Cassie
The werewolf immediately hides behind my legs, whimpering loudly. It catches 116’s attention.
“What the hell is that?” he asks. I can see his Adam’s apple bobs up and down as he swallows to satisfy his dry throat.
“I found her still alive in a cell,” I answer him.
116 shrugs and turn around to watch 78’s cold body. Nate is glaring at the little werewolf, causing her to flinch.
Brad is dead, I sign to him.
He lets out a sigh of defeat. What are we going to do now? The pack will mourn for their warrior’s death.
We have no choice but to deliver the body there so Brad’s family can pay their last respect.
Nate nods slowly, nodding towards the little werewolf in confusion. The little werewolf looks at the both of us, questioning silently about what we were talking about in sign language.
I’m planning for her to join the pack.
Nate nods. Anna appears by Nate’s side, hissing loudly at the werewolf. The little werewolf growls back at the tiger. Hazard lands on my shoulder, glaring hard at the werewolf.
116 mumbles a small prayer.
“116, do you need some time alone?” I ask him softly.
116 nods, unable to answer back.
I drag Nate by his arm out of the prison. The little werewolf keeps following, not bothering the tiger and eagle.
What is it’s name? Nate signs.
She doesn’t remember.
Nate glances at the werewolf without any emotion. “Shift,” he commands in his hunter voice.
The werewolf instantly does as he says and shifts into human. I hand her my cloak again to conceal her nudity.
“You got no name, eh, kid?” he says, stroking his chin.
I chuckle. What a coincidence, the both of us call her ‘kid’.
The girl trembles in fear, hugging my legs that remind me of Alice.
Nate watches her every move, scaring her.
Knock it off! I snap at him in sign language.
Nate bursts out laughing, making me grumble about how I ended up with him as a twin brother.
I smack the back of Nate’s head as he whines in pain. The girl giggles softly at our sibling interaction.
Stop scaring the poor girl, Nate! I sign.
He shrugs and gives the girl an eerie smile. Heck, his smile even scares me. “Do you know who I am, kid?”
The girl’s face turns dark as she answers, “The Deadly Twins.” She looks at me and then Nate a few times.
Nate seems like he can’t understand her since she speaks to quickly for him to read her lips.
The Deadly Twins, I repeat in sign language.
Nate looks as surprised as I was.
I’ll go and grab 116’s truck. You’ll move Brad’s and 78’s body out, alright?
He frowns at the little werewolf. What about her?
I frown too, not thinking of it. I’ll bring her along.
“Are you sure?” Nate asks out loud.
“Yes,” I reply.
Before Nate can put up a fight, I turn to the girl. “Follow me, kid.”
The werewolf obeys, following me. Hazard is still sitting on my shoulder, glancing at every rogue body we passed by. I have my gun, just in case the little werewolf changes her mind and attack me.
It is silent so I decide to break it. “Let’s get a name for you, kid.”
I turn a little to see her shrug. “I don’t know…”
“What about Cassandra? Cassie, for short?” I suggest, cutting her off.
Cassie brightens up. “I like that name. Cassie.”
I smile at her. “Well, Cassie. As I promise, I’ll get you into a pack. There is a pack in Meadow Falls not far away from here. I have forgotten the name of the pack but I’m sure they’ll take you in. I need you to promise me that you won’t mention of us hunters,” I tell her sternly.
It surprises me when she says, “No.”
I pause in my tracks, taken aback. “What?” I ask.
She looks at me. “I don’t want to go to a pack,” she says stubbornly.
I frown at her. “Cassie, you’re a werewolf. You should be in a pack. Where are you going to live, huh?”
“I’ll live with you!”
“Kid, didn’t you already know that I’m a hunter?”
Cassie shrugs. “I’m not going to a pack. They’ll think I’m a freak.”
I tuck a strand of her loose hair behind her ears. “No one would think you’re a freak,” I murmur.
Once again, she hugs my legs.
“Kid?” I ask.
“Please don’t make me go there! Please!” she pleads.
“You’re a werewolf. I’m a hunter. We’re supposed to be enemies,” I try to explain.
“I don’t care!”
Another problem in my hands. Great, just great.
“I’ll make you a deal,” I start, watching her face brightening up.
“Anything!” she yells in happiness.
I chuckle. “You have to do as I say. You have to go to school. You can’t tell anyone that we’re hunters. Deal?”
Cassie holds up her hand. “I also want to be just like you,” she says.
“A hunter? You? A werewolf who is a hunter? Did you hear what you’re saying?” I ask. I swear this kid is going to kill me one day.
“I know you’re good. You tried to free me. I want to be just like you,” she says, looking up at me in admiration.
“Alright. Whatever. My brother and I will train you. Happy, kid?”
She nods her head happily. The both of us continue walking towards 116’s house. Hazard flies to sit on a branch.
“Will I get a pet too?” Cassie asks absentmindedly.
I snort. “No. You’re a werewolf so you can use your senses. My brother and I are practically human so we need them.”
Cassie sticks out her tongue at me. We reach the house in no time. I grab 116’s keys to his truck and drive towards the abandoned prison. Cassie is sitting at the passenger seat, bouncing up and down in excitement.
“You still didn’t tell me your name,” Cassie reminds me when I take a sharp turn.
I debate in my head whether I should tell her or not.
“My name is Melanie,” I tell her.
She keeps asking me questions about hunters and werewolves, giving me the biggest headache in history.
This is going to be a bumpy ride.
