Chapter Five
Few weeks passed by and everything was going so well. I was loving my job and I was hanging out with Theo most of the time when I was back home from work. We used to play video games or watch Netflix or simply chill out doing nothing at all. We were both comfortable around each other and I felt like we had become even closer than before.
Grace on the other hand was trying so hard to get any kind of information about him from me. It was even more convenient for her now but at one point it was getting out of hand and I was getting really pissed.
"So you and Theo huh?" Riley, my best friend from high school asked, breaking my chain of thoughts and I choked on my own saliva. We were meeting out for lunch at a small diner near my hospital as I was tired of hanging out with Grace.
It seemed like the only reason she was talking with me nowadays was to get to know more about Theo from me and I really needed a break from that. I know I was sounding like a bitch but this was way too much for me to handle. I was already feeling guilty enough for texting him on her behalf and now doing this felt so wrong. She was supposed to genuinely like him and try to be herself.
"Ewww..no! My friend, Grace is the one who is dating him and we just happen to meet each coincidentally that day." I shrugged casually and she had a sly smile on her lips.
"And you guys coincidentally happened to be neighbors too?" she asked, trying so hard to hide her smile.
"Well, yeah of course. Stop looking at me like I planned all of this." I huffed in annoyance causing her to laugh out loud.
"I'm so sorry but this stuff seems like it's straight out of a romance movie or something. So cliche. I mean, he was your childhood friend/crush and you guys drifted apart and now you saw him after all these years. Oh and let's not forget the main part, he is your fucking neighbor." She sighed, dreamily, making me grimace. I was never the romantic type or anything and I hated the cliche stuff.
"This is not cliche. It's just a fucking coincidence." I mumbled under my breath, poking my steak with my fork a bit too harshly.
"I wish I was in your position. I would be living my romantic fantasy." She grinned, taking a few bites of her food.
"I wonder what Tristan would say about that." I chuckled and she blushed, tucking her hair behind her ears.
"I'm sure none of our fantasies would be romantic. It would all be sex--"
"Ewww, Ri. TMI! I'm eating." I almost yelled and she laughed so hard, holding her stomach while I rested back against my seat and took a deep breath.
"Alright, so what's with this girl, Grace? Are they seriously dating?" she asked after swallowing down her food.
"I don't know. They have been on a couple of dates now and she keeps bugging me for more details about him. What he likes and what he doesn't like, blah, blah, blah. I'm so annoyed." I muttered in an irritated tone and she narrowed her eyes at me.
"And you are sure this annoyance has nothing to do with the tiny crush you had on him long back?" she asked again and I rolled my eyes.
"No, Ri. As you said, it was long back and I don't see him that way anymore. We are just friends and trust me, it would never work." I stated firmly, more like convincing myself than explaining it to her, and continued, "I'm already feeling bad about hiding the fact that it was me who texted him. I'm not going to help her anymore. It's not right."
"That's true. Just let her know that she should be herself if she wants a serious relationship with him." She added and I nodded in agreement with her.
"Yeah, let's hope she does it sooner rather than later and enough about this, how is Abby?" I asked with a huge grin.
"She is good and it looks like she is getting a lot of attention from boys at her school. Tristan, on the other hand, is having a hard time keeping them away from her."
"Oh my god! Seriously?" I asked, trying to control my laugh.
"Yeah, he is like, she is allowed to date only at 20."
"Well damn, I honestly can't imagine Tristan being all fatherly. I think I should tell Abby about her dad's High school scandals." I stated and we both started to laugh so hard.
"What is so funny?" I heard a deep familiar voice and lifted my eyes to see none other than the devil himself.
"Hello to you too, Tristan. We were just talking about your high school sexual encounters." I grinned widely as he pulled a chair beside us.
"Lucy Wilson. It's been a long time. Nice to meet you too." He replied in a sarcastic tone, kissing the side of Riley's head.
"You are late. I'm almost done eating." Riley pouted at him.
"I know and I'm so sorry babycakes. I was caught up at school. Let me make it up to you later tonight." He winked, causing her to blush profusely.
Eww, couples!
But they looked so damn adorable together which made me feel jealous and I felt a tug at my heart.
Maybe it does feel nice to be in a real relationship.
"Ugh! You guys make me lovesick. I'm getting late for my rounds. See you later, Ri and you mister, take care of my best friend and my godchild." I smacked his head lightly and he chuckled in response as I walked away from them.
After my work, I left a little late than usual as there was a birthday celebration for a co-worker at the hospital. Grace was nowhere to be seen during the celebration and I assumed her shift must have ended early. I checked my phone to find no messages from her.
Weird.
She always texts me before leaving work. I decided not to read much into it and started to walk towards my car with my belongings in one hand and a small box that had few slices of leftover cake from the party in the other.
Once I reached my building, I walked towards my door and after dropping off my stuff on the couch, I walked across the hallway to reach his apartment, balancing the cake with one hand. I know he likes blackcurrant flavor and he must be home for sure at this time. I opened the door without knocking as I had a key to his apartment already.
"Dude, I hope you are in the mood for your favorite desse--" I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw him and Grace on the couch, making out like horny teenagers.
Gross!
They immediately pulled apart at the sound of my voice and I felt so disgusted to even stand there. That picture would be etched in my brain forever now.
"Lu! Co-Come on in." He stuttered, giving me a sheepish grin, wiping his mouth while Grace didn't even look me in the eyes and kept adjusting her dress that was all messed up by their 'oh so romantic kiss.'
"Looks like you are already having your dessert," I muttered under my breath and placed the cake on the table that was near the door.
"What?"
"Nothing. So sorry. You guys carry on." I gave them an awkward smile and closed the door immediately behind me, taking a few deep breaths to calm myself.
Why did neither of them tell me about this and most importantly why the hell was I so damn furious?
"Hey, come on in. Please don't tell me that made you uncomfortable." Theo burst out through the door and I turned around to face him. He looked so fucking hot in his white t-shirt and blue jeans, his disheveled hair pointing in different directions and his lips swollen from the kiss.
Her kiss.
"Oh no, it wasn't that. I was heading out anyway and I thought of dropping by the cake since it was blackcurrant flavor and I know how much you like it." I lied through my teeth and he eyes me suspiciously.
"Headed out where?"
"To the club," I responded almost immediately and he eyed me up and down.
"Wearing that?"
I looked down at my outfit which was a pair of plain blue jeans and a button-down shirt.
Not even remotely sexy!
"You would be surprised by the amount of attention this would get," I smirked and he rubbed his jawline, looking down at his feet before speaking.
"You do know we could hang out, right?" he asked, trying to change my mind but I knew very well what he would rather be doing right now.
"Please, get back to your girlfriend, dude." I scoffed and walked down the hallway, not waiting for his reply. I was so pissed and I had no idea why. What the hell was Grace trying to do? She could have told me she was meeting him. What's with the fucking secrecy? I shook my head and headed out to get drunk for real and clear out my mind.
I definitely needed it.
"Well, be careful and come home soon." He called out after me, making me roll my eyes.
"You're not my mom," I yelled, disappearing around the hallway.
