have made her blind so
she tries to cover up her pain
and cut her woes away
cause cover girls don't cry
after their face is made
But there's a hope that's waiting
for you in the dark
you should know you're beautiful
just the way you are
and you don't have to change a thing
the world can change its heart
no scars to your beautiful
we're stars and we're beautiful, oh
woah, woah, woah
and you don't have to change a thing
the world can change its heart
no scars to your beautiful
we're stars and we're beautiful, oh
She has dreams to be an envy so she's
starving you know, cover girls eat nothing, she says, sing it for me"
I stop singing, letting them sing the next few lines.
"Beauty is pain and there's beauty in everything,
what's a little while longer?
I can go a little while longer,"
"She fades away, she don't see her perfect,
she don't understand she's worth it,
oh that beauty goes deeper than the surface, oh, oh,
so to all the girls that's hurting,
let me be your mirror,
help you see a little bit clearer,
the light that shines within,"
After I finish singing, Shawn sings a few more songs then we go back to the dressing rooms to get ready for the show.
My stylist comes in, and I sit down at the vanity so I can get my hair and makeup done. She flat-irons my hair, then puts half of it up into a cute messy bun on the top of my head.
She then moves on to my makeup, she does a nice look with natural colours and thin winged eye liner. She adds some false lashes to finish off the look.
"And there we go! Your outfit is right here. You're gonna kill it tonight, girl." She says before walking out of the room.
"Thank you so much." I smile while going over to the clothes that were picked out for me, and I put it on. It's a white skin-tight long sleeved crop top that shows my shoulders, with some lace mint green shorts. On my feet there's these long taupe suede boots that go up to above my knees. I can only wear the left one though, because I can't put it over the cast.
I pop some gum in my mouth so that my breath doesn't stink, and go to find Shawn. I find him in his dressing room, where he's talking with Geoff. He's on the couch facing away from me, and I go up behind him and give him a kiss on the cheek, then go around the couch to sit beside him.
"Hey babe." He smiles as he puts his arm around me. "You look amazing as always." he winks and pokes me in the stomach, making me yell in pain.
"Ow, are you trying to murder me?"
"That didn't hurt, stop being dramatic," he rolls his eyes.
I glare at him. "It actually did."
"Whatever, you're just being dramatic."
"I'm not going to fight with you on this," I sigh, then laugh.
A few minutes later, we leave to go get in our places. The concert is starting in 10 minutes. The set list is the same as normal, and our duets will be right before the finale. (Which is Stitches, obviously.)
When it's time for me to go on, I give Shawn a hug.
"Guess what I'm gonna say." he says.
"Hmm, let me think," I say, pretending not to know. "Break a-"
"Break a leg," he hugs me from behind, then sneak-attacks me with tickles. I laugh. "Now go perform," he laughs.
Here we go.
