Chapter 8

A/N: idk what to say right now. Enjoy da chappy.

Calypso's POV
"You're sure you've got everything?"

Annabeth rolled her eyes. "Yes."

"Okay, okay. Ready?"

"No."

Calypso took Percy and Annabeth's hands in hers. Closing her eyes, she visualized Greece in her mind and snapped her fingers. In a flash, the trio was standing outside the remains of the Acropolis in Athens.

Calypso smirked slightly. Gaea had granted her the power to get anywhere she wanted. Talk about securing your own downfall.

Beside her, Percy drew a sharp breath. He and Annabeth were scanning their surroundings in horrified silence. Calypso couldn't blame them. A barren wasteland had taken the place of the rolling green hills and the bustle of the great city. In the distance, the Mediterranean was a raging turmoil of inky black water. The overcast sky only served to increase the oppressive feeling of destruction that hung in the misty air. Calypso shivered.

"It's... gone," Percy said blankly, and Calypso was alarmed to hear the same kind of hopeless despair in his tone that had been there before Annabeth burst out of the earth. But she completely understood how he was feeling.

"Here we are again." Annabeth's voice sounded shaky. She pointed at the old stone pillars towering above the unchanging expanse that had once been a flourishing agriculture. "I still don't get why Gaea didn't destroy this place as well. I mean, I get that it's her root, and all, but why leave the temple? And the throne?"

"Dunno." Percy shrugged. "The giants probably wanted to keep the throne. Well, I guess that's our next stop, huh?" He laughed nervously. Calypso could tell it was forced. All at once, she felt like grabbing Percy and taking him back to Ogygia. If he was going to do what she thought he was going to do, maybe it would be better to let Gaea have her fun.

"Well," Calypso said finally. "This is goodbye, then."

"Not goodbye." Annabeth glanced sidelong at Percy, her expression unreadable. "Good luck. We'll see you again soon. Remember what you have to do."

"Yeah." Calypso locked eyes with Percy. A silent conversation passed between them. It went something thing like this:

Calypso: l know what you're thinking.

Percy: Yep.

Calypso: Are you sure it's necessary?

Percy: Yep.

Calypso: Just make absolutely certain there are no alternatives before you do something rash.

Percy: Yep.

Calypso: Promise?

Percy: Yep.

Calypso: You're not listening to me. But I'm serious. I really hate your plan.

Percy: Me too.

Calypso dropped her gaze. "Well, good luck, then," she said.

"You too," Percy told her. "Thanks for all your help, Calypso. Really. Take care of yourself."

"Yeah," Annabeth added. "Don't get yourself killed. I want to do that."

In spite of herself, Calypso grinned. "Whatever, Chase." Giving Percy one last look, she closed her eyes and transported herself back to Ogygia.

Percy's POV
Percy took Annabeth's hand. "I guess we should go."

"Yeah."

The began to pick their way towards the Parthenon, stepping carefully, tense and alert. Everything stayed ominously silent.

"I don't like this," Annabeth whispered. "Where are the monsters? One would think there would at least be a few Titans." She gave a humourless laugh.

"Well, we haven't gotten swallowed up by the earth yet, so it's probably a trap," Percy agreed. "Gaea probably knows exactly what we're up to. She's just waiting for the right moment to crash the party."

"Probably."

They continued in silence for a few minutes. The ground began to get boggy, making it difficult to walk. The damp, humid air seemed to be sucking the strength from Percy's limbs. He shivered. It was like Tartarus all over again. Beside him, Annabeth was breathing heavily. Percy felt a twinge of worry.

"You okay, Wise Girl?" He said, squeezing her hand. "Maybe we should stop for a bit."

Easier said than done. As soon as Percy stopped moving, his shoes started sinking into the earth. Annabeth gave a little yelp of surprise and tried to yank her foot out, losing her shoe in the process. The earth immediately swallowed it up.

"Hey!" Annabeth protested.

Percy looked around wildly. A large, flat-topped boulder stood sentinel a few meters away.

"C'mon," Percy said, grabbing Annabeth's hand again. Together they fought their way over to the rock and collapsed onto it.

The hair on the back of Percy's neck prickled. He was getting the sensation of being watched. His hand drifted down to the pocket of his jeans, where Riptide was tucked away. Percy smiled at little. Gaea was gonna regret not confiscating the sword.

"Gaea," Annabeth declared once they had both caught their breath, "Is totally related to the Stolls. I mean, my shoe? Really?" She pulled off her muddy sock and flung at at the ground. It was instantly swallowed.

Percy shook his head in mock horror. "That cannot be good for the digestive system."

Annabeth laughed. She leaned in and kissed him.

Naturally, that was when everything started going downhill.

The columns of the Acropolis shook, and about three dozen giants materialized from the shadows.

"That is the trap," Percy decided, uncapping Riptide and getting to his feet.

Annabeth unsheathed the dagger that Calypso had provided and stood up beside him.

"Puny demigods," bellowed the giant king, Porphyrion. "You have walked right to your doom!"
