Chapter eighty nine - The Final Snap

A/N: you ask and I deliver <3

...

You practically felt your memories rushing from your mind into Loki's, like some sort of dam that had been waiting to burst.

It felt good. You were even lighter now, lighter than you had been even when the void in your chest had disappeared. Opening your eyes, you realised that at some point you'd both leaned forward to push your foreheads together. Loki looked pale as a ghost.

You sat up straight slowly, watching him in slight trepidation.

Are you okay?

Mother of all things holy that felt good. That felt right. Someone on the other end of the line to receive your thoughts. This was how it should be. How it should have been for the longest time.

Loki heard all of this. He opened his eyes and raised his head to look at you and you cursed yourself for being so stupid. How could you ever have thought for a second that he wouldn't love you anymore?

His mind was a messy torrent of memories and emotions, both his and yours, mostly yours, but there was one emotion shining through everything with an intensity that was almost overwhelming.

It was this emotion which caused him to grab your face in his hands and kiss you, hard. It was this emotion which caused you to kiss him back with all the love and fervour of someone who hadn't seen their soulmate; their best friend, for five long, awful years.

You were whole again.

Only the sound of Carol Danvers exploding through the side of an enormous spaceship could have drawn you from that kiss, and that's exactly what did. You pulled away and turned your gaze to the sky to watch as the bright white light which you hadn't yet identified as Carol went smashing through the side of Thanos' ship and then circled back for another round.

When you looked back at Loki, your face wet with tears, he was staring at his strand of hair which you'd braided into yours, holding it in his hand. His mind was racing; you didn't even attempt to try and keep up.

We need to go.

You would never communicate with him by speech again. This was the best thing ever. You'd forgotten what it had been like. Loki looked up at you and smiled, really smiled this time, dropping the strand of hair back to your shoulder.

Now he could feel how much you'd missed him, and still loved him. You didn't need to tell him.

I know.

He got to his feet and pulled you after him.

Are you sure you're okay?

Yes. It's a lot but... yes. Are you?

I have quite literally never been better.

An odd thing to say given the fact that your lives and the lives of everyone you cared about were in imminent danger. But you felt good, and you were going to win. You knew it.

Ready?

Yes.

And then you were both back in the middle of the fighting.

You'd lost your sword when you'd been flung backwards by the explosion from the ship so you were back to using your magic, but that was okay. You felt strong. You would find the sword later. Loki's mind was still buzzing with your memories, so having access to his thoughts wasn't a bonus quite yet.

You'd give him a minute.

An unspecified amount of time later you caught sight of Peter hurtling over your head clutching the gauntlet. You tore the Chitauri in front of you in half with your magic and then teleported after him, simultaneously letting Loki know what you were doing. You weren't sure if he'd heard you.

A second later you were up to your neck in monsters who were trying to get at Peter, who was obviously being targeted because he had the gauntlet. Was there even a plan? Where or who were you meant to be getting it to?

An immensely powerful flash of energy suddenly wiped out every single monster within a fifty foot radius of you, and you were almost knocked off of your feet because of it. You magic died at your hands as you rushed towards Peter, who had seconds previously been buried beneath a huge pile of monsters.

"Peter! Are you okay?" you asked, crouching down before him. What a stupid question. He was flat on his back, arms wrapped tight around the gauntlet, white as a sheet and covered in blood.

"Y/N?" he croaked, his voice shaking, before his gaze moved to someone, or something, stood behind you. You whipped around, but it was only Carol. She was glowing. That explained the lack of monsters around you.

"Hi." you said, suddenly feeling rather feeble and powerless stood next to her. Carol acknowledged you with a nod, before turning to Peter.

"Hi. I'm- Peter Parker." Peter said shakily.

"Hey Peter Parker. You got something for me?" Carol asked him. Peter winced as he struggled to his feet and handed Carol the gauntlet.

Y/N?

You couldn't help it, you smiled.

Yes?

Where are you?

With the gauntlet.

Can you not be with the gauntlet?

Don't worry, I think we're trying to get rid of it.

Carol surged past you in a flash of light, and then she and the gauntlet were lost in the battle. You turned to Peter.

"Is there a plan?"

"Yeah, someone said about getting it to the van? But I haven't seen any van..."

That made sense. If you could get it to Scott's van you could send it back in time, away from here. You were about to reply to Peter when he was suddenly almost knocked off of his feet by something large, red and solid. You magic was at your hands in an instant, but then you realised that it had only been Tony.

"Kid- kid-"

You had about two seconds to smile at the scene unfolding before you before there were more monsters upon you. One of them caught you off guard and you fell awkwardly to one side, feeling pain shoot up your calf into your hip. The monster was dead in the next instant.

You okay?

Yes.

That didn't feel okay.

I'm fine. Did you know there are Sakaarians here?

No.

Fighting against us. Lucky we didn't stay there.

I hardly imagine we would have become supporters of Thanos had we stayed there.

We might-

A blinding pain shot through your head suddenly and you doubled over in pain, your mist flying up around you. What was happening? Was Loki okay?

When you looked up it was to see Ebony Maw staring at you. Your blood ran cold.

You feel a strong hatred towards me. Why, I wonder? What did I do to you in the years to come?

The pain was getting stronger; you couldn't hear Loki anymore. This was an Ebony Maw who hadn't met you yet.

You and the trickster are close. Is it because of what I did to him during his time under Thanos' rule?

Anger burnt beneath the surface. A monster flew at you, and the pain in your head was such that you barely managed to deflect it with your magic.

Shall I show you some memories? That might be f-

Ebony Maw didn't get to finish his thought before there was a burst of machine gun fire and one side of his head exploded in a mess of blood and- you didn't watch long enough to see what else.

He keeled over and hit the ground, dead in an instant.

You blinked at the ground, your head spinning wildly. Then you looked up.

Bucky was stood a few feet away from Ebony Maw, wielding two massive machine guns with a large smile on his face.

"Alright doll?" he grinned. Your face split into the widest smile you'd attempted in five years.

"Bucky."

You wanted to run to him, but then there were more monsters everywhere and you had to settle for shooting him a gigantic grin in return, unsure if he'd seen or not.

Y/N!

Ouch. That had been a loud thought. You hadn't realised that Loki had been trying to talk to you. Maybe this was going to take some getting used to. Re-getting used to.

What?

What happened? Are you okay? It hurt- you went quiet-

I'm fine. Sorry. Good news, Maw is dead again.

Oh. Good.

Any sign of the gauntlet?

Not yet- only that red witch trying to take Thanos on by herself.

Wanda?

I don't know.

You were beginning to tire again, so you stopped talking to Loki. He understood. You cast around for another sword but had no such luck this time, only dead bodies on the floor around you.

Time blurred again, and your head began to grow foggy. Half of you had wanted to get to fight Thanos again, but you didn't think that you were in a fit state at the moment. Everything hurt.

I hope you're joking.

You smiled through the pain. Pain was such a relative term. This was physical pain, you ached, but compared to the emotional turmoil you'd gone through? You were practically immune to pain at this point. Nothing could hurt you as much as that had.

Nothing.

When the first monster in front of you turned to dust, it took you a few seconds to process what you were seeing. You just stopped and frowned at the ashes in confusion for a second.

Y/N-

Fear, awful, gut-wrenching, heart stopping fear tore through your chest and lodged itself deep into your heart. You couldn't breathe for a moment, and then another, and another... it was happening again, Thanos had won again... and then Loki was in front of you, grabbing your arms.

He was saying something, shaking you gently.

"Y/N it's okay. It's okay. Look."

You looked. And then you could breathe, grabbing for Loki's arm three times before you actually made contact with it.

It was just Thanos' army that were disappearing. Everyone else was just stood, watching in amazement as the monsters and creatures that had been attacking you all fell away into dust. You pressed yourself against Loki firmly, not letting yourself think about the last time that this had happened. The worst day of your life.

You'd won.

You felt a split second of immense relief, before you heard wails from across the battlefield and relief was replaced with fear. Was everyone okay? You had Loki, he was fine at least. But you needed to find the others.

Who put on the gauntlet?

You hadn't even thought about that. Who had snapped? You were starting to panic, you needed to know that everyone was okay. Where to even start? You were too scared to follow the crying. Now you'd stopped moving you were starting to feel your injuries. And Loki's.

Y/N, I'm sure everyone's okay-

I need to find them.

"Brother?"

You and Loki both turned to see Thor walking slowly towards you, a look of utter disbelief on his face which almost matched the shock Loki felt as he saw Thor. He looked different even to you as you saw him: his long hair was tied back and braided and he was wielding Stormbreaker.

Loki gently detached himself from you and turned to Thor, who immediately trapped Loki in a hug which looked as though it cracked at least two of his ribs right off the mark. Loki hugged him back, emotion radiating from the two of them like nothing you'd ever felt before.

When Thor released Loki and turned to you there were tears pouring down both of your faces.

"I told you we could get him back. I told you." you sobbed into Thor's shoulder, as he bestowed upon you a huge so large that you were lifted off of your feet.

"Do you know who did it?" Thor asked as he set you down, referring to who had snapped Thanos' army away.

"No. Not yet." you told him, wiping your eyes and looking around, terrified to find out what had happened.

"Let's go. We'll find out sooner or later." Loki said, picking your hand up and squeezing it gently. You still couldn't quite believe that he was real, and that Bucky and Peter had been real, or that this was really happening.

I'm here.

I know.

You smiled at each other, and Thor gave a loud hiccup-sob at the sight of you both. He was so happy. So were you. And you didn't want that to change.

Ready?

You nodded and took Thor's hand, and the three of you teleported over to where a crowd had gathered around something... or someone.

There was a great sadness in the air. You didn't want to look, you didn't want to look, you didn't want to look...

You looked.

Nebula was slumped on the floor, lifeless, the gauntlet on her hand.
