35. "i'm so sorry"

{emma pov}

"Are you nervous?" Shawn asks me as we stand in a local coffee shop, waiting.

"Yeah I am, but I can do this," I say, nodding my head.

"I know you can," he smiles, kissing my forehead.

Right then, I see the person who I came here to meet parking his car. "Bye Shawn," I kiss him on the lips lightly.

"Bye, baby. Be strong, I'll see you soon," he lets go of me and walks out the door.

I fix my hair quickly and stand in line as he is walking in the door. "Hey," he says nonchalantly.

"Hey, how are you?" I smile.

"I'm okay, you?" he asks.

"Pretty good, thanks," I smile.

We order our drinks then sit down at one of the tables. "So what did you want to talk to me about?" he asks.

"Well lately, I've been thinking. And I've realized that," I say in a soft voice, then put my shoulders back and make myself look confident. "That I'm not afraid of you, Dylan. What you did to me was completely wrong and also very illegal. And because of what you did to me, I am now suffering from anxiety and depression, and I guess I just wanted you to know. That I'm not afraid of you anymore."

"You know what, Emma? You wanna know what I think?" I nod, ready to take on whatever he's about to say to me. "You've always been the type to want your perfect life, and to have your prince charming. And you finally got him. I want you to know that I'm done messing with you. I'm completely done, okay? Shawn will treat you better than I ever could, and I want you to know that I never, ever meant for things to get this bad. I don't know what I was thinking, I was being such an asshole."

"Accurate," I nod.

"I need you to know that I'm-I'm sorry, Emma," he says, scratching the back of his neck.

"Wow, I never, ever, thought I'd hear those words come out of your mouth," I raise an eyebrow, clearly stunned.

"Well, anyone can change, can't they?" he laughs.

"Did I really just experience this? Did Dylan Connor really change his ways?" I gasp.

"I think I really did," he smiles.

I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket, indicating that I'm getting a phone call. I see on the screen that it's Shawn. "Sorry, I've gotta take this," I say and he nods.

I walk over to the other side of the small building, and answer the phone.

"Hey, thank god you're okay, I thought he strangled you or something," Shawn laughs.

"No, Shawn stop worrying, it's only been 10 minutes!" I giggle. "But I did tell him everything! Oh and get this - he actually apologized, and said that he never meant for things to go this far. I think he really has changed a bit." I whisper, and nod to myself.

"Wow, Dylan apologizing? Could've never seen that happening," he says.

"Yeah, I was surprised," I smile. "Anyways, I should be done soon, we're just finishing up."

"Okay," he says, then hangs up. I walk back over to the table, and sit back down.

"Sorry, that was Shawn," I smile. "I should probably get going, but thanks for meeting me."

"Not a problem, I was in the area anyways."

"Bye Dylan, thank you," I smile awkwardly.

"Bye, Emma. I'm so sorry again for everything. I never meant for things to get that bad."

"Apology accepted." I smile, then awkwardly walk away and outside to call Shawn to let him know that I'm ready. A minute or so later, I see him walking around the corner on the other end of the building. As soon as I see him, I sprint towards him and when I reach him, I hop up onto him, wrapping my legs around his waist.

We hug there for awhile. "I'm so proud of you, I always knew you could do it," he mumbles into my shoulder. I pull my face back to look at him. "Baby why are you crying?" he pouts, wiping a tear from my cheek.

"I don't know, I guess I'm just really happy that it's finally over," I smile, sniffling. "But I'm also kinda scared that it won't have cured my illness or something."

"Hey, it's okay, you stayed strong and stuck up for yourself, that's what's important. You're becoming so much stronger, Emma. I'm seeing it. That's what's going to make you better."

"You're seeing it? Really?" I ask.

"Yeah, I am," he smiles, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear. He gives me a short kiss on the lips, then pulls away. "I think we need to go for some victory ice cream, don't you?"

"Definitely," I nod my head, "Wow, I feel so tall, I've always wanted to see what it's like to experience life from above Shawn Mendes' point of view." I laugh.

"So are you gonna get off of me so I can walk, or?" he chuckles.

"Nah, I'll pass," I laugh. "I'm kidding," I peck him on the lips and hop off of him. "Now I feel even shorter than I was before," I pout.

"Quit frowning or a birdie is gonna come poop on your lip," Shawn laughs.

"Shawn?"

"Yeah?"

"Shut up,"

"Hey mom," I say into my phone.

"Hi honey, how have you been?" she asks. She knows about everything that happened, I have been keeping her up to date on everything, and Shawn did while I was in the hospital and not able to contact her myself.

"Great, Mom. I talked to Dylan today," I smile to myself. She also knew about the therapy and the plan to see Dylan.

"Oh really? How did it go?" She asks anxiously.

"Even better than expected, he actually said that he was sorry and that he didn't mean for it to go that far."

"Wow he apologized? That's unlike him," she laughs. "Honey I'm so proud of you."

"Thanks, Mom. I still can't believe I actually did it."

"I know, I'm so so proud of you. Hey, by the way, have you been talking to Rachel at all? She hasn't come over lately to talk to us like she used to."

"Mom... Rachel's been acting really weird lately. She hadn't been texting me so I did, and she started making rude remarks about new friends and stuff. I haven't had a chance to try and deal with it yet, or I would've at least tried something."

"Awe, sweetie, I'm sure she'll come to her senses, she's probably just feeling off or something, how long has it been like this?" She asks.

"I dunno, a week or two, maybe?" I estimate.

"That's unlike her, but I'm sure everything will go back to normal soon."

"I sure hope so," I sigh. "So, how's the rest of the fam?" I ask, changing the subject.

"We're great! Ryan won his hockey tournament yesterday! Oh-wait, I think he wanted to tell you, act surprised when he does."

"Okay, Mom," I laugh.

"Ry?" Mom yells. I hear a faint reply. "Em's on the phone, do you want to tell her your news?" She pauses, probably getting an answer from him, then speaks again. "He's coming down,"

"Hi Emma," he says.

"Hey Ry! How are you? I hear you have some pretty exciting news to tell me."

"Yeah, are you ready?" he asks.

"Yep, I'm ready," I smile to myself.

"We won our hockey tournament!!!" he yells. He sounds so happy.

"Wow, Ryan that's amazing! I'm so proud of you!!" I yell. "I wish I could give you a big hug right now."

"Thanks! Me too, I really miss you, sis."

"Awe, Ry, I miss you too," I pout. "but I'll be home before you know it."

"Yeah, that's what you always say and it still feels like forever," he says and I pout. "So anyways, how's my famous sister?"

"I'm not famous," I laugh slightly.

"Of course you are! You're on tour with Shawn Mendes and you're dating him! Mom, is Emma famous?" he asks her and I roll my eyes, smiling.

I hear her answer in the background. "Yeah, she is."

"See? Mom says you are, and now she's crying," he giggles.

"Awe, Mom don't cry!" I pout. "But Ry, I'm doing pretty well, my dreams have finally come true, what else can I say?"

"I'll talk to her now Ryan, you can go get ready for bed, it's late" I hear her say to him in the background.

"Bye sis!"

"Bye, Ryan. I love you."

"Love you too," he says and hands the phone off to my mom.

"I'm just so proud of you, I can't handle it."

"Mom..."

"Honey, you've accomplished so much, you need to be proud of yourself too."

"I am, it's just that I haven't even accomplished much at all compared to Shawn! And I'm not saying that I'm jealous or that I need that or anything, but compared to him, I've-"

"That's not the point. If you go along your whole life comparing yourself to others and what they have accomplished that you haven't, you will have one tough life."

"Mom, that's not what I-"

"And I just need you to see that you've come a long way. That we're all so so proud of you."

"I know, that's not what I was trying to say, I know I've accomplished a lot but I'm just saying that Shawn has accomplished a lot too, and he's kind of the reason I'm here right now." I explain.

"Okay, I see what you're trying to say. Now, it's getting late here, so I need to go tuck Ryan in. Goodnight, Em."

"Goodnight, Mom, I love you," I smile.

"I love you too, have a good sleep."

"You too," I hang up the phone.

"She's right," I hear from the other side of the room.

I instantly jerk my head up to see who it is. "Oh, hey babe, you scared me."

"Sorry," he smiles. I pat the spot beside me on the bed, and he sits. I cuddle right into his chest. "I wasn't trying to listen in on your conversation or anything, but I couldn't help but overhear some of it. But she's right, Emma, you should be proud of yourself. You're amazing and talented and wonderful, and not to mention my beautiful girlfriend. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"I don't know what I'd do without you either," I smile up at him. "I wouldn't be here for sure," I laugh and he laughs as well.

"We're heading to San Antonio tomorrow, we should go camping for a few days after the show," Shawn suggests.

"Umm..."

"What?" he laughs.

"I was trying to forget about that idea... I really don't want to..." I bite my lip.

"Hey, we made a deal, remember? And Cali is coming up, if you want to go to the beach..." he persuades me.

"Okay fine," I sigh. "But we're gonna get eaten by bears."

"Don't be delusional, we are not going to get eaten by bears," Shawn laughs, but I keep a serious face.

"I'm serious," I say with an eyebrow raised.

"No, I think you're just exhausted, lets get ready for bed," he laughs.

"Whatever, but I'm not being delusional, it's gonna happen."

"Okay, whatever floats your boat."

I get up from the bed and go to my suitcase to pick out what I'll wear to bed. I pick out Shawn's sweater and some booty shorts.

"Nice sweater," Shawn winks.

"What are you still doing here?" I ask, giggling slightly.

"I'm your boyfriend, don't I get the privilege of watching you get changed?" he smirks.

"Don't push your luck, Mendes," I glare at him jokingly.

"So does that mean-" I cut him off.

"Yes, that means no, now get out," I laugh, rolling my eyes and dragging him up, pushing him out the door. Boys will be boys.
